SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A program in San Diego is making it easier for military families and veterans to get the help they need to fight food insecurity.Courage 2 Call offers food giveaways twice a month to anyone with a military ID or any veteran."We don’t have any criteria for them to go through the line," says program coordinator Angela Nagel. "They just have had to serve. We don’t look at status. We don’t look at discharge status. We don’t look at income. If you have a VA card, if you have a military id, come to courage to call we will get you set up with the resources in San Diego."The program focuses on giving out fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other pantry staples. Nagel says, at any given event, they'll serve up to 200 people."It breaks my heart to know that these military families have to go through our lines to get food," says Nagel. "I know for active duty it is a struggle to live in San Diego because of how expensive it is here. For active duty, they should not have to be going through these lines, but they do."Food insecurity has been called a "hidden epidemic" in the military. The San Diego Hunger Coalition says that 1 in 10 people who go to food banks have a military member in their family. The Coalition says low wages for enlisted members make it difficult to keep food on the table.Courage 2 Call is one of several military-focused programs that receive food from Feeding San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A California Assemblymember Thursday requested a state audit to review how that City and County of San Diego responded to a recent hepatitis A outbreak.In a letter to the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, Assemblymember Todd Gloria asks that the committee “determine whether both the County and City identified, contained, and treated the recent Hepatitis A virus (HAV) outbreak in accordance with statutory requirements and recommended procedures.”“We owe it to the 20 people who died and the more than 500 who contracted Hepatitis A to learn exactly what went wrong and what could have been done better,” said Assemblymember Todd Gloria. “It is my hope this audit will help us better understand how the City and County managed the Hepatitis A outbreak and ultimately make certain our region is sufficiently prepared to handle any future public health crisis that may arise.”According to the letter, the hepatitis A outbreak started in March of 2017. In September of 2017, county health officials declared a public health emergency.The county ended the public health emergency declaration in January of 2018.Assemblymember Gloria’s request for an audit will be heard by the committee on May 16.A spokesperson for San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer responded with the following statement on the request for an audit: 1346

SAN DIEO (KGTV) - Parole agents checked on child sex offenders Thursday night to ensure they were in compliance, as part of the 26th Annual Operation Boo.10News rode along with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Agents who went knocking on 7 doors Halloween night."The gates were closed, the lights were turned off, they kind of know what is expected of them," Parole Agent Matthew Holmes said.Some of the stops took us to National City, City Heights, even a marina where a house boat was docked."Most of the time they're compliant, occasionally somebody has to go back to jail, but we just try to hold them accountable for their conditions," Holmes said.That means no alcohol, drugs, weapons, or pornography.Thursday night everyone checked out.One parolee told 10News he's excited to take the next step after his release, "I feel fantastic, the program is great, State Parole is great. It's definitely worth it. I think all this tax payers expense, they're getting their money's worth, I'll tell you that."Operation Boo is just a small part of agents' role of checking in on parolees. Wednesday five parolees were arrested for being out of compliance. 1181

San Diego (KGTV)- The San Diego Police Department will soon be adding 63 new officers on our streets. The department held the orientation for its 120th police academy this morning. This academy class is the largest class in over 25 years.“It’s very exciting,” says recruit Samantha Koegel. “I’m really excited to start this new journey of my life.”Koegel says her interest in the police force started began as a senior in high school after participating in a ride-along with an SDPD officer. Koegel graduated from Ramona High School. She received her degree from The University of Nevada- Reno, in Criminal Justice. All recruits went through an extensive screening process before being invited to the academy. “This is probably within 5 to 7 percent of all the applicants that we’ve gotten,” says Lt. Steve Waldheim. In the past, the San Diego Police Department has been understaffed. They currently have 1,800 officers but are budgeted for over 2,000. Lt. Waldheim says they the department needs more officers on the streets.“We need more officers in patrol so that they are out answering radio calls that can lower our response times.”The average salary for a San Diego Police recruit is ,000. After they become an officer, that number jumps to around ,000. “The salary now with SDPD, at the end of these pay raises that city council approved, we will be on par with the rest of the agencies around San Diego County,” says Lt. Waldheim. The recruits official first day will be on Monday. The academy graduation is expected towards the end of November. 1569
