(KGTV) - A private elementary school in the North County is hoping an extensive safety plan could help secure a waiver to reopen the school in mid-August.When Governor Newsom issued his order stopping in-person schooling for counties on the watch list, plans to reopen came to a sudden halt. Amanda Johnston is principal at St. Mary's School in Escondido, a Catholic K-8 school. School officials started developing the plan in April. It includes limiting enrollment, which now stands at about 170 students. That will allow the school to social distance in each classroom."We can fit 18 to 22 students depending on the room, and each student has at least six feet of space in all directions," said Johnston.Within the room, each desk will contain plexiglass desk shields."24 inches tall and three sides. No matter which direction they're looking, they are protected," said Johnston.Other protective measures include deep cleanings at the end of each day, sanitizing surfaces throughout the day and hand washing stations.Teachers will wear face shields. Masks are mandatory for students in the third grade and higher. Masks will be strongly encouraged for younger children.Teachers will rotate in, while students most stay put, except for breaks and outdoor lessons."We're really appreciative of the fact there is going to be a potential waiver to reopen," said Johnston.Johnston is hoping the school's plans will help them secure an exemption. The state has said public school districts and private schools can seek a waiver from county health officers to reopen elementary schools."We definitely plan to take all the necessary steps once we understand all the criteria and the process," said Johnston.As the school awaits that guidance, the work continues. (KGTV) - City leaders in Encinitas plan to ban gas-powered leaf blowers to help curb the effects of climate change.They're hosting a public meeting about the ban Monday night, May 13, at 6 p.m. at the Encinitas Community Center (1140 Oakcrest Park Drive).The ban is part of the City's bigger Climate Action Plan, which the City Council approved in January of 2018. It calls for a 41 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 when compared to 2012 baseline levels.The plan says removing emissions from gas-powered leaf blowers would remove 142 Metric Tons of CO2 by 2030. That's the equivalent of taking roughly 25 cars off the road.While it's not a huge improvement, people in Encinitas say every small step will help."I think they ought to be eliminated everywhere," says David Winkler, who goes to Encinitas to meet friends. "The less reliance on fossil fuels, the better.""People come from all over the world here, so we should make it as clean and beautiful as we can," says Encinitas resident Linda, who declined to give her last name. "Anything we can do to lessen pollution is always a good thing."Other North County cities already have bans in place. Solana Beach and Del Mar both prohibit the use of gas-powered leaf blowers.City leaders in Encinitas say their rule is different because it bases the ban on environmental concerns, rather than noise pollution.The ban only covers two-stroke leaf blowers. Other gas-powered tools like weed whackers and chain saws will still be allowed.If the ban is approved, it will take effect immediately for all city-run operations. After three months, any business licensed to operate in Encinitas will have to comply. And that is exactly what happened to a mother and daughter duo from Escondido. Ruth and Emilia have had to find other ways to perform their environmentally themed music."It's always entertaining, you never know what is going to happen."The two have a love for children's music, as their lyrics, and performances always provide a learning experience for their young audience."We have two messages in our music," says Ruth. "One is taking care of the environment, and the other is acceptance of others to make the world a better place." Emilia says one other goal is also to keep the music fun and lively. "So that it would be something grown-ups don't mind listening to in the car, but also that kids enjoy dancing to."Prior to the pandemic, Ruth and Emilia planned a summer tour of libraries, children's museums, and kids festivals, but when the Coronavirus hit, those plans changed."Our CD release party was canceled because it happened the same day all the stay at home starting taking place."So the duo has had to adapt, and change the way they could reach their audience."We found other outlets, like doing live shows on Facebook and on Instagram. And even seeing if we could expand to people we wouldn't necessarily see on our tour."However, some good news came from the pandemic, as it brought mother and daughter closer together. Emilia has made her way back to Escondido for the time being, from her home in Los Angeles. "We don't get to see each other everyday," says Emilia.
