CVS hears the Amazon footsteps -- and the pharmacy giant is wasting no time trying to get ahead of any Jeff Bezos plan to disrupt the drug store business the way that he has the rest of retail.CVS said Monday that it plans to offer next day delivery of prescription drugs nationwide in 2018. In some urban markets, CVS will even deliver on the same day.A program to deliver both medications and a select offering of other CVS products from the front of the store will begin in Manhattan on December 4.CVS CEO Larry Merlo made the announcements during the company's earnings conference call with analysts.The news comes just a few weeks after reports surfaced that Amazon had received wholesale pharmacy licenses in a dozen states.That move would potentially allow Amazon to sell prescription medications online.The speculation caused the shares of CVS and rival Walgreens to fall, as did pharmacy benefits manager company Express Scripts, a competitor of the CVS-owned PBM Caremark.The stocks of drug distributors Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen and McKesson all fell too.This is because investors are worried that Amazon, which is already changing the dynamics of the grocery business thanks to its acquisition of Whole Foods, may look to do the same for drug stores.But Merlo said during the call with analysts Monday that he still sees Amazon as more of a potential ally than threat."You would never close the door on any type of partnership," Merlo said, when asked by an analyst about possibly working with Amazon.Still, CVS seems to recognize that the health care landscape is changing rapidly, and it needs to adjust. There have even been recent rumors that CVS may look to buy health insurer Aetna.Aetna scrapped plans to merge with rival Humana earlier this year due to intense regulatory scrutiny. Another insurer merger proposed by Anthem and Cigna died as well.Since then, the lines between health insurers and the pharmacy giants have grown increasingly blurred and incestuous.Anthem recently started up its own PBM, called IngenioRX, and has partnered with CVS.And Walgreens has partnered with a Blue Cross-backed PBM Prime Therapeutics to form a new mail order pharmacy company.Merlo and other CVS executives did not address any of the Aetna chatter on the conference call.But if the rumors are true -- and if an Aetna deal passed antitrust scrutiny -- then CVS appears to be on its way towards building a formidable health care/retail giant that may avoid getting Amazon-ed.  2507

(KGTV) - This weekend's stormy weather grounded, then destroyed a 75-foot Russian-built racing boat once sent to San Diego to race in the America's Cup.Around 7 a.m. Saturday, cellphone video show the large sailboat as it ran aground. Not long after, Lifeguard Captain Sean Casey says the waves went to work."Once it was aground, pretty quickly the mast broke off, and the boat literally broke into two pieces," said Casey.Casey says the boat had been anchored more than two miles away, near the Zuniga Jetty in Point Loma."There were high winds and rough conditions out of Point Loma. Assuming the anchor line just broke," said Casey.The boat was named Age Of Russia.According to a 1992 Los Angeles Times story, it was built in Leningrad for six million rubles. Under current conversion rates, six million rubles is valued at about ,000.A Russian group of yachtmen sent the boat to San Diego in 1992 to compete in the America's Cup, but that group was never sanctioned by race officials to compete. Because the group couldn't afford to bring it back, the boat was slated to taken to be taken to the Miramar Landfill and flattened. But then a buyer came forward.Casey says recently, it had been used for tours of the bay, before its final, unscheduled trip Saturday. Its frantic owner ended up at the beach."Obviously his reaction was sort of shock and dismay. He was very upset when he saw it on the beach," said Casey.Casey says the boat was insured, which means the cleanup costs could be covered."The contractor will likely have to use heavy equipment, dump trucks, to break up the remaining pieces and take it to the landfill," said Casey.Casey says there is an ongoing problem of boats without slips on the bay, being anchored in the Zuniga Jetty, and becoming loose during stormy weather. In 2019, the City Council amended San Diego’s Municipal Code to restrict open-water boat anchoring near Zuniga Jetty Shoal to two hours. 1960

CINCINNATI, Ohio — While the United States and allies began military operations intended to cripple Syria's ability to use chemical weapons, a local doctor was waiting nervously to hear if his family was OK. Dr. Humam Akbik was born in Syria. He now lives in the Tri-State, but his mom, sister and brother still live in Damascus. As the military operation got underway Friday night (Saturday morning in Syria), Akbik said he received a text from his wife's family that the city was shaking and there was smoke everywhere."We couldn't get in touch with them for a few hours," he said. "That was pretty unnerving."Thankfully, Akbik's family members were all OK.Akbik said he hopes the airstrikes were effective in sending a message to the Syrian government that the use of chemical weapons isn't acceptable."It looks like there's a new norm of using chemical weapons ... I think it's time for the international community in such a civilized world to step in and say, 'No. The use of a chemical weapon, it's never going to be the norm,'" Akbik said. "There will be a line drawn in the sand and it's going to be a hard line this time. We'll stop it no matter what."Helping refugeesAkbik is part of a nonprofit organization called Atlantic Humanitarian Relief. Within a week, he'll be on his way to Jordan to help refugees."It's fascinating and amazing when you see how the good in humanity is still there," he said. The organization delivers medical and dental help, including providing medications for refugees. They even teach English, math and physics. Akbik said there's power in knowledge."Each person will be able to fight back against terrorism," he said. "To extend, and be a part of the solution, rather than being a part of the problem."Above all, the group aims to give people hope."We let them know, 'Don't be despaired because there are people outside who still care about you, think of you, and who are trying to do their best to help you,'" Akbik said. (KGTV)— More than three business owners in Coronado have been hit by criminals using fake 0 bills to make small purchases.Sam Frederick’s shop, Little Sam’s Island and Beach Fun on Coronado Island has all things fun. But last Saturday, fun was not on his mind, after somebody took advantage of his new employee.A man tried to buy three towels with a 0 bill. But at the last minute, he changed his mind to buy just one.“He realized that my guy was going to cash the 0 bill, so he puts two towels back, and he got more money that way,” Frederick said. MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodThe clerk took the bill, gave the man in change, and left. When Frederick checked the cash register that night, he said something was not right. “I knew right there… The Ben Franklin wasn’t in shape at all,” he said. Coronado police say he is not alone. Investigators are looking into at least three more counterfeit 0 bill incidents in the last week. Joshua Jordan owns Treasures from the Heart, next door. He too was hit. Then he pulled out a 0 the last minute, very apologetic, saying “can you break 0?” Jordan said. They did. But the incident happened not once, but twice. “He saw that it was an easy mark, went to the next store, came back again, and bought a little more to look better,” Jordan said. He did not use the change he got from the first transaction but paid with another fake 0 bill with the same serial number. The bill was immediately rejected by the bank the next day.“I know maybe to some companies, 0 is not much. But to me it really hurts,” Jordan said. As Coronado Police continues their investigation, they are also encouraging business owners to check each bill with a pen and a black light machine, ask for ID, or call them if they are suspicious. “Right now we are working in cooperation with the secret service to see if this is an isolated incident in Coronado, or part of a larger trend in San Diego as a whole,” Det. Anthony Flores with the Coronado Police Dept. said.Investigators describe the suspect as a slim, lighter skinned Latino or Middle Eastern man in his 20’s to 30’s.  2461
