SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving back from a call in Jamul, two HVAC technicians act quickly to help a driver trapped in a smoking car. The accident happened on Campo Road."It looked like the truck got t-boned by a car and flipped on its side," one of the technicians told 10News.For Kyle Hester and Anthony Ramirez, it was a day they will never forget."Working and something crazy happened, you'll never forget it it’ll always be a story to tell," Ramirez said.Dashboard cameras installed in their work truck weeks ago caught the entire incident on camera."It all happened in a matter of seconds," said Ramirez.Hester and Ramirez pulled up to the crash before firefighters and paramedics were there. Hester grabbed the fire extinguisher from the back of their work truck to try to keep the car from catching fire. Ramirez told 10News, "I would consider Kyle a hero." Meanwhile, Hester said he doesn't consider himself a hero, just a person doing the right thing."I think there were other heroes there that day helping out," said Hester.10News has learned both drivers from the crash were able to get out of their vehicles safely. 1132

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Governor Gavin Newsom said Friday that more than 670,000 doses of the new Moderna vaccine could be in the state as early as next week. Unlike the first Pfizer vaccine, it does not require ultra-low temperature freezers, so experts predict the rollout logistics will be much smoother. While the new vaccine is promising, the fight against the surge continues.The FDA's Emergency Use Authorization of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine could not have come at a more dire time."[There has been a] 58% increase over the last 14 days, now over 3400 Californians [are] in our ICU's," Governor Gavin Newsom said in a social media COVID-19 update Friday.As more people get sick after Thanksgiving gatherings, space, staff, and resources in our hospital systems are dwindling. San Diego County's ICU capacity is now at 19%, while the Southern California region is 0%."When you see 0%, that doesn't mean there's no capacity, no one's allowed into an ICU," the Governor explained. "It means we are now in our surge phase, which is about 20% additional capacity that we can make available."Hospitals are now repurposing regular beds into ICU beds, postponing non-essential procedures, and moving around staff to accommodate the surge."We are still going to have accidents, unfortunately," Dr. Abisola Olulade with Sharp Rees Stealy said. "Someone may have the need for emergency surgery. All of these things don't go away just because we are in the middle of a pandemic."Dr. Olulade says while the Moderna vaccine rollout will undoubtedly help slow the surge, it is not the end-all-be-all."The vaccine is not going to help someone that is in the ICU now," Dr. Olulade explained. "It's really possibly not going to help for the next few months. It does take a while before you achieve herd immunity or when enough people have gotten the vaccine, and that could be several months."That is why, in the meantime, she believes it is vital that we continue to do our part in protecting ourselves and others."If past events are predictors of the future, then we can see that the upcoming holidays are a very risky time because we tend to see these numbers go up drastically after holiday celebrations," Dr. Olulade said. "This is just the end of the beginning of the pandemic. The vaccine is not going to bring this to a quick end. We are still going to have to wear masks, [and] we are still going to have to distance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters were able to extinguish a brush fire they believe was sparked by an unknown group in City Heights Wednesday. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, the blaze started in a canyon on the 3200 block of 42nd Street around 1:30 p.m.Crews were quickly able to stop the fire’s forward rate of spread while firefighters remained on scene to ensure there were no hot spots. No one was injured and no structures damaged, but the blaze did scorch an acre of land. Video sent to 10News shows residents in the area spraying water throughout their yards as flames crept up the nearby canyon. The metro arson strike team ruled the fire arson after witnesses said "juveniles were seen in the canyon before the fire started." 746

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Due to the pandemic, high school sports are officially on hold until January at the earliest. But while frustration is setting in, CIF is doing everything it can to get the kids back on the field. There's nothing like high school football and the sights and sounds of Friday Night Lights, or a slam dunk on the basketball court. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, it's wait-and-see for every high school athlete."I think it's very disappointing. Are kids, are families, are schools and communities have been waiting quite a long time and it's been tough," says San Diego Section CIF Commissioner Joe Heinz.There was hope of a December start, but as COVID-19 surged, it was negated by the California Department of Public Health. "It's definitely a fine balance across the nation as different things are happening," Heinz said. "I know our executive director is talking on a regular basis with the California Department of Health and with the governor's office."So for the time being, players, coaches, schools, and everybody else associated with high school athletics must be patient. It has everyone frustrated."You can't blame them. I think we are all frustrated. It's been a long time coming, and when you see other things going on in other states, which has been successful," said Heinz.Now, if the OK is given next month, Heinz says they will have a plan in place. However, there is no guarantee all sports can be played. "Obviously we could get to some point where we just don't have enough time to get a season in. There is no way to compact all of our sports into one season. We're just waiting for that opportunity to put a plan in place. We are just waiting for the word from the state," Heinz said. 1737
