San Diego (KGTV)- Heart- pounding moments for visitors at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Powerful gusts tossed riders on the Balloon Safari from side to side. Riders on the balloon held on tight during the gusty landing. “There were some points where the basket was almost tipped completely sideways,” says Jordan Lapidot, who was visiting the park with her family yesterday afternoon. “I have this image in my mind of this guy, and he’s grabbing the outside of the cage as they get just thrown.”The San Diego Zoo Safari Park says the balloon has a long cable in the middle of the cage that safely brings it down from the sky. That cable never broke during the windy ride. “They were trying to get it down as quickly as possible,” says Lapidot. The Safari Park tells 10News if the wind reads over 29 miles per hour they will shut the ride down. They sent us a statement about the incident, saying in part: “As the sudden storm arrived and winds picked up, some operations at the Park, like Balloon Safari and Flightline were closed to public use.”No one was hurt while on the ride. 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Witnesses are coming forward to share what they saw just moments after the fiery crash involving a green Lamborghini Sunday morning.Max Afifi, a taxi driver, was working nearby when he saw the commotion. Afifi took several pictures of the green Lamborghini completely engulfed in flames. He says firefighters were rushing to put out the fire. The San Diego County Medical Examiner identified the driver of the car as 33-year-old Michael Llamas, a medical marijuana entrepreneur.SLIDESHOW: Lamborghini crashes downtownAccording to Llamas' LinkedIn page, he helped found the company Medical Marijuana, Inc. They sent 10News the following statement about their former CEO:“The company has learned that Michael Llamas died in a traffic accident over the weekend in San Diego. The company mourns the loss of one of its visionary founders.  Mr. Llamas was an incredible philanthropist and changed countless lives throughout the world.”A female passenger with Llamas at the time of the accident has not been identified, but authorities said she was ejected from the car.Paramedics rushed her to a local hospital, but her condition is unknown.  1199

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The DMV is apologizing for long wait times as they work through a new queuing system and problems with the REAL ID.Wait times (without an appointment) used to be under two hours, now they're closer to 4-5 hours. The DMV issued this statement to 10News:The issue is employees have to manually enter the ID number given to each customer, since a new system went online two weeks ago. The ID number consists of your initials and the last four digits of your phone number.The process prior was completely automatic.The other issue relates to the REAL ID. Employees are taking more time to explain to customers what they need to have in order to get the ID. Hundreds went to the San Diego County Registrar’s Office Saturday, to turn in their ballots three days before election day. The Secretary of State announced that voter registration reached an all-time high in California, with more than 78% of the citizens eligible to vote.  393

San Diego (KGTV)- In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, hundreds are giving back in the best way they can. This morning volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clean up Balboa Park. 14-year-old Maya Hundley spent the morning planting flowers with her family at the MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project. "I think it's important any day to help out, especially today," says Hundley. "Instead of being lazy or taking it as an extra day off, you can use that time to make a difference in the world." More than 300 volunteers spent the morning cleaning up Balboa Park. "People are doing anything from planting trees and flowers to raking leaves and hauling brush," says Melissa Spence with First United Methodist Church of San Diego. The city's parks and recreation department was on hand, showing volunteers which areas needed the most care. The MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project includes Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Unitarians working together. This is the 11th year the group has come together for the event. "As people of different faiths, we recognize that God gave us this earth we're being called to care for it in the best way that we can," says Spence.
