President Donald Trump once again promoted hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 treatment despite a number of trials disputing its efficacy.Questions on Trump’s support of the largely unproven drug comes as Trump retweeted a video that called the drug a “cure” for the coronavirus. Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have since pulled the video from their platforms.The video also caused Twitter to suspend the account of Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr.Major public health organizations have disputed the efficacy of the drug. Early results of the drug’s usage in peer reviewed trials have not been promising, according to the FDA. The FDA has banned the use of the drug to treat coronavirus outside of hospital and clinical trial settings. But Trump continues to place hopes in hydroxychloroquine.“I happen to believe in it. I would take it,” Trump said on Tuesday. “As you know, I took it for a 14-day period, and I'm here. Right? I'm here. I happen to think it's -- it works in the early stages.”Recently, the White House began promoting a study by the Henry Ford Health System, which did indicate that the drug reduced mortality. But a number of other studies have not been able to replicate Henry Ford Health System's findings. Most recently, the New England Journal of Medicine published last week a study that indicated that the drug did not improve coronavirus outcomes. But the FDA has said that the drug carries dangerous side effects, and several initial studies indicated that the drug is not an effective treatment for COVID-19. In June, the FDA withdrew an emergency use authorization of the drug. An EUA allowed doctors to use treatments by weighing potential benefits over potential risks.“We made this determination based on recent results from a large, randomized clinical trial in hospitalized patients that found these medicines showed no benefit for decreasing the likelihood of death or speeding recovery,” the FDA said. “This outcome was consistent with other new data, including those showing the suggested dosing for these medicines are unlikely to kill or inhibit the virus that causes COVID-19.”In April, the FDA first put out guidance that warned against the use of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine for COVID-19 outside of the hospital setting or a clinical trial due to possible side effects. The FDA added that hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine had not been shown to be safe and effective for treating or preventing COVID-19.The FDA said that hydroxychloroquine can cause abnormal heart rhythms, and patients who also have other health issues such as heart and kidney disease are likely to be at increased risk of complications.Hydroxychloroquine, a treatment that is commonly used to treat malaria and lupus, can be provided as a treatment for COVID-19 patients on an experimental basis. 2820

(KGTV) - A couple was on their way to the hospital to give birth, but their baby decided to make his grand entrance before they could get there.Bill Sudzuk's wife, Holly Hill, was not expected to give birth to their third child until next week. But early Thursday morning, she began having contractions.As they drove to the hospital at around 2:30 a.m., Sudzuk realized that the baby was not going to wait as they were still a few minutes away from the delivery room."Baby wanted to come out, nothing we could do about it," Sudzuk said.Because of the contractions, the couple pulled over in the parking lot of a Chevron gas station on Scripps Poway Parkway and Pomerado Road, and Sudzuk called 911 for assistance.While on the phone, paramedics guided Sudzuk through the process of helping deliver the baby. Seconds later, Sudzuk caught Simon with his free hand. "Three minutes later, we have a little one!" Hill said.Next thing he knew, Sudzuk was handling the umbilical cord with a bungee."I went and found a string, and I ended up cutting a bungee off my backpack and cutting and tying it off," Sudzuk said. Paramedics arrived to check on mom and baby before putting them in an ambulance and taking them to the hospital.Doctors said they are lucky they had no complications. Simon, who is now nicknamed "Chevron" is a happy, healthy baby boy. Despite their crazy day, the family is in good spirits. Emily Powell is a third-generation owner of the iconic independent bookstore.“I think the reason we’re so big and so noteworthy 50 years into our history is really the mix of new and used inventory on the shelf together," Powell said. "Very few folks do that in any industry. Certainly, it was unusual in the book industry at the time, and it’s still somewhat unusual still to this day.”Book lovers travel from all over to explore the so-called "City of Books," thrifting for old books with new ideas.“This is one of my favorite books,” Powell said.It could be a rare book, a timely book, or a book you’ve never heard of before.“It really resonates whether you’re a book lover or just someone with an interest in anything. You just have to find your corner of the store and dive deep into that section.”Powell’s is the world’s largest independent bookstore. The owners recently decided to pull their books from Amazon’s virtual shelves. Some say the world’s largest online marketplace has become a threat to local bookstore culture.“They extract a commission but they also ask for certain customer-service treatment and ways of behaving that are not how we would ordinarily run our business,” Powell said.Powell says business with Amazon became more and more costly, and with the pandemic, she says they needed to find a way forward that is sustainable for Powell’s and the community.“We need to be a part of an ecosystem that’s healthy and vital, and so we have to be part of building that ecosystem and hence the choice to cut off our Amazon business,” Powell said.Powell’s isn’t the only independent retailer struggling to compete with a company offering anything and everything at a cheap price with quick and free shipping. Powell’s has been turning to its e-commerce site during the pandemic as online sales have become essential, but not every local bookstore can afford to have its own book-sale website.“Bookshop is an online bookstore that supports local mom-and-pop, brick-and-mortar independent bookstores,” Bookshop founder Andy Hunter said.Andy Hunter started Bookshop in January. It’s a free way for bookstores to create an online shop to sell to its customers.“They can just go to our website, scroll down to the footer, there will be a ‘become an affiliate’ link and then they can onboard and they can create a shop in under an hour," Hunter said. "Really maybe half an hour. It’s as easy as setting up a Facebook page.”We reached out to Amazon for comment on this book-selling trend, but have yet to hear back. Hunter says Bookshop has already captured nearly 2% of Amazon’s market share for books. He’s hoping that percentage will continue to rise.“If we lose independent bookstores, the importance of books in our culture will be diminished,” Hunter said.Powell says spending money at a local bookstore instead of Amazon keeps the dollars in the community. She says choosing to stop sales through Amazon was a difficult decision, but a necessary one."We’ve contemplated it for years because we know that staying with Amazon was not the best choice for our business, but it’s very hard to give up sales that you really need to keep surviving one way or another,” Powell said.Her hope for Powell’s Books is that they can connect people to the value of reading while continuing to evolve with the changes of the future.“We’re so accustomed in our modern age to the idea that the computer is the best way to find anything, but in fact, it’s very difficult to replicate the in-person experience of a bookstore,” Powell said.She says certain books will always stay relevant. 3820

President Donald Trump has announced he's rolling back an influential environmental law from the Nixon-era that he says delays infrastructure projects. When he first announced the effort in January, the administration set a two-year deadline for completing full environmental impact reviews while less comprehensive assessments would have to be completed within one year. The White House said the final rule will promote the rebuilding of America.Critics call the president’s efforts a cynical attempt to limit the public’s ability to review, comment and influence proposed projects under the National Environmental Policy Act, one of the country’s bedrock environmental protection laws.Trump made the announcement at a UPS facility in Atlanta. The changes deal with regulations for how and when authorities must conduct environmental reviews. The goal is to make it easier to build highways, pipelines, chemical plants and other projects. While in Atlanta, Trump said that “we’re reclaiming America’s proud heritage as a nation of builders and a nation that can get things done.”Georgia is emerging as a key swing state in the general election. Trump won the Republican-leaning state by 5 percentage points in 2016, but some polls show him trailing former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee.
