Lowe's is slimming down to better compete with Home Depot.The company, which recently hired Marvin Ellison away from JCPenney to be its CEO, said it is shutting down its Orchard Supply Hardware stores and plans to slash inventory at its Lowes stores.The home improvement retailer did report earnings that topped forecasts on Wednesday, thanks to a healthy housing market. Mail bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc will be held without bond after making his first appearance Tuesday in a federal court in New York.The defense issued no objection to US Magistrate Judge Robert Lehrburger's decision. Sayoc's preliminary hearing was originally scheduled for Monday, but as courts are closed on Veteran's Day, his hearing has been rescheduled for Tuesday morning.In a letter, prosecutors had said they were asking that Sayoc be held without bond, based on his flight risk and the danger they said he posed to the community.Sayoc, who spent Monday night at the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan after a charter transport flight from Florida, entered the courtroom wearing a navy blue prison uniform with a beige T-shirt underneath. He did not wear handcuffs or shackles.He conferred with public defender Sarah Jane Baumgartel, who sat next to him, and answered the judge's questions. Lehrburger officially appointed Baumgartel as his counsel.After the appearance, Sayoc and Baumgartel embraced before law enforcement officers led Sayoc out of the courtroom.The 56-year-old faces five federal charges: interstate transportation of an explosive, illegal mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents and other persons, threatening interstate communications and assaulting current and former federal officers.Sayoc is accused of sending at least 16 mail bombs to several targets, including CNN, former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. None of the devices detonated, and no one was injured. Iota struck Monday evening as a Category 4 hurricane, hitting nearly the same location as Hurricane Eta two weeks earlier. By early Wednesday, Iota had dissipated over El Salvador. But the storm’s torrential rains remain a threat.Iota came ashore along almost exactly the same stretch of Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast that was devastated by an equally powerful Hurricane Eta just 13 days earlier.Iota had intensified into an extremely dangerous Category 5 storm during the day Monday, but the U.S. National Hurricane Center says it weakened slightly as it neared the coast late Monday and made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (250 kph).Eta’s torrential rains saturated the soil in the region, meaning Iota's rains have nowhere to go and could cause deadly landslides. 1125

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Oprah Winfrey is using her influence to push for justice in the police killing of Breonna Taylor.The media mogul is having dozens of billboards installed around the city of Louisville, WAVE reports. She died in the apartment hallway.Since Taylor’s death, protests have been held across the country, demanding that the officers involved be charged in her killing. Many celebrities other than Oprah have also used their platforms to call for action.For now, the shooting is under investigation by the FBI and Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron.
