DALIAN: Visiting Japanese lawmakers said on Saturday they were confident that China-Japan relations would develop further, and sport may have something to do with it."Japan and China are partners and our relations are facing good momentum of development and opportunities," Seishiro Eto, a member of the Japanese House of Representatives and former vice-minister of foreign affairs, said.During this visit to China, Eto also wore another hat: that of captain of the Japanese lawmaker soccer team. On Saturday, the team played a friendly soccer match with Chinese lawmakers in the coastal city of Dalian, Liaoning Province.The Chinese team has 35 members with an average age of 45. Most are deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC) including government officials, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers and doctors.Participants from Japan are 23 lawmakers from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, its coalition partner the New Komeito Party, the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan, the Japanese Communist Party and the People's New Party.Both sides said "soccer diplomacy" was aimed at deepening friendship. China has launched a campaign to persuade more women to breast feed, worried that Chinese babies' development lags developed countries because they are not fed properly in their first months of life. The government is also worried about the growing use of powdered baby milk formula -- which many Chinese believe is more "modern" and better for the baby -- especially after 13 babies died of malnutrition in 2004 from being fed fake formula. "Breast milk is a necessary and ideal food for a baby, and the nutrients it contains are the most suitable for the baby's digestion and nourishment," the Health Ministry said on Wednesday in a statement on its Web site (www.moh.gov.cn). "For mothers, breast feeding is beneficial to post-partum recuperation," it added, without saying what the breast-feeding rate was in China. Chinese babies put on less weight in their first six months than babies in developed countries, the ministry said. "The main reason is parents lack scientific knowledge about feeding," it said, adding that problems caused by poor baby nutrition might include mental retardation. There was a particular problem in the countryside, where parents did not know when or how to best start introducing solid food to babies or how to balance their nutritional requirements, the ministry said. The government would spend more time promoting breast feeding and providing information as well as enforcing a ban on baby milk formula being sold or advertised in hospitals, it said. Studies around the world have shown that breast-feeding has many advantages for children including reducing infections, respiratory illnesses and diarrhea. Other studies have shown that babies who are breast-fed for the first six months of life grow better without getting too fat.

KUNMING - A comprehensive research and preservation facility for the germplasm of rare and endangered plants,wild animal species and microorganisms was completed on Sunday in southwest China's Yunnan Province. With an investment of 148 million yuan (US.5 million) over the past two years, the "Southwest China Germplasm Bank of Wild Species" facility was established by the Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB) with the help of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). "The bank will be a key player in China's biotech industry and a pioneer in the nation's biodiversity conservation and bioresource development strategy," Chen Zhu, vice president of CAS, said at the inauguration ceremony. According to the KIB, the bank sees itself as a leading storage facility of Asian species within 15 years of its foundation, and expects to make significant contributions to the development of the biotech industry and life science research by providing valuable resources, information and expertise. Within the next five years, the bank is expected to collect 6,450 wild species, 4,000 of which will be plant seed species. Within 15 years, its collection will reach 19,000 species. The bank comprises a seed section, an in-vitro micro-propagation unit, a microorganism bank, an animal germplasm bank, a DNA bank, an information center and a garden. Stretching across an undulating landscape and climatic zones ranging from the tropical to the frigid, Yunnan is home to a multitude of plant species linked together by a complex network of phylogenetic relations, and accounts for more than 50 percent of China's plant diversity.

BEIJING -- Chinese investors should be suspicious of phone calls, online messages and websites touting highly profitable stocks, the Ministry of Public Security warned on Tuesday. "As China's stock prices are soaring constantly, there has been a rise in the number of cases of illegal activities in the stock market, which has undermined the normal market order and threatened investor security," the ministry said in a notice on its official website. The government has repeatedly warned investors of illegal securities companies that swindle clients of funds with claims of high returns. The ministry said scam artists used Internet and phone calls to illegally tout stocks, funds or stock ownership to investors. The swindlers charged unwary investors high fees for fake stock tips and then quickly disappeared after having collected a huge sum of money. The funds or stock ownership, which were touted online or by phone, were often nonexistent, the ministry said. Investors were also hoodwinked into buying fake "initial offerings" of stocks that were not listed on the exchanges. Other scams include cases in which investors' shares were stolen and sold by criminals, who had stolen investors' account numbers and codes. The ministry urged investors to be alert and not to trust promoters who touted unrealistic high returns, or accept stock tips from unidentified persons online or on the phone. It also urged investors to be aware of computer security and to stop trading immediately when discovering a computer virus. The China Securities Regulatory Commission has pledged to curb illegal trading and fraud in the stock market. In February, the State Council approved the China Securities Regulatory Commission to lead a cross departmental team to crack down on illegal securities business.

SHANGHAI, May 3 (Xinhua) -- The gas supply to about 10,000 households in Shanghai was suspended for eight hours after a gas pipeline was broken by a grab at a construction site on Thursday. No casualty has been reported, according to the municipal government. The accident happened at around 8 a.m. at the crossing of the downtown Caoyang and Shunyi streets. Workers said gas burst out after the grab broke a gas pipeline with a diameter of 300 millimeters. Though they tried to plug the crack with bricks and mud, the leak was out of control till rescuers from the municipal gas supply company arrived. The company cut the gas supply later and fire fighters sprayed water around the pipeline to dilute the gas to avoid explosion. The pipeline was repaired at around 4 p.m. and the supply had resumed by 6 p.m., according to the gas supply company.
