PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - Snow came down steadily and heavy at times in the Pine Valley area of East San Diego County Thursday. At Sunrise Hwy and Old Highway 80, the California Highway Patrol and Caltrans established a checkpoint requiring snow chains to proceed toward higher elevations of Mt. Laguna. The drive eastbound on Interstate 8 from San Diego was largely heavy rain and wind until Highway 79, when the rain turned to snow at about 3,700 feet. No one was injured, officials said. 10News spoke to a family that drove up from El Cajon to see the snow. Grandpa Tommy Diaz said he didn't think the drive was too bad; there was some ice on the road. He just kept it slow. "You've got to be mindful of other cars around you," said Diaz. "Because there's always that guy who want to go fast. PALM HARBOR, Fla. — A rare two-headed southern black racer snake was recently found at a home in Palm Harbor.Kay Rogers said her cat brought the snake into the home through the doggy door. The cat placed the snake on the carpet."She brings us presents all the time. This day, my daughter sent me a message. 'Mom, she brought in a snake, and it has two heads,'" Rogers saif. "I think this tops it, but she's an adventurous cat for sure."Rogers said her 13-year-old daughter, Avery, placed the snake in a plastic container. She said her daughter and her son like learning about reptiles."We went and got like a habitat setup for it. I was talking to a couple different reptile specialists and they were kind of helping me through what to do with him like getting him a heating pad and trying to feed him," Rogers said.The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission shared the story on Facebook. FWC said the phenomenon, bicephaly, is uncommon, but happens during embryo development when two monozygotic twins failed to separate, leaving the heads conjoined onto a single body.FWC says that both heads' tongue flicks and react to movement, but not always in the same way. Two-headed snakes are unlikely to survive in the wild, as the two brains make different decisions that inhibit the ability to feed or escape from predators."Because of the two head thing, he's very uncoordinated and couldn't get to the food very well. It was like one head would see the food and try to go for it, the other would be going the other way and pulling him back," Rogers said.The snake is currently being cared for and monitored by FWC staff."He was really an easy pet," Rogers said. I really just wanted to kind of see him thrive and have people that would take care of him and give him the best chance. I know, well my daughter's research shows they don't live well in the wild at all. In almost every county nationwide, a full-time minimum wage job isn't enough to cover a 1-bedroom apartment.And when it comes to disparities, the numbers tell the story. About 44% of Black Americans and 42% of Latinx are rent burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing. People living in the Florida Panhandle are scrambling to prepare their homes and businesses for Hurricane Michael.The Category 2 storm is currently in the Gulf of Mexico, and it’s expected to gain strength as it makes landfall Wednesday.Officials ordered an evacuation by noon Tuesday in Pensacola Beach, but for those residents staying, they are spending the day preparing.Randall King lived through Hurricane Opal, a Category 3 storm that hit the coast in 1995. He says his Pensacola home took in about 6 feet of water during that devastating storm. That’s why he doesn’t take warnings lightly.“If you're that close to the cone of uncertainty, always be certain to be prepared,” he says. However, everyone didn’t spend the day preparing for the storm.
