BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security is considering a permanent number for Hong Kong and Macao residents' mainland entry cards for convenience.Currently, the last two of the 11 digits indicate the frequency for card renewals, meaning the number changes when Hong Kong and Macao residents get their cards renewed. That has been an inconvenience for those investing, buying housing, and doing banking business on the mainland.According to a statement released Friday by the ministry, Hong Kong and Macao residents entered a peak period for mainland card renewals last year.Cards for those aged 18 and above are valid for ten years. Cards for those under 18 years last three years.The mainland entry cards began to be used on Jan. 15, 1999.

BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhua) -- The cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) would be open to opinions of business people on both sides before formal negotiations on details, a political advisory body spokesman said here Tuesday.Zhao Qizheng, spokesman of the annual session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks at a press conference of the top political advisory body's annual full session, which will open Wednesday.Zhao also said CPPCC members attending the session would call for "more generous" concessions from the mainland in the ECFA since Premier Wen Jiabao had pledged to make concessions."The reason is very simple -- Taiwan compatriots are our brothers," Wen said Saturday in an online chat with Internet users.Formal negotiations of the pact would be held at the fifth round of talks between the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and the island' s Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), two organizations authorized to handle cross-Strait issues.The basic content of the agreement would cover major economic activities across the Strait, including market access for commodity trade and service trade, rules of origin, early harvest program, trade remedy, dispute settlement, investment and economic cooperation.

BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's Education Ministry on Sunday warned students considering studying overseas against Australian schools run by the GEOS group after more than 40 Chinese students were left stranded with the group's collapse.More than 2,300 students in GEOS group schools across Australia were affected after the college closures. The schools were scattered across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Cairns.GEOS is a Japanese company which owns hundreds of colleges around the world. The GEOS group has run out of money for its Australian colleges,according to Australian media reports.Chinese embassies and consulates in Australia are negotiating with local authorities to settle the issue to safeguard students' legitimate rights.The Education Ministry has drawn up a recommendation list of nearly 15,000 schools in 33 countries worldwide on its website. The recommended schools are relatively trustworthy and reliable.Australia has been a preferred destination for overseas education for Indian and Chinese students.The Australian Bureau of Statistics said the number of Chinese student enrollments was 146,000 by June 2009, up an average annual 16 percent over the past six years.

BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's operational high-speed railways have exceeded 3,300 kilometers, leading the world in both length and technologies, the Ministry of Railways said on its official website Thursday.Last year China finished two high-speed railways between Wuhan-Guangzhou and Zhengzhou-Xi'an, with an operating speed of 350 km/h. Before that, China had built high-speed railways between some of its major cities, including Beijing-Tianjin, Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan, Qingdao-Jinan, Hefei-Wuhan and Hefei-Nanjing.A number of new high-speed railways are being built and will be finished in the coming few years, of which the Beijing-Shanghai line has a length of 1,318 km and a designed travel speed of 350 km/h. Construction of the line started in April 2008 and would finish in around five years. It would cut travel times between the two cities to only five hours from about 12 hours.High-speed trains wait for departure at Guangzhou south railway station in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, on Jan. 30, 2010.
