DUNCAN, Okla. -- Rural hospitals faced unique challenges preparing for a rush of COVID-19 patients. From financial struggles to attaining PPE, smaller facilities did everything they could to get ready.One regional hospital in Oklahoma has waited for months for coronavirus cases to flood their emergency room, but that wave of patients is just now starting to trickle in.“We saw cases increasing, but as of now, it hasn’t come to Duncan quite like we expected,” said Dr. Michael Hemphill, a pulmonary and critical care physician and Duncan Regional’s Director of the ICU.As coronavirus cases overload emergency rooms across the country, this rural hospital—one of few medical centers in Southern Oklahoma—has only seen a handful of cases. After the holiday weekend, their facility is starting to see cases increase.As they wait for the surge, the fear of what would happen if beds or supplies ran out looms over the staff.“The most difficult thing is, there’s not a lot of backup,” said Hemphill. “I’m the only pulmonogist in Duncan,” he said.So, the hospital gathered as much personal protective equipment as possible—preparing for the worst.Chief Nursing Officer Kristen Webb said it’s been tougher to get critical supplies as a smaller hospital.“The last time we were able to receive N95’s was probably in December,” said Webb. She said they needed them again come February, but were never able to fill any of the orders they placed.When she was able to find supplies, she spent every penny she could to make sure staff would be safe.“We probably spent close to a million dollars on equipment, PPE, or other supplies and equipment towards a pandemic that we didn’t fully realize at this point,” said Webb.That massive expense was made tougher because the hospital had to cancel all elective procedures and appointments.“We spent quite a bit of money at a time where we weren’t bringing in our normal resources,” said Webb.“Rural hospitals are especially financially strained, especially here in Oklahoma, so when everything shut down…our elective procedures shut down. So, there is a financial burden the hospital had to bear,” said Dr. Hemphill.The burden extends past these walls to Jefferson County Hospital. Duncan Regional helps the critical access hospital stay open. It’s a facility with only 18 beds that was on the verge of shutting down just a couple years ago.But if the pandemic hits, that critical access facility and Duncan Regional are the places people will turn to. So it’s necessary these facilities maintain enough revenue to stay open so communities have access to care. 2601

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- A metal recycling facility in El Cajon burst into flames Wednesday afternoon, sending thick, black smoke into the air.The fire erupted at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Bradley Avenue near In-N-Out Burger.In total, 20 firefighters from Santee Heartland and San Miguel responded to the blaze. Firefighters said they had to use breathing tanks because they didn't want to come into contact with the heavy smoke.The official cause of the fire hasn’t been confirmed, but crews received reports that the fire started in the car crusher then spread to nearby recycled materials. "Oh it stinks really bad. I took hazmat training. Any time they are burning stuff like that stay upwind and don't smell that stuff,” said Larry Sutton, a worker in the area.Crews used an aerial water stream to send 1,000 gallons of water per minute onto the large fire. "We had one in July, fire prevention bureau working with the business to make ensure materials are stored properly and measures are safe,” said Justin Fuller with the San Miguel Fire Department.Crews also consulted with a hazmat team due to the nature of the fire. Officials said they are working to try and control runoff from the fire which may contain hydraulic fluid from the car-crushing device. 1287

El Cajon Police continue to search for a wanted suspect while an officer recovers from being dragged down a road by a car. The suspect has been identified as 41-year-old David Pangilinan of Guam. He’s a school mate of mine back in elementary and middle school,” said Troy Torres. “Mr. Pangilinan’s family is very well known, a very nice family that has built up businesses a lot over the years, has contributed a lot to the community so his name does stand out,” he said, saying most people on the small island have heard of the family so this news has sparked attention across the island.A press release from El Cajon police said Pangilinan is the suspect in a case that started when an officer stopped to check on an SUV parked illegally and blocking traffic on Washington Avenue in El Cajon. He found a sleeping man and woman inside the car that was later determined to be a rental.The male driver of the car first tried to give false identification then started to put it into gear, so the officer tried to stop him. The officer got trapped in the car and was dragged down the road, then hit by another car. The SUV drove away and was deserted nearby, with the man and woman nowhere to be found. They are still on the loose and El Cajon police are asking for the public to report any information on their whereabouts.The officer is in critical condition as of Monday.A police officer in Guam said they’re on high alert and would know if he tried to return to the island because everyone who lands at the airport in Guam is required to go to a mandatory quarantine facility for six days. (KGTV) – Two people died after being struck by an oncoming vehicle along I-8 Sunday morning.According to the California Highway Patrol, a single vehicle was involved in a crash on I-8 near El Cajon, California just before 1:30 a.m.Following the crash two good Samaritans stopped to help the man out of his vehicle.While the crash victim and one of the good Samaritans were talking on the side of the road, another vehicle failed to see both victims and struck them, according to CHP.Authorities say the investigation is ongoing but haven’t ruled out drugs or alcohol being factors in the crash. 624
