SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two people escaped uninjured after a sailboat crashed into an Ocean Beach jetty, before the vessel itself was crushed by high surf.The 25-foot long boat collided into the North Channel jetty in Ocean Beach with the two individuals on board, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokeswoman Monica Mu?oz. San Diego Lifeguards used a personal water craft to reach the vessel and safely pull the two individuals after they were forced to jump from the boat. The boat was attempting to leave the jetty area when a large wave forced them to pull a U-turn. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two people were injured after a fire broke out on a boat in Mission Bay, engulfing the vessel, Thursday.San Diego Fire-Rescue responded to the fire on the 30-foot vessel off Ingraham St. just after 3 p.m.Two people were burned by flames and jumped from the boat. They were transported to UCSD Medical Center, though the extent of their injuries is unknown.Witnesses said they initially saw smoke but thought the fire would be extinguished. Within five minutes, witnesses say the flames grew higher and panic set in."It started catching on fire, people started jumping off into the water," said Jorge Segura, who captured video showing a SDFD boat dosing the flames early on. 701

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Too many young military families in San Diego are finding themselves trapped in mountains of debt, not knowing where to turn.It's a devastating problem that the nonprofit Support the Enlisted Project (STEP) is working to tackle."It's a real challenge, and I think we are setting these families up for failure a lot of the times," said Tony Teravainen, CEO and Co-founder of STEP. STEP helps prevent roughly seven evictions each month for young military families. "As a country, we don't have great financial habits. And what we see is when families enter the military we put additional burdens on them, and a lot of times this pulls them further, further into debt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With San Diego County schools doing distance learning this fall, many parents worry their kids will miss out on important social interactions with peers.In fact, it was the number one concern cited by parents in a series of national surveys conducted earlier in the pandemic.Research on past pandemics shows quarantines can have a lasting impact on both children and adults.The American Psychological Association says “having limited access to peers and classmates can affect children’s emotional well-being, which can in turn affect their educational performance, learning and development.”“As humans, we all need that social interaction,” said UC San Diego associate professor Alison Wishard Guera. “What is does for your development I think is really different across the age ranges.”Wishard Guera said kids roughly 8 years and younger need to learn how to interact with others.“The opportunity to have conflicts. To learn how to resolve conflicts. To learn how to share materials. To learn how to coordinate their body in a classroom space with other people. They're going to be missing out on that,” she said.When children reach adolescence, around 10 or 11 years old, they start to lean on their friends for their identity, she said. With kids feeling more isolated from friends, “we’ve seen a big spike in depression and mental health challenges,” she said.In its push to reopen schools, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cited research on past pandemics that found kids who were quarantined had post-traumatic stress scores that were four times higher than those who were not quarantined.And there’s some research suggesting the effects can linger. After the SARS outbreak of 2003, quarantines were associated with higher rates of PTSD and alcohol abuse in adults, even three years after the individuals were quarantined.Experts say you should be on the lookout for signs your child is struggling with emotions they can’t express: increased anger, irritability, withdrawal, clinginess or changes in sleep and appetite.Dr. James Rivet, an educational consultant with San Diego Kids First, said one of the best ways to help your child cope is to establish a predictable routine.“We're going to start waking up at a certain time, and we're going to start getting ready at a certain time and we've got to start eating right,” he said. “Students thrive on routine and structure.”Part of that routine should include a schedule with fun things for kids to look forward to, like a game night.Experts say you should set aside time regularly for kids to connect with family members and friends by video, phone or handwritten letters.And make sure to spend time outside, to ensure children get regular exercise. 2748

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two men convicted of leading a home-invasion robbery spree with five other people were sentenced to prison terms Friday.A judge sentenced 26-year-old Thomas James Smith to 85 years plus 50 years to life in prison and 22-year-old Aaron Rico III to 35 years plus 25 years to life in prison for their roles the series of violent break-ins.Smith and Rico were convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary, robbery, burglary and sexual assault in June. The violent crime spree began on January 23. The series of crimes included breaking into homes, tying up and assaulting homeowners, and in one case, sexually assaulting a woman. RELATED: 680
