Even before the blaze at Notre Dame was extinguished, conspiracy theories and fake news about the fire had ricocheted around the internet. The most egregious examples of disinformation originated in the darker corners of the internet but many found bigger audiences on social media. One prominent conspiracy theory revolved around the claim that the fire had been deliberately started.InfoWars, a fringe website which is known for spreading conspiracy theories, published a story which suggested the fire had been intentionally set.The claim was based on a single erroneous tweet, which was later deleted. The InfoWars story remains online.Paris Prosecutor Rémy Heitz said that while the cause of the fire has not been established, it was likely "accidental.""Nothing shows that it's an intentional act" he said in a press conference on Tuesday.Yet some social media users made claims that went beyond even what was claimed by InfoWars. On Twitter, a fake account made to look like one operated by CNN claimed the fire was caused by terrorism. The account, which was created in April, was only removed several hours after CNN publicly called out Twitter over it.Conspiracy theories about the origin of the fire were also abundant on the internet message board 4chan, where users resorted to using trolling tactics that are designed to aggravate the media.Social media users with big followings promoted the conspiracy theories, with some attempting to blame racial or religious minorities for the outbreak of the fire. One strategy appeared to be the use of old and unrelated articles about Catholic churches being desecrated in France to insinuate that the Notre Dame fire was an intentional act.Other accounts posted an erroneous 2016 article about gas tanks and "Arabic documents" being uncovered near the cathedral.Big social media companies appeared to struggle to contain the spread of the content.A YouTube feature designed to combat misinformation even linked the fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral to the September 11 terrorist attacks. The company blamed the mix-up on its algorithms. 2132

Colton Underwood, a former NFL player, contestant on "The Bachelorette," and star of "The Bachelor" said on his Instagram on Friday that he tested positive for coronavirus. He is one of nearly 18,000 Americans to have a confirmed coronavirus case. "I tested positive and I have been following all of the social distancing rules since last week. My symptoms started a few days ago," Underwood said. "I was tested and just received my results today. For anyone out there that is hesitant to self quarantine... please do yourself and your loved ones a favor and stay home. We will all beat this and come out stronger on the other side."Underwood appeared on the preseason roster of a number of NFL teams, including the Charges, Eagles and Raiders. He then went on to place fourth in the 14th season of "The Bachelorette." Following his appearance on the show, he was selected to star in the 23rd season of "The Bachelor," which aired in 2019. 951

Carbon monoxide poisoning at a motel in Canada sent 46 people to the hospital, including 15 in critical condition, city officials said. The fire department responded to an alarm at Super 8 Motel in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Tuesday morning after carbon monoxide gas was detected in the building. At the scene, fire crews evacuated 52 people -- a majority of whom were hospitalized -- and one dog, the city tweeted Tuesday. Winnipeg Animal Services provided care for the dog."Today's incident at a Winnipeg hotel was not a gas leak. It was a carbon monoxide poisoning," Manitoba Hydro tweeted. "CO is produced by the incomplete combustion/ventilation of gas stoves, heating boilers, furnaces, propane barbecues, gas-powered water heaters & clothes dryers."The gas company said while natural gas has a rotten egg smell that helps with detection, carbon monoxide is odorless. For it to be detected, one needs a carbon monoxide alarm. The initial symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are flu-like, but without a fever. They may include dull headache, weakness, dizziness and nausea. High-level poisoning can result in vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vision and loss of consciousness. When carbon monoxide levels are higher and develop more rapidly -- for example, from generators in residential spaces -- mental confusion can set in rapidly. Victims may lose muscle control without being aware of the flu-like symptoms and will probably succumb to poisoning if they are not rescued. 1506

Complaints about coronavirus-related scams are surging. The Federal Trade Commission says complaints are double what they were a week ago – around 7,800 so far this year. And, that's just what's been reported.Officials say the scams have cost Americans nearly million, with the average person losing about 0. The top coronavirus-related fraud complaints are travel-based with refunds and cancellations.Other scams include reports about problems with online shopping, mobile texting scams, and people posing as government officials or businesses. There are also claims about methods and supplements that can boost your immunity to the virus that simply aren't true. CBD is one of them. The National Consumers League is warning people that's false. In general, the organization says many CBD products are unregulated, untested and possibly mislabeled.“I’m very confident there's not a pill, a supplement, something that everyone should be running out and grabbing that's going to keep them from getting this virus,” said Dr. Ned Legare with MDVIP. Dr. Legare says the evidence about boosting immunity can fall short. He says good nutrition works. A poor diet makes you susceptible to disease. Also, he says staying physically active causes your antibodies and white blood cells to circulate faster. That means they could detect and fight bugs more quickly. Being active and well rested lowers stress hormones, which reduces your chances of getting sick. Studies have proven healthy adults who are sleep deprived are more likely to get a cold.“Good sleep doesn’t just start when we get into bed. It’s more of a wind down process and destressing process right to get good quality sleep, so you're not in bed kind of tossing and turning kind of anxious," said Dr. Fareeha Hussaini, a sleep specialist and assistant professor at the University of South Florida.Another false claim about fighting coronavirus is that hot baths, showers or steam therapies kill the virus. Steam therapy can only thin mucus and ease congestion that comes with cold or flu symptoms. The Food and Drug Administration has also warned several companies that make essential oils, teas and other supplements to stop making virus fighting claims.Click here for 2243
