SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld’s rescue team is in full swing, rescuing more than 150 animals and birds so far this year. More than 80 marine mammals and over 75 birds have so far been rescued in 2019, with the goal of rehabilitating and returning them to their homes, SeaWorld says. On April 2, the team rescued a 10-month-old sea lion pup with a two-inch cut on its flipper from a coastal rock in Ocean Beach. After being treated, the team hopes to return him to the wild in six to eight weeks. Wednesday, the team also returned 13 rehabilitated sea lions to the ocean. The conference held at Qualcomm brings in hundreds of engineers, researchers, scientists and every woman in between. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University students can earn extra credit in a sociology class if they take a quiz calculating their "white privilege."Professor Dae Elliott is the purveyor of the 20-question quiz that urges students to evaluate situations and determine if their skin color has benefitted them in some way.Featuring scenarios like: “I can be late to a meeting without having the lateness reflect on my race,” and, “I can choose blemish or bandages in flesh color and have them more or less match my skin,” the quiz ranks a person’s privilege by tallying up the points they get for each question.In short, the higher one’s score, the higher their privilege.“I basically made it clear there’s a variety of privileges,” said Elliott, “we all have certain privileges.”Students of all ethnicities can take the quiz and can earn the same extra credit regardless of their white privilege score, according to Elliott.SDSU College Republicans president Brandon Jones says the quiz is racially divisive and his friends in Elliott’s class feel like they are being singled out.“I think what she was trying to do is racially bring people together,” said Jones, “but instead she’s excluding a whole group of people on campus.”Elliott says the evaluation is not about color, but a way in which everyone can understand each other better.“We need to listen to each other,” said Elliott, “give each other the same respect we give our own subjectivity.”Click here to see the quiz 10News obtained from a student in the class. 1557

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Unified School District is moving forward with plans to build a new elementary school in the Civita neighborhood of Mission Valley.In May, the District approved a plan to purchase land from Civita developer Sudberry Properties. Now, SDUSD has plans ready for a 2-story, 24 classroom campus, full of modern amenities. It will be able to hold 5-600 students."With new development in the area, we expect new families to come in. Those families are going to need an elementary school to attend," says District Facilities Communications Supervisor Samer Naji."Right now if you live in Mission Valley and have a young kid, you gotta drive out of Mission Valley to get them to school and get them from school. So a local school for those families is absolutely necessary," Naji adds.Sudberry has plans to build 5,000 new homes in the neighborhood. That, combined with other development on the north side of Mission Valley, is expected to bring a population boom. The District says they're trying to be ahead of the curve when it comes to having a school ready to serve the area.The new school will be on the corner of Civita Boulevard and Via Alta, just west of the new Civita Park. Right now, the land is occupied by a small grassy area and a dog park."The idea was to locate the school in a central location for the community that was really kind of civic heart or the social hub of the community," says Sudberry VP Marco Sessa. "We tried to create an environment here where really you can live, play, and work. A school is a big component of that."People who live in Civita say they're excited about the news, but also want to make sure it lives up to high academic standards."It's all about the level of education," says Russell Pontone. "It's one thing to build a beautiful building. But are you going to have the best teachers there? What kind of programs and resources are actually going to be available?"The District has not said how much it will cost to build the new school. Money from Proposition Z and local development impact fees will pay for the construction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several business sectors will be cleared to reopen indoor activities with modifications next week in San Diego County under the state's new guidance, according to local health officials.Under California's new blueprint for reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic, starting Monday, Aug. 31, San Diego County can reopen indoor operations at the following businesses with modifications:Restaurants for dine-in, places of worship, museums, and movie theaters at a maximum of 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is less;Gyms, yoga studios, and fitness centers at a maximum of 10% capacity;Hair salons, barbershops, nail salons, and body waxing studios;Libraries and bookstores at a maximum of 50% capacity;Shopping malls at a maximum of 50% capacity, with closed common areas, and reduced food court capacity;Aquariums and zoos at a maximum of 25% capacityBusinesses that have been reopened under their safe reopening plans may have to be modified to meet the state's new percentages on capacity, according to Gary Johnston, the county's Chief Resiliency Officer on Reopening."The safe reopening plans, you need to modify those and express on those plans how you're going to adhere to the requirements that came out with the state," Johnston said.California's new rules for reopening are based on a four-tier, color-coded system that counties will move through based on their number of cases (case rate) and the percentage of positive tests. The system replaces the state's monitoring list.Based on the state’s new tool, San Diego County is in the red "Substantial" tier. The red tier covers counties with a case rate of four to seven daily new cases per 100,000 people and 5% to 8% positive tests. Theme parks are also not permitted to reopen.Wooten cautioned that the success of reopening any indoor operations this time around depends on compliance with the guidance and locals being safe."This time what we hope will happen, but it relies on people's behavior, is that as we are opening up 25% or 50% of capacity, not full 100%," Wooten said. "As we see issues people should also be clear that we will shut down entities if they are not following the guidelines and if there are particularly outbreaks occurring as a result of not following those non-pharmaceutical strategies."In order for San Diego County to move up a tier, it must stay in tier two for at least three weeks. Then to move up, it must meet the next tier's criteria for two consecutive weeks.
