WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Homeland Security has asked the military to provide more help securing the U.S.-Mexico border, two defense officials said Friday amid a political standoff over President Donald Trump's demand for more money to build a border wall.The acting secretary of defense, Pat Shanahan, has not decided how to respond to the DHS request, but in the past the Pentagon has provided help when asked. That would be in addition to 70 miles of concertina wire that combat engineers put up last fall. If the new work is taken on by the military, it might require an extension of the current deployment beyond its scheduled end Jan. 31. The official said DHS did not specifically ask for an extension, but it has not been ruled out.The troops have been erecting and reinforcing border barriers but are not performing law enforcement tasks or engaging with migrants. Some also have been providing transportation and logistical help as well as medical assistance to troops and to Customs and Border Protection personnel along the border.Many in Congress, including leading Democrats, have criticized the troop deployments as a waste of money and a misuse of military resources.Separately, there are about 2,200 National Guard troops deployed along the border. WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department is now requiring nearly all applicants for U.S. visas to submit their social media usernames, previous email addresses and phone numbers. It's a vast expansion of the Trump administration's enhanced screening of potential immigrants and visitors.In a move that's just taken effect after approval of the revised application forms, the department says it has updated its immigrant and nonimmigrant visa forms to request the additional information, including "social media identifiers," from almost all U.S. applicants.The change, which was proposed in March 2018, is expected to affect about 15 million foreigners who apply for visas to enter the United States each year."National security is our top priority when adjudicating visa applications, and every prospective traveler and immigrant to the United States undergoes extensive security screening," the department said. "We are constantly working to find mechanisms to improve our screening processes to protect U.S. citizens, while supporting legitimate travel to the United States."Social media, email and phone number histories had only been sought in the past from applicants who were identified for extra scrutiny, such as people who'd traveled to areas controlled by terrorist organizations. An estimated 65,000 applicants per year had fallen into that category.The department says collecting the additional information from more applicants "will strengthen our process for vetting these applicants and confirming their identity."The new rules apply to virtually all applicants for immigrant and nonimmigrant visas. When it filed its initial notice to make the change, the department estimated it would affect 710,000 immigrant visa applicants and 14 million nonimmigrant visa applicants, including those who want to come to the U.S. for business or education.The new visa application forms list a number of social media platforms and require the applicant to provide any account names they may have had on them over the previous five years. We're about a month into the school year and teachers are struggling to keep children up to speed amid the pandemic.We spoke with a principal at an elementary school in Arizona who says students are about five to six months behind. Some kids who should be reading by now, simply are not.She says when you think about it, most students have not been inside a classroom since March.One challenge for teachers has been teaching at-home students and giving one-on-one attention to those in the classroom. The other challenge has been technology.“It’s day to day, whether or not technology works,” said principal Sarah Lewis. “And if you think about it, we've been hybrid for about three weeks now, but before that, we were all digital learning. We would have full days where we wouldn't have any technology, so basically we would have to tell the kids, go into Google Classroom and practice your multiplication facts.”Lewis says it's tough to hear young kids are learning on their parents’ cell phones, because they don't have a computer.However, she says she's proud of how fast teachers became tech savvy, as well as the level of understanding from most parents and their willingness to be flexible. She's also proud of the kids.“Five-year-olds do not understand that you cannot go over to your friend’s desk and ask what they're reading or coloring, but as far as wearing the mask and being OK when we ask them to step away or ask them to, I mean it's incredible that little kids are able to do it,” said Lewis.Lewis says she wants people to know just how difficult it is for teachers to balance teaching online students and those in the classroom.
