CARLSBAD, Calif. (CNS) - The city of Carlsbad announced Thursday it was temporarily suspending its collection fees for sidewalk cafes, outdoor displays and curbside cafe permits to help businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.This suspension of permit fees also means reimbursement of around ,000 to businesses that paid for these types of permits since March 1 of this year. Fee reimbursement and the revenue offset from the suspension of fee collection will be funded from the Economic Recovery and Revitalization Initiative funds. Of those funds, 5,000 remains for contingency or future city council actions.When the pandemic's public health orders required the closure of indoor operations, Carlsbad relaxed development standards to allow businesses to use these permits to quickly activate outdoor spaces on public sidewalks. Some businesses were also granted no-cost permits allowing them to use private property such as their parking lots, to add to their existing outdoor areas.On July 28, the City Council also relaxed standards for curbside cafes, allowing restaurants to use up to four street parking stalls to expand outdoor dining.The permits normally cost a one-time payment of 1 and ,200 per parking stall per year. These fees are now temporarily suspended until February 28, 2021, or for the duration of the local COVID-19 pandemic emergency, whichever is later.More than 70 businesses have been permitted, including restaurants, fitness classes, hair and nail salons, spas and churches, allowing them to temporarily move their operations outdoors onto private property, public sidewalks and on-street public parking spaces so that they can comply with public health guidelines.According to a statement from the city, even with the county now allowing indoor dining, retail shopping or fitness classes, capacity has been reduced by 50% to 90%, depending on the type of business. (KGTV) - A La Jolla man bought Carlsbad Fire Station 3 from the city and is making renovation plans so he can move in.Carlsbad firefighters worked out of the fire house on Catalina Drive for 40 years before moving to a newer, bigger station down the street in 2016."We kinda miss them because it was nice having them here, but I do think it's great that he's moving in," neighbor Diane Nogle said.Neighbors said the firefighters were a huge part of their cul-de-sac. Charles Colletti, the new owner, said they brought a cake to a neighboring girl's home on her birthday.Colletti said he bought the house for 3,000 to move closer to his daughter and grandchildren. Wednesday he walked through the home with a contractor, designing the future, "it needs a lot of work, the outside looks like a Brady Bunch house."Some of those proposed changes: new floors, new appliances, extending the kitchen, demolishing the fire chief's room downstairs, and moving the awkward bathroom in the middle of the floor plan.Colletti insisted he didn't want to take the fire station out of the house."I would love to keep some fire department, fire engine, stuff, memorabilia," Colletti said. "I was actually searching for a classic fire truck that I could potentially restore that I could keep here."Another selling point for him and a place that won't see much change is the garage.Colletti is planning on storing his classic car collection inside. Fourteen in all, including BMWs, Porsches, and Volkswagens.The only thing Colletti noticed that was missin: a fire pole. "We're considering installing one, just so when everybody asks me the question I can say yes, it does." Colletti said that's been one of his most asked questions. Colletti said he wants the station to continue serving the community, whether that's rescued pet adoptions with Second Chance, or bringing the firefighters back to the neighborhood."I'd love to reach out to them and invite them over to block parties because they're not that far away."Colletti will be moving in on July 15. It wasn’t news.”Both women point to education and more listening as the core path to resolution and coexistence.“We haven't been serious for a long time about educating our citizens,” Bevel said. “And I don't just mean Black and brown people in the inner cities. CALEXICO (CNS) - The federal government today broke ground on the first border wall replacement project awarded under President Donald Trump.Customs and Border Protection is replacing a 2.25-mile section of border fencing constructed in the 1990s using scrap metal with a 30-foot-high bollard-style wall just south of downtown Calexico. The project covers an area west of the Calexico West Port of Entry, according to the agency.This project ``is one of Border Patrol's highest priority projects,'' according to a CBP statement ``Although the existing wall has proven effective at deterring unlawful cross-border activity, smuggling organizations damaged and breached this outdated version of a border wall several hundred times during the last two years, resulting in costly repairs.'' 794
