SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - You probably don't know Encinitas resident Carol Areas, but you may have seen her words of encouragement scattered thorough San Diego. Ten years ago, she and her son began writing positive messages on rocks and leaving them around the city. Now they receive messages of people making their own rocks around the world.When Areas learned her son had Asperger's, she was compelled to start a new project, the Love it Forward List. "I felt the need to connect with people, to receive love, to know people are caring," said Areas. Whenever she hears someone is going through a hard time, she rally's volunteers to send them some love. "Five years now writing snail mails! I love that!" said Areas.So when she learned about 5-year-old Noah Avery and his 7-year-old sister Kalea, she called on her army of comfort warriors. "The moment I heard about this story, I thought we had to do a campaign for them," said Areas.In June of 2018, Kalea was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor. "Thirteen days after we were told our daughter had a brain tumor, we were told our son Noah had a brain tumor," recalls their mother, Nohea Avery. There are only a handful of cases known of siblings being diagnosed with this cancer, doctors say. And Nohea says her doctors don't know any cases of siblings being diagnosed at the same time. "To have two, you kind of just, you go into survival mode. I always tell people well, we don't have a choice. You wake up every day, and you show up for them every day, and you kind of just, one foot in front of another," said Nohea. This summer, both kids were in remission, but then doctors found a small tumor in Noah's brain. They're traveling to Rady Children's Hospital each week from Los Angeles for proton radiation. But Nohea says throughout every challenge, complete strangers like Areas have shown up along the way. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — TwitchCon guests in San Diego for a weekend of gaming won't be celebrating the three-day convention with at least one headliner.Rapper Lil Nas X suddenly dropped out of TwitchCon's annual convention party set for Saturday night at Petco Park. The musician announced on Twitter he was canceling his performance to take some time off."It’s been a wild last 7 months and im ready to take a little time off. sorry to everyone attending twitchcon or the sandbox music festival, i will not be there. i love u guys and will make it up to you some way," the 20-year-old rapper tweeted.RELATED: Gaming, video streaming unite as TwitchCon returns to San DiegoLil Nas X was scheduled to perform alongside Blink-182, Au/Ra, Y2k, and Madeon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - US Coast Guard officers will be out in full force over the holiday weekend. They've launched Operation Dry Water to help cut down on the number of arrests for people boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol."We want everybody to have a great time and do it in a safe manner," says Lt. Commander Ellen Motoi, the Chief of Enforcement for the San Diego Sector of the Coast Guard."We're going to have a lot more boats out there from the local side, as well as Harbor Police. They'll be promoting safety and looking for boaters under the influence," says Motoi.Alcohol is the leading cause of boating accidents, according to the Coast Guard. They look for erratic speed, dangerous course headings and boats coming too close to other vessels as warning signs that someone may be drunk while operating a boat.Operation Dry Water is a nationwide program. In 2018, they made 494 BUI arrests and issued 7,305 other citations.Like driving, the legal limit for alcohol while operating a boat is .08. Anyone arrested for BUI could face jail time, a loss of their license/credentials and a hefty fine.Aside from BUI, Motoi says the emphasis of Operation Dry Water focuses on safety."It's not worth it," says Motoi. "We encourage everyone to think twice before you get on a boat."Motoi says the most common mistake people make is not to wear a life jacket. The Coast Guard says 80% of all drownings happen because people aren't wearing one.The Coast Guard also wants boaters to know they shouldn't shoot off flares or fireworks from their boats. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A border church and border mosque are calling for a day of unity. A Bi-National Day of Prayer will be held at Friendship Park; a place where families on both sides of the U.S. Mexico border can meet. The group is also releasing a short film to encourage federal leaders to keep Friendship Park open. The film is called “A Prayer Beyond Borders.”“Friendship Park is the only place on the U.S. Mexico border, where families who have been separated by U.S. immigration policy, can come together,” says Dustin Craun with CAIR San Diego. Families “can physically be together.”Worshippers have been holding prayers there every week since 2011. “We can pray together when we can come together. We can break bread together,” says Imam Taha Hassane, with the Islamic Center of San Diego. Worshippers say there have been threats to close Friendship Park, but no action was ever taken. They are hoping their continued presence will show federal leaders they need this space open. “Millions of families in the United States and Mexico have no access to each other at all,” says Craun. “Closing friendship park would close any possibility of them being able to see each other.”First United Methodist Church and the Islamic Center of San Diego are calling for a day of unity for people of all faiths, for the Bi-National Day of Prayer.
