OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Oceanside is home to the oldest cafe on the historic Highway 101. Appropriately named Cafe 101, when you step inside, you take a step back in time inside a 50s-style diner filled with memories and history. Café 101 has been an Oceanside fixture since 1928 for one reason. "Location, location, location," says John Daley sitting at the counter. Daley should know for several reasons. He's a developer, a third-generation Oceanside native, and former owner of Cafe 101 and much of its rich history."At one time, this was even our local bus stop for Greyhound out in front of us," adds Daley. When Camp Pendleton opened during World War II, Oceanside exploded from 5,000 people to more than 12,000. Cafe 101 was not only a drive-in diner, but it also served as a trailer park. "So those people had to have some place to live, they have to have some place to eat, and some place to recreate,” explains Daley. “So, it was just a crazy time in Oceanside history."For those Marines, Cafe 101 was like a second home and the employees who worked there were like family. Years later, when Daley and his partners bought the restaurant in the mid-80s he would see those Marines, much older now with children and grandchildren, return to the cafe to relive memories."Me being a big talker, I love to go out and say high to as many as I could recognize, and thank them for their service, and tell their kids what a great job they did to make our country free," says Daley with a smile. Cafe 101 is pure nostalgia. From home cooked food to the stainless-steel tables, the red booths, and the table side jukeboxes. But what sets Cafe 101 apart is its symbolic mural on the south wall of the cafe. It’s been featured in magazines and newspapers all over the world. That mural is what makes Cafe 101 such an essential part of Oceanside. "It was kind of iconic in a sense," says Daley. "Which is really a 101-highway mural too. We put palm trees and cool cars, and we got the ocean in there too. Nothing better along the 101 than to have all those things on it." 2205

Online shoe retailer Zappos will allow customers to buy just one shoe, or a pair of shoes in different sizes.The change, being tested this week on their website, is aimed at amputees, those with different-sized feet, and others who may have felt excluded by the shoe industry.It’s part of Zappos Adaptive, an initiative started in 2017 to “connect people with products that makes getting dressed easier for everyone” according to the company. OMAHA, Neb.  - The DEA is warning police and parents to be on the lookout for marijuana and methamphetamine laced candy this Halloween.The DEA and police agencies throughout the country have seen an increase of seizures of drug-laced edibles, including but not limited to chocolates, suckers and gummies. The DEA's Omaha Division has not identified any specific threats but issued an advisory.The items are often professionally packaged and can easily be mistaken for regular candy or baked goods. Last year the DEA found marijuana-laced candies sold in packages labeled; Munchy Way, 3 Rastateers, Twixed, Keef Kat and Rasta Reese's; had been collected during Halloween.Signs of marijuana or meth-laced candy include unusual wrapping, appearance, unusual colors, odd smell, misspelled candy labels, or candy or food that is unwrapped or unmarked.Parents and caregivers should seek immediate medical attention if a child ingests drug-laced candy and then contact local police. 988

Only a handful of countries are allowing Americans in without restrictions, and the U.S. State Department is urging all Americans to avoid international travel due to COVID-19. For those who still want to go abroad, things will likely look very different.Carol Bryant, a travel advisor, just returned from a trip to Mexico.“I went for a few reasons. One, because I love it down there. I've been going there for years,” Bryant said. “I also wanted to see what it was like, so I could tell people what my experience was.”Mexico is one of the few countries currently allowing Americans in without restrictions.“I felt safer there than I feel here," Bryant said. "I think it was a much more consistent enforcement. My feeling is this isn't going away anytime soon and we need to find a way to live with it.”Each country is responding differently to American visitors.“There is a ban on Americans traveling to any of the countries in the Schengen area so that does leave Ireland and Britain open as far as European countries go,” Hannah Oreskovich, a travel influencer and marketing consultant, said.Since COVID-19 started spreading, she hasn’t traveled outside the U.S.“There’s definitely some countries who are taking advantage of those opportunities right now who probably need the tourism,” Oreskovich explained.The airline Emirates is a prime example, recently announcing passengers will receive free COVID-19 insurance. This could include medical expenses and quarantine costs. But countries change their rules about who is allowed in, and who must quarantine upon arrival, depending on case numbers.“Their numbers look good so they loosen things. Their numbers start to go up, they tighten it down,” Bryant said.“Lots of what I’m seeing, you have to test before you go and test when you get there and you're still quarantining maybe,” Sherry Ott, a travel blogger, said. ”They have to have a way to be able to check people in quarantine.” Ott is talking about Ireland, a country allowing Americans in with restrictions. One of those restrictions includes being in self-quarantine for two weeks upon arrival.“They haven't been checking it very much, so it hasn't been really as effective as they would've liked it to be,” said Ott, who has been a travel blogger since 2006. “There is a wide range," said Bryant of international restrictions. "Bahamas recently was going to start letting people in, and then they said, 'We will let you in, but you have to stay in a government-run facility at your own expense. Different countries are doing different things, but it changes all the time.”So, how do you plan a trip if rules change daily?“Get travel insurance that lets you cancel for any reason. Any reason,” Bryant suggested. “This is not the time to shop deals.”Ott said international travel will look different moving forward. “It’s going to be a lot less, a lot more self-guided tours. Maybe less time in big cities, more time in nature. Kind of those same trends that are happening in the U.S.,” Ott said. 3018

The remaining staff is being tested as a precaution.Officials say steps are being taken to prevent further COVID-19 outbreaks, including quarantining residents in their rooms and not allowing outside visitors into the facility.The outbreak at the nursing home is consistent with trends in the area.
