Turns out so-called "meth gators" aren't a thing after all.A police department in Tennessee caused quite the stir on social media last week when it posted a warning asking residents to stop flushing drugs down their toilets and sinks because of fears that it could create meth gators. Now the police are saying the Facebook post wasn't meant to be taken seriously."Let us be perfectly clear: the meth gator was a humorous illustration used to highlight the dangers of flushing drugs and other substances down your toilet," the Loretto Police Department wrote 570

Three high school students in Martin County are recovering after investigators say they overdosed at two schools Tuesday and had to be hospitalized. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said the students smoked THC vape pens that were laced with an unknown substance, possibly a narcotic. Now, investigators hope to determine how the students got their hands on the laced vape pens in the first place, whether they created the concoction themselves, or if they obtained the pens from a mutual source.Martin County Schools Superintendent Laurie Gaylord called parents Tuesday afternoon to warn them of the discovery of students using vape pens on school campuses. The message said in part, "The sheriff’s office believes there is a likelihood that more students may come to be in possession of the pens and may inhale or ingest the toxins in the future.”Just after noon on Tuesday, Lt. Ryan Grimsdale said deputies were notified that a female student at South Fork High School was having a medical emergency.“It was relayed to us that they were having a seizure," Grimsdale said.Within a couple hours of that call, Grimsdale said a female and a male student at Martin County High School also had medical issues, not as severe as the one reported at South Fork High School, but at least one of the students was also going in and out of consciousness.“The symptoms were similar, but not as severe. Upset stomach and things of that nature.”Grimsdale said this is the first time he has heard of the laced vape pens making their way into local schools. He says the issue as a whole of vape pens being used to ingest harmful or illegal substances is becoming a statewide issue.“What we’re looking at now actually statewide is an epidemic where these have become the primary method for consumption of illegal substances,” Grimsdale said. Miami is seeing the worst of it, according to Grimsdale.Martin County High School parent Deborah Pelletier was concerned after getting the call from the school.“We have to look out for each other. These are not good times,” said Pelletier. She said she will be taking the advice provided by the school.“We’re going to discuss it with my granddaughter here, I am also her guardian, and I’m not quite sure what to make of it yet.”Grimsdale also offers the following advice to parents: "Be involved. Pay attention. These vape pens, if you don’t know what they are look them up. Know what they look like and what to look for. Go through their book bags, look through their rooms to be actively involved, educated and informed. Pay attention.”"Kids are supposed to go to school and sitting in classrooms being educated and getting yelled at for running down the hallway. They’re not supposed to be getting transported out by ambulance because of a drug overdose,” Grimsdale said. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said about 100 citations have been written for students who have brought vape pens to school this school year. None of those citations indicate the vape pens were laced with anything illicit. Multiple Martin County students overdosed today on vape pens mixed with another dangerous substance. 3138

There have been 971 cases of measles reported in the United States this year, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. This means 2019, which is not quite half over, now has the greatest number of cases in a single year in nearly three decades. The number of cases in 1994 was 963, which was lower than in 1992 when there were 2,237 cases."Measles is preventable and the way to end this outbreak is to ensure that all children and adults who can get vaccinated, do get vaccinated. Again, I want to reassure parents that vaccines are safe, they do not cause autism. The greater danger is the disease that vaccination prevents," said CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield.Measles was eliminated in the United States in 2000, meaning it was no longer continuously transmitted in the country.Cases have been reported in 26 states this year so far.New York has been the largest contributor to this year's unfortunate milestone with nearly 700 cases of measles reported this year in the state. Most of those cases have been in Orthodox Jewish communities with low vaccination rates.Clark County in Washington state had the second-largest outbreak in the US this year with more than 70 cases reported. The county has low vaccination rates."If these outbreaks continue through summer and fall, the United States may lose its measles elimination status. That loss would be a huge blow for the nation and erase the hard work done by all levels of public health. The measles elimination goal, first announced in 1963 and accomplished in 2000, was a monumental task," the agency said in statement. "Before widespread use of the measles vaccine, an estimated 3 to 4 million people got measles each year in the United States, along with an estimated 400 to 500 deaths and 48,000 hospitalizations."The elimination of the virus in the United States is attributed to widespread measles, mumps and rubella vaccination and a "strong public health infrastructure to detect and contain measles," according to the CDC."Your decision to vaccinate will protect your family's health and your community's well-being," Redfield said. "CDC will continue working with public health responders across our nation to bring this outbreak to an end."The cases in the Unites States are imported from international travel and then local outbreaks begin when the highly contagious illness spreads to those who are not immune to the virus from vaccination or having recovered from measles. With the busy summer travel season just about to get underway there's concern about continued importation of measles among vacationers. In communities with 95% or more of residents who are vaccinated against the virus, herd immunity works. That's when unvaccinated people are protected because so many of those around them are.Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases 2896

There’s a disturbing trend of hidden cameras being found in rental properties and hotel rooms, and security experts are explaining how they’re getting there and what folks should do if they find one. A vacation in paradise quickly turned south for a couple in California who took a video after finding a hidden camera inside a fake smoke detector. “I actually came up to it and noticed that there was a hidden camera right here,” says the man. This was inside the rental property they were calling home for their getaway, and unfortunately these kind of finds are part of a disturbing trend of people finding hidden cameras inside rental properties. “I don’t ever think to check for it, kinda creepy to think about,” says Amy Billeaudeaux, visitor. A 2019 survey by IPX1031 found that 58% of participants were worried about hidden cameras inside Airbnbs, and 11% of them actually say they found a hidden camera inside an Airbnb property before.“Look around the room, does something look out of place? Is something not looking like it should be in that room,” says Adam Coughran. Coughran spent nearly 20 years as a police officer in Orange County, California, assigned to the tourist orientated policing unit, which focuses on crime around the Disneyland area. He says hidden cameras are an emerging trend, not only in rental properties but in hotel rooms too. And they are not placed there by the hotels.“Hotels are primarily concerned with cameras in the big public areas, the lobbies, play or recreation area,” says Coughran. “To find cameras inside a hotel room is not common practice.” The cameras could be hidden in nearly anything from smoke detectors to lights, even fans. It’s no doubt unsettling. But what laws protect you if one is found? Coughran says it can be a bit of a gray area when it comes to the laws. “In some states things are very cut and dry. Where they can be, where they can’t be. And virtually every state has some sort of law that discloses where they are on the premises, whether interior or exterior,” says Coughran. While the laws can be dicey, Airbnb has already taken action against hosts who have had cameras on their properties. Their rules now state: "If you’re a host and you have any type of security camera or other recording device in or around a listing, even if it’s not turned on or hooked up, we require that you indicate its presence in your house rules. We also require you to disclose if an active recording is taking place. If a host discloses the device after booking, Airbnb will allow the guest to cancel the reservation and receive a refund."For those we spoke to staying in one of the 150,000 hotel rooms in Las Vegas, some say they’ll think twice. “I think it’s something you need to keep your eye out for, for sure, because someone is watching you on the other end,” says Carlisa Singleton, visitor. 2867
