Following the Associated Press calling the presidential race for Democrat Joe Biden, statements of support from previous presidents calling for unity and congratulations were shared.President Barack Obama, who Biden served as Vice President between 2009-2017, started by saying how proud he was to congratulate Biden, his wife Jill, running mate Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff.“I know he’ll do the job with the best interests of every American at heart, whether or not he had their vote. So I encourage every American to give him a chance and lend him your support,” Obama’s statement reads. “The election results at every level show that the country remains deeply and bitterly divided. It will be up to not just Joe and Kamala, but each of us, to do our part - to reach out beyond our comfort zone, to listen to others, to lower the temperature and find some common ground from which to move forward, all of us remembering that we are one nation, under God.”Obama also thanked everyone who voted and got involved this election cycle, and urged all Americans to stay engaged in civic issues.President Bill Clinton tweeted his support, saying “America has spoken and democracy has won.” He also touched on healing a divided nation, saying “Now we have a President-Elect and Vice President-Elect who will serve all of us and bring us all together.”President Jimmy Carter said he and his wife Rosalynn are “proud” of the Democrats’ “well-run campaign and seeing the positive change they bring to our nation.” Carter served one term as president, from 1977-1981, while Biden was a young senator from Delaware. FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A medical examiner's report shows a 17-year-old girl who died of COVID-19 may have contracted the coronavirus at a church party in Florida. In the report, it says the party Carsyn Davis attended on June 10 had about 100 people there. It said none of them were wearing masks, and only three days later, the Fort Myers teen started showing symptoms. The church is defending itself against criticism on social media, saying on Facebook that it did not ignore protocols or intentionally expose children to the virus, and that media reports suggesting these things are “absolutely false and defamatory.”However, a gathering of that size and the lack of masks is against both Florida Department of Health and CDC guidelines. The report also shows that after Davis started experiencing symptoms, her parents didn’t immediately take her to the hospital. They instead treated her with two prescription medications, one of which was hydroxychloroquine.“I read a few of the recent studies on hydroxychloroquine, and some of the reports, and it has shown some promise, but that’s all. It’s not that it’s totally effective," said Dr. Jay Gupta at Florida Gulf Coast University. Gupta said it’s not a drug you should ever try without talking with a doctor. The medical examiner report shows that on June 19, Davis had her oxygen levels drop when her mother measured them. Gupta said that’s a big warning sign.“If they’re having breathing trouble, then they should certainly go to a doctor," said Gupta. But Davis didn’t see a doctor.Instead, the report said her mother, a nurse, put her on an oxygen tank they had in the house for her grandfather. When that didn’t work, she was taken to the hospital on June 20. Davis died only two days after being hospitalized, according to the report. It also shows that, when in the hospital, her parents decided not to have her put on a ventilator. This story was originally published by Rob Manch at WFTX. 1955
Former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden were reunited Monday, when they went out for lunch at a Washington, DC, bakery.Obama and Biden spent about 45 minutes at Dog Tag Bakery in Georgetown. The bakery runs a fellowship program, now in its eighth class, that acts as a "living business school" for veterans, military spouses and military caregivers, Dog Tag CEO Meghan Ogilvie told COVER/LINE. Professors from Georgetown University teach fellows, who can earn a certificate of business administration from Georgetown University's School of Continuing Studies.Ogilvie said she found out about six minutes before Obama and Biden arrived that they were coming. She gathered the current 13 fellows and said they would have a team meeting and surprised them when the 44th President of the United States and his Veep walked in.Obama and Biden met the fellows, took selfies with them and talked to them about their future business plans for about 20 to 30 minutes. They also grabbed a bite to eat.If it wasn't for the fact they were once leaders of the free world, "it would seem like two friends coming together to have lunch," Ogilvie said. They ordered ham and gruyère sandwiches. Obama got a side salad, and Biden got a slice of mint basil blueberry cake.Obama told Ogilvie he was aware of "the good work you've been doing" at the bakery, she said. Before long, photos of Obama and Biden at the bakery began circulating online, drawing a crowd. But, "they didn't tell us to stop having people come in," she said.Obama's been known to meet with possible 2020 contenders, including his former Vice President. A Democratic source told CNN in June that Obama had met with Democrats including Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and former Attorney General Eric Holder to give advice. But unlike Monday's lunch, those meetings were held in private, at his West End office.Ogilvie described Obama and Biden as "so human" and "so kind.""They shook everyone's hand," she said, and as they left, they talked with the fellows about the business ideas they had shared. "They learned about them." 2215
