Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Jon Klassen recalls a moment that occurred around 2 a.m.—just a few hours after the gunfire ceased at the Route 91 Music Festival.  He calls it “one of the most meaningful, symbolic things” he has ever seen in 30 years in the business.Klassen was working with other paramedics and a crime scene investigator, combing through the grisly aftermath of the concert grounds, helping to confirm fatalities when one woman in particular stood out.“She just was so beautiful and peaceful,” Klassen recalls. “And quiet.”He said it almost just looked like she was laying there, watching TV, when he noticed something around her eye.“Just one tear drop,” he said, still sounding like he has trouble believing what he saw. He remembers reacting to it and just thinking, “me too.”“I am so with you, dear.”Klassen would soon learn that this woman, one of the 58 victims whose lives were cut short by a gunman perched in a hotel room, was 46-year-old Lisa Patterson. A mother of three.Her husband, Robert, went through a 22-hour ordeal to track down his wife, as detailed in a heart-wrenching account in a local newspaper.Upon hearing word that this deputy fire chief had something he would like to share if it’s something Lisa’s family would want to hear, Robert contacted Klassen.“We had a great conversation. And it was comforting and closing and cathartic for him. And I was able to tell this 16-year-old kid, ‘Your mom was beautiful, and peaceful and quiet.’”The two have spent some time together since that initial phone conversation, and Klassen now considers Bob Patterson a friend.Despite the fact that it has been four weeks since the attack, very little information has come to light and many questions remain, including the timing of when security guard Jesus Campos, the first to arrive at the gunman’s room, arrived on scene. Authorities have offered varying accounts in the weeks since. There is also still no word on a motive.But none of that frustrates Klassen. He says these things take time and that investigators are doing their jobs as best they can.He prefers to focus on the good he has seen in the community since the attack, because he says that makes the healing process easier.“I think that people are helping us heal--and healing themselves in the process—by doing good things for other people.”Will Las Vegas rebound?“Absolutely,” he said, and added without missing a beat, “We already are.” 2466

COVID-19 has boosted a number of essential and online businesses to the point where they need to hire hundreds of people. Now, some of these companies are getting creative with hiring during the pandemic."This is about actionality and giving everyone whatever ways that are necessary to them to be able to find work. Our teams have been trying to come up with creative ways to connect people and work," said Carl Schweihs, the president of PeopleManagement at TrueBlue, a national staffing company that helps businesses, big and small.Schweihs says their team decided to try out a drive-thru hiring event. TrueBlue is running the events through its Staff Management |SMX business."We did one of these in April in Pennsylvania, and we saw a lot of success, so we were able to hire about as many people in one day as we had done in a week in the past," said Schweihs.The company saw so much success that True Blue decided to offer the drive-thru service to other clients, as well."We saw a lot of people were interested in it. They weren’t used to necessarily video interviewing and there was a comfort factor in still being close to someone, still being able to ask questions, that just weren’t there on the video side," explained Schweihs.How it works is applicants fill out all of their information ahead of time online. Then, True Blue schedules certain times for people to drive up and interview through their car window. Schweihs says they're able to interview more candidates in less time."Another thing is, we do interviews on all of our jobs and I think it also shows, especially in warehousing and distribution jobs attendance is a big issue, so by people being able to show up to an interview at a scheduled time, it also gives comfort in us and our customers that they're going to show up and be in attendance when they actually do take the job," said Schweihs.Drive-thru hiring is gaining ground across the country. In California, the Tulare County Employment Connection is hosting its first drive-thru event to fill 40 electrical and solar installation positions."I'm a little bit old fashioned. I like the face-to-face, and I know a lot of people do. Just the safety matter of it right now during the pandemic, following safety guidelines, I think it's a very good idea to be able to drive through and make it quick, where there's not very much contact, but at the same time, you're having that face to face with employers," said Monica Andrade, a business resource specialist with Tulare County Employment Connection.Andrade says employers will also have an opportunity to have a more in-depth interview with some candidates by having the candidate pull over and conduct a socially distant interview outside in a separate area. So far, True Blue has hosted more than 20 drive-thru hiring events, with more planned across the country. 2855

Consumers are going to have to wait a little longer to shop the Toys "R" Us liquidation sales.The company had said it expected the sales to start Thursday. But there's been a delay, a company spokesperson told CNNMoney Thursday morning. It now expects sales to likely start Friday.The iconic toy giant announced last week that it will shut or sell all of its 735 US stores.Shoppers looking to snag a bargain should act fast when the sales start."It will be quick," said Chuck Tatelbaum, a director with Tripp Scott, a Florida law firm, on how quickly the shelves will empty. "No more than 60 days, closer to 30 days."The more popular and favorite toys tend to move the fastest, and inventory is likely already slim."The [stores] haven't gotten a lot of new inventory in the last month or two, so a lot of the popular things have probably already sold out," said Tatelbaum.Consumers with Toys "R" Us gift cards and Endless Earnings e-gift cards should also hurry. The retailer will honor these forms of payment until April 20. Stores will no longer accept coupons or other rewards.Stores will accept returns on products purchased before the liquidation for the next 30 days. All purchases made after liquidation sales begin are final, which means they cannot be returned or exchanged.Consumers planning on going to the store for one last walk up and down the aisles to reminisce could face a different reality."People will go for one last time, but I am not sure it will translate into buying," said Tatelbaum. COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- "Tonight, it feels like our tears will never stop and the lump in our throats is (too) big to breathe through," Todd Allen wrote Thursday evening.His son, 2-year-old Brody, became the center of a community-wide September Christmas celebration in their small community just outside of Cincinnati after the Allen family revealed the toddler likely would not survive until Dec. 25. According to Allen, doctors now predict he may not survive until Halloween."There is no easy way to say this but Brody's body is failing him," Allen wrote in the Team Brody Facebook group. "We have been told that Brody may have only days left with us. Our hearts are absolutely broken."Brody was born with a rare brain cancer, the symptoms of which did not emerge until he had developed four serious tumors. After 98 days of treatment, there were five, and doctors at Cincinnati Children's Hospital said they could no longer help. At that time, they predicted he would live no longer than Oct. 5.The family took Brody home and redecorated their house for Christmas, hoping to at least make his last months happy and comfortable. Todd Allen took time off from his job as an over-the-road trucker. When neighbors learned about the out-of-season celebration, they decorated their own homes, sent cards to the family and even held a Christmas parade Sept. 23.Memories of that kindness have helped the family cope with Thursday's news, Allen wrote. As they have in the past, they plan to "trust that God has a plan," keep Brody comfortable and remain grateful for the support of everyone who joins them on their journey."Brody is here," Allen wrote. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Coronado Lifeguards confirmed a shark sighting on Coronado Beach Tuesday afternoon. According to a message posted on Facebook by police, the 12-foot-long white shark was spotted just off the shore of in the North Beach area just before 2 p.m. Lifeguards posted warning signs shortly after the sighting to let beachgoers know about the sighting. Lifeguards chose not to close the beach because the shark was not seen "engaging with anyone in the water.""The lifeguard was out on a paddle board about 100 yards from the shoreline, just past the surf in 6 to 8 feet of water, just before 2 p.m. when he saw the shark appear next to him. It was larger than his 11-foot paddle board," the department said.
