An unauthorized vehicle drove onto Travis Air Force Base in Northern California, crashed and erupted into flames, killing the driver, authorities said.There were no other fatalities in the security breach Wednesday night, the base said in a statement. It did not identify the driver, but said the car "gained unauthorized access" through the main gate."Travis AFB security forces immediately responded," the statement said. "Additionally, the base's explosive ordnance disposal team, office of special investigations and other responders were on scene."It's unclear whether the crash was deliberate. The Air Force and the FBI are investigating."The investigation is ongoing and there are no current known threats to the base or community," the base said. " The main gate has reopened and all other facilities are operating as normal."Travis Air Force Base is home to 10,000 military personnel, and a major hub for logistics and military cargo in the Pacific. It's the largest military aerial port in the US, and includes facilities for airlift and aerial refueling.The base is located in Solano County and is midway between Sacramento and San Francisco."The safety and welfare of our airmen, their families and our local community is our top priority," said Col. (AP) — A fifth horse has died at Santa Anita this fall, the 35th overall fatality since Dec. 26 at the Southern California racetrack.G Q Covergirl injured both her front legs Friday on the training track. The 5-year-old mare was euthanized on the advice of the attending veterinarian.Trained by two-time Kentucky Derby winner Doug O'Neill, G Q Covergirl had six wins in 16 career starts and earnings of 0,730. She had won her last two starts and finished in the money in all of her six races this year. O'Neill also owned the mare in a partnership.The training track has caused the fewest number of breakdowns. However, there have been three deaths on it since the fall meet began on Sept. 27, including one that was believed to be a heart attack. As disinfecting wipes and sprays fly off store shelves, companies are looking for new ways to keep surfaces coronavirus-free. Some are looking at repurposing UV light technology, a cleaning solution that’s been used for decades.Ava Robotics and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology partnered on a project to create a robot that uses UV-C light to disinfect large areas.“It was about a 4,000 square foot space. It was able to disinfect that in less than 30 minutes,” said Youssef Saleh with Ava Robotics.The purpose -- cleaning large, busy spaces of virus and bacteria, specifically coronavirus.“UV is not new. Robots are not new themselves,” Saleh said.“It's actually been in practice in hospitals for probably four decades plus,” said Dr. Eric Hill, the Chair of Emergency Services at Medical Center of Aurora. It’s usually used to sterilize rooms.“Anything that the light hits, it can kill. So it has to be in direct contact with the light beam and it has to be in contact for a certain period of time,” Hill said.“There are three factors of effectiveness of UV light, the first is the power itself,” Saleh explained. “Then there's the distance to the object that you're trying to disinfect, and then there is the amount of time.”"We cannot see it, it's the same kind of UV radiation you’d get from the sun,” Hill said. “It works by destroying the DNA and the RNA of the organism. And it doesn't affect just viruses, it affects bacteria, viruses, mold, and spores.”While it can kill germs, it can also do damage to us. UV light plays a role in diseases like skin cancer. “It is dangerous for humans to be in direct contact with it,” Dr. Hill said.That’s why the project with Ava Robotics and MIT also factors in safety for humans.“Safety elements have to be part of the solution, thought through, and understood,” Saleh said. The team is working on making the robot more adaptable to changing spaces, like warehouses, and potentially other large spaces like grocery stores and schoolsBut Hill says UV light isn’t a complete replacement for traditional cleaning methods.“It does not take the place of things like wiping something down,” he said. “But after you do that...adding in a UV light system can really hit in a broad area...and get all the microorganisms that were in there.”Hill also warns consumers that are interested in this to look at products closely.“Several hundred dollars is realistic for a good UV light system,” he explained. “We have seen much more of a demand of it, if you go on Amazon the amount of UV light products I’ve seen pushed out is incredible.” 2591

An employee at an Arizona pizza restaurant may lose his eye after being attacked by a woman with a stiletto. Scottsdale Police report that on Fbe. 19 they were called to Gus' Pizza.Witnesses reportedly told police that 32-year-old Kris May Loring fell out of her chair and onto the floor. She left the restaurant thinking other customers were laughing at her. Police say a few minutes later her boyfriend entered the business, yelled at the customers and allegedly threw pizza at them. While Aaron Walter, a security guard for Gus' Pizza Lounge, attempted to detain the man, police say Loring, "took off her stilettos and charged at the victim." She delivered, "deliberate and violent blows towards the victim's head." “I was kind of holding the back of her boyfriend’s neck, just kind of holding him down while he’s blowing off some steam, and next thing you know, I was hit in the eye,” said Walter. Police say one of the stilettos struck Walter in the eye causing a severe laceration. Walter was hospitalized for several days, and his vision has returned since the attack. “I'm glad it was a stiletto.. I'm glad it wasn’t a knife or a gun,” said Walter. Upon her arrest, Loring allegedly threatened to "bite the nose off the arresting officer." She is facing multiple charges including aggravated assault.Despite what happened, Walter says he holds no ill will towards Loring.“I want her to have a wonderful life, I want her kids to prosper, I want her husband to prosper, and I want everyone to just live."  1579
