SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This week the Honor Flight family is saying goodbye to beloved family member Arthur Smith, a World War II Veteran and the inspiration behind San Diego's Honor Flight chapter.Back in 2009, Arthur and his son Dave went to Washington D.C. with the Honor Flight Network. Shortly after, Dave created a hub in San Diego to give Southern California veterans the same experience. “They came back three months, six months, even 10 months after war ended, to no fanfare whatsoever and went on with their lives, so this is our way of honoring them for their service," said Dave.RELATED: Honor Flight San Diego: Military veterans take off for 'Tour of Honor'PHOTOS: Vets go on "Tour of Honor"VIDEO: 10News joins Honor Flight San Diego for incredible tripDespite being exempt from the WWII draft because of his work making propellers for the war effort, Arthur was determined to fight for his country. He served with the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1948. During WWII Arthur was assigned to the First Provisional Marine Brigade and was part of the U.S. invasion to take back the Island of Guam.“His service and the way he served, the selflessness, the individuals back in WWII and Korea and Vietnam, their country called and they were selfless about what they were going to do," said Dave. Dave says the community can honor his father by coming to the Honor Flight San Diego homecoming in May or by donating to the organization. It costs the organization roughly 0,000 to send veterans to Washington D.C. for the weekend. 1548

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District, one of the state's largest districts, begins the new school year online Monday.Even though California has given both private and public schools in San Diego County the green light to reopen schools on Tuesday, Sept. 1, SD Unified officials say for now they will stick with distance learning. The district's online instruction plan includes:A six-hour school day with customized learning experiences for each K-12 studentAll students will have daily, live interaction with their teachers via video conferencingCustom learning experiences will be based on student needs and will include daily live, online instruction (up to three hours), independent learning (at least two hours), working with other students in small groups or participating in educator office hours (at least one hour)All Elementary students will receive instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, and the artsStudents will receive grades to measure their progressSome children who have faced learning challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic may be offered appointments for in-person sessions, which could begin as soon as late September, according to the district."The teacher will of course try various interventions teaching strategies online, but if the teacher comes to the conclusion that this student would benefit from in-person interventions, then the teacher will reach out to the family," said San Diego Education Association President Kisha Borden.Students will be identified by their teachers for participation based on several factors: Students who had below standard marks on their spring 2020 report cards, special education students who did not meet IEP goals, and special education students with intense support needs. The district says this option will not be offered immediately and will take teachers a few weeks to make these assessments. 1940

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Trump campaign is asking for a recount in Wisconsin and there could be other recounts before this election is over. But recounts rarely flip the result of an election. From 2009 to 2019, there were 5,778 statewide general elections, according to the non-partisan group FairVote. In that span there were 31 completed recounts.Only three of the 31 recounts flipped the outcome of the race, FairVote found. Those recounts were a Washington governor’s race in 2004, an auditor’s race in Vermont in 2006, and a 2008 race in Minnesota that made Al Franken a U.S. Senator.Deb Otis, a senior research analyst with FairVote, said in all three of these cases, the original margin heading into the recount was razor thin: less than .05 percent.“We generally see a shift in votes during recounts on the order of a few hundred votes or maybe 1000 votes,” said Otis. “The margin in Wisconsin right now is around 20,000 votes. We have not seen a statewide recount shift votes anywhere near 20,000.”The most memorable recount was in Florida in 2000, in the race between George W. Bush and Al Gore. That recount shifted the margin by 1,247 votes. It was a significant shift in a race decided by just 537 votes, but it was still not enough to flip the outcome. The record for a shift is 2,567 votes, which happened in Florida’s 2018 senate race won by Rick Scott, but it was also not enough to flip the outcome. 1423

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Unified School District reached out to the parents of students Friday to let them know what’s being done to protect their children amid a series of non-credible school threats.12 schools in San Diego County investigated threats or heightened security this week: Ramona High School, San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, Steam Academy in Spring Valley, San Diego High School, Creative, Performing and Media Arts Middle School, Madison High School, Vista High School, Innovative Middle School, High Tech High Media Arts, San Marcos High School, and Torrey Pines High School.San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten wrote a letter indicating the district’s safety methods, which include: 763

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There has been a recent spike in the number of school threats in San Diego County, with five this week alone.Three of those have resulted in arrests at Poway High, Fallbrook High, and El Capitan High. Law enforcement is investigating other threats at Scripps Ranch High and Steele Canyon High."We do see where it comes to school threats that they come in packs," District Attorney Summer Stephan told 10News during an interview Thursday afternoon at the Hall of Justice. She believes that because many of the threats are born out of attention-getting behavior, they may be copycat scenarios, explaining why they may occur in waves.RELATED: 665
