UNITED NATIONS, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called on the UN Security Council to quickly respond to and take actions on Israel's deadly attack against a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza."China is shocked by Israel's attack on a multinational convoy carrying international aid to Gaza which resulted in heavy casualties," said Yang Tao, a counsellor of the Chinese permanent mission to the United Nations, at the 15-nation council's emergency meeting."We condemn Israel's actions targeting humanitarian workers and civilians," he said. "We support a quick response by the Security Council and take necessary actions."Yang also expressed serious concern about the "grim" humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, especially the Gaza Strip."We urge Israel immediately and fully implement Security Council resolution 1860, fully open border crossings, lift blockade on the Gaza Strip so as to allow unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and allow local people to achieve early recovery and restore a normal life," he added.The council was currently meeting behind closed doors to discuss the text of a draft presidential statement submitted by Turkey.

BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) -- China Tuesday released details of its green-car subsidy program designed to boost the nation's auto industry and cut vehicle emissions.Through the program, subsidies of up to 60,000 yuan (8,784 U.S. dollars) will be given to buyers of pure electric vehicles in the five cities chosen for the pilot program, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement on its website.Buyers of plug-in hybrid cars will receive up to 50,000 yuan in subsidies.The cities chosen for the pilot program are Shanghai, Changchun, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Hefei.China is the world's largest auto market.

BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- China's local governments should step up efforts to close 10 million kilowatts of outdated coal-fueled power station capacity this year, Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said Friday.This year is crucial to completing the country's energy saving and emission reduction goals as set out in the Eleventh Five-Year Plan (from 2006 to 2010), Li said in a letter to a national work conference held in Beijing discussing the elimination of backward production capacity.Official figures show China's unit gross domestic product (GDP) energy consumption fell 14.38 percent during the first four years of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan.
