SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Plans to replace an aging terminal at San Diego International Airport cleared a hurdle Thursday, with the Airport Authority Board's unanimous approval of the Environmental Impact Report for its major redevelopment plan.The new Terminal 1 would replace the current 53-year-old terminal, and offer 11 additional gates and upgraded amenities for passengers, including new restaurants, seating, shops and additional security checkpoints.Officials are hoping to break ground on the terminal sometime next year, with the first phase of gates anticipated to open in 2024.RELATED: Travel website ranks San Diego International as best airport in the US"Today, we took an important vote that will help ensure our airport can accommodate expected passenger growth well into the future and ensure our customers and their families are treated to a better airport experience than today's Terminal 1 can provide," said April Bolind, Airport Authority Board Chairman. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted Monday to place two ballot measures on the March 2020 ballot, including a hotel tax hike that would fund a convention center expansion, homeless services and infrastructure improvements.The tax increase proposed by San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer would raise the city's transient occupancy tax from 10.5% to as high as 15.75% in certain areas of the city, which supporters argue would reap an estimated billion over 42 years.The funding would allow the city to purchase a parcel of land adjacent to the convention center that is currently owned by Fifth Avenue Landing. Once it purchases the land, the city would expand the convention center by roughly 400,000 square feet, from roughly 800,000 square feet to about 1.2 million square feet.RELATED: Hotel tax increase proposed for San DiegoThe land cost is expected to be roughly million, part of an estimated allocation of .5 billion for the purchase and convention center upkeep and marketing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Padres are scheduled to face an opponent at Petco Park for the first time in 2020 Monday, nearly four months later than planned, playing the Los Angeles Angels in an exhibition game.The March 26 start to the regular season -- which included the Padres opening day game against the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park -- was all wiped out by the coronavirus outbreak.Under the revised schedule which calls for the regular season to begin Thursday, teams can play up to three exhibition games. The Padres other exhibition game will be on Wednesday, also against the Angels, at Angel Stadium, in preparation for opening day Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park."I think everybody's excited to play somebody else," Padres first-year manager Jayce Tingler told reporters in a Zoom conference Friday. "We've been banging heads for a while. It's going to be really good getting to see another team and just getting to go compete."The Padres played 16 intrasquad games since beginning "summer camp" July 3.Like most sporting events around the world, fans will be barred from attending Monday's game under public health directives prohibiting public events and gatherings.The game will be different from Padre games in past seasons for several reasons.Major League Baseball has instituted a set of health and safety protocols that will effect the game even before the first pitch.
