COPENHAGEN, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said on Tuesday that China, a developing country, has taken important measures in reducing its emission of greenhouse gas.     "China has also taken quite important measures by cutting forty to forty-five percent of energy intensity by 2020," Ban said at a press conference on the sidelines of the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen.     Ban arrived here earlier on Tuesday to open a high-level segment of the conference, which entered its ninth day of negotiations on a new global deal to push forward the fight against climate change.     The UN chief said he was fully aware of particular challenges faced by developing countries, in particular poor countries, calling on rich countries to improve their commitments in climate financing.     The climate change negotiations were now in a critical but difficult situation as developed countries and developing countries remain divided on key issues, including climate financing.     Developed countries have been reluctant to provide financial support to help developing countries mitigate and adapt to climate change. So far, they only indicated to give 10 billion U.S. dollars annually in the three years between 2010 and 2012.     Ban said developed countries should go beyond the fast-start support and also address medium and long-term financing scaled up to needs.     "I have been urging that developed countries should begin discussing the medium and long term financial support packages," he said, calling on all countries to overcome national interests or interests of any particular groups.     "That would be one of the keys in bridging the gap between developed and developing countries," he added.     Speaking at the same press conference, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he was encouraged by China's move to set national targets of reducing greenhouse gas emission.     "I am very encouraged by the fact that China has proposed, at this stage, nationally binding targets for mitigation which deviates from business as usual," he said.     But he added China should translate those national targets into some kind of international language.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday China and the United States should make joint efforts to push forward cooperation on clean energy and climate change in a substantial way.     Wen said such cooperation is important work and in the interests of both countries and the world. He said the two countries should advance cooperation in this area to bring benefit to the human beings and future generations.     Wen made the remarks when meeting with participants of the Strategic Forum for U.S.-China Clean Energy Cooperation that began in Beijing Wednesday. The forum will last to Friday.     The forum was co-sponsored by the Chinese think tank China Institute of Strategy and Management and the Brookings Institution of the United States. Participants include Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and high-ranking officials from both governments. China's Prime Minister Wen Jiabao(R2) talks with the US delegation of Forum on Strategic China-US Clean Energy Co-operation led by former US vice President Albert Gore(L2) in Beijing, Oct. 21, 2009U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu will deliver video-taped address at the meeting Thursday.     Wen said since China and the United States are both major energy producers and consumers, the two countries share common interests in developing clean energy and addressing climate changes. He said bilateral cooperation in this area has strategic significance and broad prospect.     Wen said the two sides should earnestly implement the agreement on the 10-year energy and environment cooperation framework they signed in June, 2008.     He called for the governments, enterprises and researching institutes of both countries to join effort for this end.     Wen said energy efficiency and environment protection are both a basic strategy of China to achieve sustainable economic and social development and a major measure to cope with climate changes.     The American guests made positive comments on the efforts that China has made in developing clean energy and addressing climate changes.     They expressed the wish that the two countries should set up common targets and carry out constructive, practical cooperation in this respect.

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature ended its five-day bimonthly session Saturday, approving tort liability and island protection laws and an amendment to the renewable energy law.     Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), told the closing meeting that the Tort Law was significant in "protecting civil rights and people's interests, preventing and punishing infringement acts, reducing conflicts and promoting social harmony and stability."     The top legislator said the amendment to the renewable energy law would "greatly promote a healthy and rapid development of the renewable energy sector and adjust energy structure to strengthen the building of an environment-friendly and resource-saving society."     The island protection law would play a key role in protecting islands' eco-system, rationally utilizing natural resources and safeguarding the country's marine rights, Wu said.     The session also examined two reports from the State Council on employment and boosting development of small and medium-sized enterprises.     It also voted to ratify a United Nations protocol to combat human trafficking -- the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, supplementing the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.     The session also approved a pact on criminal judicial assistance between China and Malta.     It voted to appoint Han Changfu, former governor of northeastern Jilin Province, as agricultural minister.     The meeting also decided to open the annual plenary session of the NPC on March 5 next year. Wu Bangguo(C), chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, the country's top legislature, addresses the 12th session of the 11th NPC Standing Committee in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 26, 2009.

BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said Wednesday the country regards Egypt as one of the most important strategic cooperative partners among Arabian and African nations.     "We attach great importance to the relations with Egypt," Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, told visiting Deputy Speaker of Egyptian People's Assembly Zeinab Radwan. To promote relations between China and Egypt, both influential countries in the world, conformed to the fundamental interests of the two nations and the two peoples, and was also conducive to regional and world peace and prosperity, Wu said. Wu Bangguo (R), chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), shakes hands with visiting Deputy Speaker of Egyptian People's Assembly Zeinab Radwan in Beijing, Dec. 9, 2009.    "We are ready to work with Egypt to maintain high-level exchanges, increase friendly cooperation and strengthen coordination in international affairs," Wu said, noting that this would help achieve common development and benefit the two peoples.     Wu also applauded Egypt's long-term and firm support to China on issues concerning Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.     Radwan was here to attend the third meeting under a regular exchange mechanism between the parliaments of China and Egypt.     Hailing the role of the regular exchange mechanism, Wu said it provided the two parliaments with direct, in-depth and effective channels to communicate with each other, and had become an important platform for parliamentary exchanges.     Under the active promotion of the leaders from both nations, the two parliaments set up the regular exchange mechanism in 2007.     Wu hoped the two parliaments would further improve the mechanism.     Echoing Wu, Radwan said the Egyptian People's Assembly would make use of the mechanism construction to advance the level of parliamentary cooperation between the two sides.     As to Egypt-China ties, Radwan said the two countries in recent years had witnessed frequent high-level visits and fruitful cooperation in investment, tourism, economy and trade.     Egypt valued the relations with China, and would work with the country to enhance exchanges and cooperation in various sectors.     Radwan is visiting China from Dec. 4 to 10 at the invitation of the NPC Standing Committee.
