An Ohio state Senator used the term "colored people" and asked if the coronavirus pandemic is disproportionately affecting black people because they "do not wash their hands as well as other groups" during a public hearing earlier this week.State Sen. Steve Huffman, R-Tipp City, who represents portions of Dayton, made the comments on Tuesday during a hearing about declaring racism as a "public health crisis.""My point is I understand African Americans have a higher incidence of chronic conditions, and it makes them more susceptible to death from COVID," Huffman said, according to The Dayton Daily News. "But why it doesn't make them more susceptible to just get COVID? Could it just be that African Americans or the colored population do not wash their hands as well as other groups or wear a mask or do not socially distance themselves? That could be the explanation of the higher incidence?"Huffman later issued a statement about his comments, calling them regrettable."Regrettably, I asked a question in an unintentionally awkward way that was perceived as hurtful and was exactly the opposite of what I meant," Huffman said. "I was trying to focus on why COVID-19 affects people of color at a higher rate since we really do not know all the reasons."In response to Huffman's comments, the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus issued a statement calling on all 132 members of the Ohio General Assembly and their staffs to take racial equity and implicit bias training."It is just unbelievable he would ask that kind of question or use that kind of terminology," said Ohio NAACP President Tom Roberts, who used to represent Huffman's district.According to the bio on his state senator page, Huffman has a medical degree and is a practicing physician.The CDC says there are several reasons why African Americans are disproportionately contracting the virus. Black people are more likely to live in cities and multi-generational households, which increases the risk of spread. Black people are also more likely to be employed as essential workers and less likely to be offered paid sick leave. An 11-year-old elephant died at Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona on Tuesday.Punga, a male, died due to double mesenteric root torsion, also known as twisted gut.The condition is known to occur suddenly and is usually deadly. According to Reid Park Zoo veterinarian Alexis Moreno, torsions are more common in horses than in elephants. An explosion leveled a home in Cleveland on Monday, and just one day after losing everything, strangers are helping themselves to the homeowner's belongings left behind. One man loaded up his truck with an oven. Another grabbed a table and chairs. Cleveland police said because it is not a crime scene, they will only respond to calls about looting.And to add insult to injury, the city has hit the homeowner, Nita Moore, with a laundry list of citations. Just after the explosion happened, one 45-year-old woman was taken from the explosion site in the 11000 block of Primrose Avenue to MetroHealth in critical condition. Anyone driving on Interstate 15 near Spring Mountain Road near the Las Vegas Strip early this morning may have seen a shocking billboard. It said “Shoot A School Kid Only .”The infamous art collective INDECLINE “vandalized” the sign on Wednesday night. The billboard is used by Battlefield Vegas, which advertises that it is the best indoor shooting range experience in Las Vegas. The sign was also changed to say "DEFEND LIVES REFORM LAWS."INDECLINE says they did it because of “America’s longstanding obsession with gun culture and out government’s inability to honor the victims of mass shootings by distancing themselves from the homicidal policies of the NRA.”INDECLINE says it is "calling on all political parties to immediately work towards a legislative resolution that aims to protect citizens and reform inadequate gun las that are currently placing value on assault weapons over that of human life.”This isn’t the first time that INDECLINE has vandalized a billboard or did something controversial in Las Vegas and other cities around the U.S.INDECLINE was also behind the naked Donald Trump statues in 2016 that popped up in many cities, including Las Vegas, New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In addition, the group vandalized a billboard that was promoting a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor. They also hung mannequins in suits on billboards with the caption “Dying For Work.” The message on the billboard was covered up before 9 a.m. Thursday. An Arizona family is celebrating a major milestone. Baby Henley was born with a congenital heart defect or a hole in her heart. Weighing in at only 4 pounds and 7 ounces, there was a lot of concern about her health because she just would not eat."Because of the hole in her heart, she just could not eat, it was too difficult for her, so she struggled a lot to gain weight," said Megan Beebe, Henley's mother.So, from the age of 5 months old, Henley has relied on a feeding tube to get all of her nutrition."At one point, it was giving her 100% of her nutrition. We would put all of her formula, breast milk through the feeding tube," said Beebe.In her two years since she was born, Henley has had hundreds of doctor's appointments and five surgeries. She has also been working with a feeding therapist based out of the United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arizona. Henley does not have cerebral palsy, but her mother tells KNXV they really liked the specialized therapist they have been working with, so they have stuck with the organization."We just had to keep working our way up, until one day she ate an entire Cheeto Puff all by herself," said Beebe.That one Cheeto Puff was a big milestone for Henley."It took her about 10 full minutes to eat one Cheeto Puff but she ate the whole Cheeto Puff all by herself, did not throw up," said Beebe, talking about the relief they felt. They were finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel of Henley's tough road to being able to eat without the aid of a feeding tube.After 27 months, Henley's feeding tube was finally removed. It was a big moment for Beebe. She tells KNXV she sometimes could not help but feel like a failure as a mother."Our number one job is to feed her and keep her alive, and we couldn't do that," said Beebe."The day we finally got to take her feeding tube out, it was like, it was just a miracle.
