BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday pledged its support for United Nations role of safeguarding world peace and coordinating on international issues.     Chinese President Hu Jintao said in a meeting with visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that the UN shoulders increasingly important responsibilities for promoting world peace and development. China was a firm supporter and important partner of the UN, Hu told Ban, pledging that the country would fully participate in UN work, carry out its due responsibilities and maintain close communication and coordination with the UN.     Hu said China agreed with necessary and rational reform of the UN based on democratic consultation and would continue its cooperation with the UN as well as support for Ban's work in a responsible and constructive manner. China was ready to take an active part.     China fed 22 percent of the world's population using less than nine percent of the world's land. This was a contribution to global food security, Wen said.     Ban praised China's important and constructive contribution to safeguarding world peace and common development, hoping China would play a bigger role. BEIJING, May 21 -- China's tax authority has cut or waived a tax levy, offered a tax refund, and reiterated the tax concession on donations related to the earthquake in Sichuan Province as means of helping to support victims.     Losses suffered by companies and individuals due to the 8.0-magnitude earthquake can be tax deductible, the State Taxation Administration said in a notice on its Website.     As of 6pm yesterday, the number of people killed by the devastating quake has reached 40,075 while 247,645 people have been injured and there were still 32,361 people unaccounted for.     The supplies donated by overseas governments, individuals and companies are exempted from import taxes (including Valued Added Tax and Customs Duties), the tax authority said.     People whose tax-paid autos or ships have been destroyed in the quake can apply for a refund of Vehicles and Vessels Usage Tax for the period from the date they were destroyed until the end of the year. Normally auto and ship tax is prepaid at the beginning of the year. The rules are enforced by the provincial governments for the quake-hit area.     Companies and individuals who donated money to the earthquake area will be partly exempted from taxation, the tax authority reiterated.     Companies on the Chinese mainland have made a combined donation of more than 4.5 billion yuan (US5 million) in cash and goods as of yesterday afternoon, according to Chinese Web portal Sina.com.     Donation, which are within 12 percent of a company's total annual profit, can be claimed as tax deductible expenses, according to China's corporate income tax law. Donations that exceed the amount are not tax deductible.     For individuals, donations that are less than 30 percent of their income, can be tax deductible. The donations must be made through domestic non-commercial social entities or government bodies. Individuals' donations made directly to the quake victims are not tax deductible.

BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- An executive meeting of the State Council (cabinet), presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, on Wednesday decided to launch national comprehensive tests of dairy products and reform the dairy industry.     According to the meeting, the incident involving the tainted Sanlu milk powder reflected chaotic industry conditions, as well as loopholes in the supervision and management of the industry.     It is necessary to learn lessons, properly deal with the incident, improve the inspection and supervision system and strengthen the management of the dairy industry, the meeting said.     The meeting also reached six other decisions and ordered governments at all levels to implement them. It issued an immediate recall of milk formula made before Aug. 6.     Three infants have died so far. There are at least 6,244 infant victims of the contaminated milk powder, of whom 158, or 2.5 percent, have acute kidney failure, the Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.

All affected people in all counties, towns, villages and temporary settlements had been covered.     No concentrated epidemic outbreaks or emergent public health incidents had been reported, according to the meeting.     The 8.0-magnitude earthquake rocked the southwestern Sichuan Province and neighboring regions, including the northwestern Gansu and Shaanxi provinces on May 12. As of Monday noon, it had taken 69,142 lives, injured 374,065 people, left 17,551 missing and 46.25 million affected.     The meeting was also briefed on the quake relief work in Gansu and Shaanxi, which also suffered great losses.     It directed the two provinces to resume production in the affected areas at the earliest date possible and to rehabilitate the infrastructure.     The central government would provide support in policies, capital and material, the meeting said.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) on Saturday said it expects an increase in grain output for the fifth consecutive year.     The country has harvested nearly 80 percent of its autumn crops and expects 2008 to be a bumper year, the ministry stated.     The State Grain Information Center earlier estimated that this year's grain output would reach 511.5 million tons, up 10 million tons from 2007.
