SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new study released Wednesday by a University of California San Diego professor is making claims about inhumane treatment of asylum seekers in detention centers along the border."Over 1 out of every 3, or 34.7%, of the asylum-seeking heads of households reported issues related to conditions in immigration detention, treatment in detention, or medical issues," the report headed by Tom K. Wong, PhD, said. He is an Associate Professor of Political Science at UC San Diego.The study was conducted from October 2018 through June of 2019, with 7,300 migrants.Here are some of the findings:Among those who reported issues in immigration detention, 61.8% reported issues related to food and water, including being fed frozen or spoiled food, not having enough to eat, not being given formula for infants, not being given water, and having to drink dirty water, among others;Among those who reported issues in immigration detention, 34.5% reported issues related to hygiene, including not being able to shower, dirty bathrooms, and not having a toothbrush or toothpaste to brush their teeth, among others;Among those who reported issues in immigration detention, 45.6% reported issues related to not being able to sleep, overcrowded conditions, confinement, and the temperature being too cold in la hielera (ice box);232 asylum-seeking heads of households reported verbal abuse, including being told “go back to your f****** country” and “you’re an ape,” among other examples;40 asylum-seeking heads of households reported physical abuse, including being thrown against a wall, among other examples; and18 asylum-seeking heads of households reported having their physical property taken, including their passports and travel documents, among other examplesCustoms and Border Protection's Transport, Escort, Detention and Search (TEDS) Directive is outlined as follows:"Regular hold room checks should be conducted and recorded to ensure proper occupancy levels, safety, hygiene, and the availability of drinking water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local sailor who tested positive for coronavirus is sharing details of his ordeal online."I'm coming to you from my patio, not out in public," said Nichoas Moore.Moore posted a video on his Facebook page Sunday afternoon. "I got my results back just a little big ago. Thursday to talk about food insecurity among our nation’s military and veterans.San Diego County has the largest concentration of military and veterans in the world. The CEO of the company shared the group’s mission with lawmakers and how they can feed military families who don’t have enough to eat. Feeding San Diego works to serve thousands of people through food rescue. The organization gathers quality food that would typically go to waste. “Last year we rescued 24 million pounds of food that was going to leave the food system, and go to the waste system, from stores, farms, manufacturers and other sources,” says CEO Vince Hall. The hearing examined the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Veterans Affairs programs that provide nutrition assistance to nearly 20 million veterans across the country. Feeding San Diego serves local veterans and military members through an initiative called “Feeding Heroes.” It reaches local families and veterans on or near base, in military housing, and public schools serving students of military families. Dana Henderson, with Feeding San Diego, says the high cost of living in the county is a big reason for food insecurity. “What they are receiving is just not enough to make ends meet.” She goes on to say, “People on a daily basis are having to make those tough decisions between a nutritious meal or paying other types of expenses.”Over 2.3 million meals were distributed to veteran and military families through Feeding San Diego last year. 1818

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego businessman pleaded guilty in federal court on Wednesday to charges of bank fraud and tax evasion in connection with failing to report hundreds of thousands of dollars in income and fraudulently obtaining a mortgage.David Daughtrey, 60, of El Cajon, admitted to evading taxes by failing to report 8,612 of income to the IRS and also fraudulently obtaining a mortgage for his .8 million home using a third party, U.S. District Attorney officials said.As part of his plea agreement, Daughtrey will pay ,016,457.91 in restitution to the IRS. He's scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 16.RELATED: San Diego businesswoman pleads guilty in liquor license loan fraud"People who cheat on their taxes are cheating all other law-abiding taxpayers," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. "Mr. Daughtrey blatantly disregarded his tax obligations for years. The defendant not only abused the tax system for his own financial benefit, but conspired to commit bank fraud in order to maintain this lifestyle."Daughtrey admitted that from July 2006 until April 2016, he conspired with others to commit bank fraud and tax evasion. As part of the fraud scheme, he directed another person to submit a mortgage application to Wells Fargo to buy a .8 million five-bedroom home, officials say, and falsely claim that the fund used as a down payment belonged to a third party and the third party would be the primary homeowner.In reality, Daughtrey provided the funds and the house was intended to be his primary residence. He later submitted a false hardship letter on behalf of the third party to get the bank to modify the terms of the home loan, officials added.He also admitted that over several years, he and his spouse, who is not charged in the case, conspired to falsely report total income in tax years 2012 through 2015. Officials say in 2012, Daughtrey omitted at least 8,612 in income and the IRA tax loss for years 2012-2014 was 6,536. "Our nation’s tax system funds critical infrastructures and vital programs, including supporting our citizens and small businesses during the ongoing pandemic," said Ryan L. Korner, Special Agent in Charge, IRS Criminal Investigation. "Honest Americans’ compliance with the tax laws is imperative.
