SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 40 people marched into the streets Friday, to protest rent hikes, claiming it could put them out on the streets. Residents of the Morley Street Apartments in Linda Vista received notices in February about their rent increasing in May. The rent increases range from 0 to 0. Raphael Bautista of San Diego Tenants Union calls it abusive rental practices. He says the substantial rent increase started when MC Properties bought the complex. In a letter to the tenants, they explained rent hikes are due to increased taxes and insurance fees. 10News reached out to the property group for further comment but has not heard back. “The rents are between 15 and 40 percent increases, that’s gouging,” Bautista said. He says the larger problem is that it’s legal, and that’s something the group is trying to change.” “There’s no law controlling how high rent is increased,” he said. “We're pushing for rent control at two percent.” “People are feeling frustrated because most people don’t have money to pay rent (increase). We can’t afford that,” said Romeo Martinez, who lives at the Morley Street Apartments. The San Diego Tenants Union organized the protest and march. The group marched to the management office where someone came out to listen to their demands, but took no action. The management office says they will relay the groups' complaints to the owner. “We want to make sure we peaceful resolution as soon as possible,” Bautista said. “Today’s purpose wasn't really to get a decision, but we did a turn in about 25 to 30 letters from these tenants,” Bautista said. “We want to make sure we get a peaceful resolution as soon as possible.” 1695

President Donald Trump said on Thursday his maligned attorney general is safe in his job at least until November.Trump made the comment in an interview with Bloomberg News."I just would love to have him do a great job," Bloomberg quoted Trump as saying in the Oval Office.Trump has raged against Jeff Sessions since his decision to recuse himself from Russia-related matters last year. Sessions was the first Republican senator to endorse Trump as a presidential contender.Speculation that Trump may soon dismiss Sessions has increased in recent days as the two men trade snipes.Meanwhile, Republican senators have shown new openness to a new attorney general. But they have pressured Trump to wait until after the midterm elections in November. Bloomberg said Trump declined to comment when asked if he would keep Sessions past then.He told the news service he considers special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation to be an "illegal."Asked if he would comply with a subpoena from Mueller, Trump said, "I'll see what happens" and added: "I view it differently. I view it as an illegal investigation."He told Bloomberg "great scholars" have said "there never should have been a special counsel."Mueller's investigation was ordered by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in May 2017 and the scope of the investigation was laid out by Rosenstein in a classified memo. Justice Department lawyers have previously said Rosenstein is aware of the scope and activities of Mueller's investigation. 1523

It’s a victory for religious freedom sparked by a Philadelphia teen who loves the game of basketball.Mastery Charter sophomore Nasihah Thompson-King has been playing basketball since seventh-grade. She loves the game but was shocked that she was asked to remove her traditional Muslim hijab headgear during a playoff game back in February.“It was our second playoff game against Palumbo and when it was time for me to get in the game a referee told me I couldn’t play with my hijab on. I had to take it off if I wanted to play, so I decided just not to play,” said Thompson-King.At the time, the referee was enforcing a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association rule requiring athletes to get prior approval for any head garment for religious or medical reasons. But Thompson-King had never had a problem wearing her hijab before.“I just didn’t wanna take it off because of my religion,” she said. The incident sparked outrage over the constitutionality of the policy and calls for PIAA rule changes. That’s when Pennsylvania state Sen. Shariff Street got involved.“We’re asking you to change your rule books to accommodate First Amendment rights to freedom of religion and freedom of expression,” Street said. This week, the PIAA did change its policy, now stating that religious headwear is permitted without prior approval.“I was excited when I was told the news and I was happy for myself and anybody else who wears a hijab when they play basketball so they won’t have any questioning about the hijab,” said Thompson-King.“I’m absolutely proud of my Nasihah, that’s my only daughter and I’m so proud of her, of what she’s done and playing basketball and also taking a stand,” said Nasihah’s mother, Fatima Thompson.“I have two more years of basketball to play and I’m looking forward to seeing more females and males wearing their religious head covering,” said Nasihah. 1894
