SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors renewed their concerns over jets rattling their neighborhood less than a week before the F-35 arrives at Marine Corps. Air Station Miramar.The same concerns from University City neighbors voiced in letters to Miramar date back to at least 2012, according to MCAS Miramar Director of Communications Capt. He pointed to a gray square and said that entire area over the base up to 10,000 feet is controlled by the Federal Aviation Administration.Right off the end of the flight deck sits University City, where tragedy struck more than a decade ago. An F/A-18 crashed after having engine trouble, killing four and destroying two homes.With the F-35 coming to MCAS Miramar next week, neighbors are concerned the single-engine jet poses a higher risk.Capt. Gregory says the aircraft is arguably safer, "it is much easier to diagnose any issues and fix those issues."Neighbors are also concerned where the F-35 will fly, "the goal is to have flights as much as possible follow the approved flight paths," San Diego Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry said.She was referencing a map with different colored flight paths. The Marine Corps. stated that map is from 2005, and shows average flight paths based on 5,000 annual operations. They said the map is disproportional and it is solely meant to illustrate the average flight paths for land developers.That came as news to Bry, "I don't think the community understands that. They understand that these are the flight paths they will take."When it comes to noise, "the Navy and Marine Corps have been flying F-18s here in San Diego for the past 30-35 years, so it's going to be very noticeable when the F-35s get here and start taking off," Capt. Gregory said.He added the Navy flew more jets when they ran the base.Overall, the F-35s are expected to make the area slightly quieter.Neighbors are having a meeting later this month, where a representative from Bry's office as well as MCAS Miramar will be present. 2130

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Poway Unified School District has approved a plan for some students to return to in-person classes starting as soon as this month.The district's board on Thursday approved a phased reopening plan for elementary schools starting on Oct. 1, with the first group of schools opening with an AM/PM schedule.Abraxas High School will reopen with an A/B schedule on Oct. 8, and PUSD's remaining elementary schools will reopen with an AM/PM schedule on Oct. 12, according to the district.The board also approved resuming on-campus special education services and in-person instruction for small groups after Sept. 24.RELATED: San Diego County schools allowed to reopen for in-person learningAll students, from preschool through 12th grade, will be required to wear a mask when returning to campus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 100 migrants detained in Texas were flown to San Diego's Lindbergh Field Friday for processing due to a backlog in the Rio Grande Valley sector, U.S. Border Patrol officials said. “Currently, ICE aircraft are providing flights from RGV Sector to Del Rio and San Diego Sectors. We are also transporting individuals from Yuma Sector to El Centro Sector and from the Rio Grande Valley Sector to the Laredo Sector by bus. These are additional steps DHS is taking to mitigate the challenges posed by the unprecedented number of people in CBP custody,” said Theron Francisco, Acting Supervisory Border Patrol Agent. Once in San Diego, the migrants were transported from the airport to the Border Patrol’s Brown Field Station in the South Bay. According to acting San Diego Border Patrol Chief Doug Harrison, the migrants will go through general processing and screening, with the hopes of adhering to the national 20-day detention rule. The detention rule states migrant families cannot be held in detention for more than 20 days. After the initial screening at the border station, Immigration and Customs Enforcement will take over processing. Prior to the Texas-to-San Diego transfer, the selected migrants -- most of them being families -- went through health screenings to determine if they were healthy enough for travel. Harrison said there will be three flights per week, with the planes being ICE-contracted commercial charter flights. Harrison added the Rio Grande Valley facility is 200 percent over capacity, making the transfer of migrants to San Diego necessary. “We got to give the people in Rio Grande Valley some relief,” he said. In addition to San Diego, Harrison said it’s possible that migrants from Texas could be transferred to border stations in Detroit, Buffalo and Miami. According to police, 77-year-old Mario Aello left The Shores Post-Acute senior living facility around 4:45 p.m. Saturday. Aello reportedly told another patient he had plans to leave the facility to visit his sister in Sonora, Mexico. Aello suffers from short-term dementia and type two diabetes, police say. Aello is described as five feet, seven inches tall with brown hair. He was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt, a black and gray jacket, blue shorts and brown shoes. 610

A lot of time, energy and love into this piece," said Heather Johnson.At 30th and Juniper Street and 30th Street, the community mural sponsored by several neighborhood businesses was targeted by a vandal over the weekend."I think it's disgusting to be honest with you," said Brian Padgett.The phrase "#Neighborhood" was spray-painted over, replaced with the phrase "ETHNIC CLEANSING." At the bottom of the mural, the phrase "#Hipster Pacifism" was tagged in purple."Disheartening, frustrating and an act of cowardice," added Ezekiel Morphis.Neighbors believe the spray-painted messages are sounding off against the gentrification of South Park. The tagged wall is a part of a building which will soon be home to a non-profit restaurant benefiting local schools. It was once home to long-time coffeehouse priced out of the area almost two years ago."It happens in every neighborhood. As a city grows, there is change. This is not the way to handle it," said Johnson.Some paint was quickly put on the tagging, but the creators of the mural — which cost about ,000 — say it may cost another ,000 to repair.
