SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The USS Midway Museum is celebrating 15 years in San Diego with a ticket discount offer for area residents. The deal announced Tuesday is rolling back admission to 2004 prices during the month of September. Tickets are for adults and seniors, and for youth and students. “Midway would not be the 5th most-popular American museum of any type (35,000 museums) if it were not for the nearly 800 San Diegans who donate more than 275,000 hours annually,” said founding president and CEO Mac McLaughlin. “They are the rock stars of Midway and the foundation of its success.” September marks the 74th anniversary of the USS Midway’s commissioning. The retired aircraft carrier opened as a museum in June 2004 after a 12-year campaign. The ship has been host to special events including an SDSU basketball game, an NFL pregame show, and episodes of The Bachelor and American Idol. The Midway is the most-visited ship museum in the world and the top-rated San Diego activity according to TripAdvisor, the museum reports. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The only child to live through the Paradise Hills murder-suicide, died Saturday, relatives told 10News. Nine-year-old Ezequiel Valdivia passed at 11:23 Saturday night at Rady Children's Hospital after his family made the difficult decision to pull the plug."He's probably been gone from us for a while," said Karl Albright, Rosario's brother-in-law. "We were just using the machines to keep his body with us. But he has been upstairs with his family, watching us."Ezequiel's father, Jose Valdivia, also shot and killed his sons, Enzi, 3, Zuriel, 5, and Zeth, 11, and their 29-year-old mother, Sabrina Rosario. Valdivia then turned the gun on himself.The muder-suicide happened on Saturday, November 16 at the family's home on Flintridge Drive in Paradise Hills.The Paradise Hills community and the Twin Hills Little League came together to host this month's "Cruise Reo Car Show" as a fundraiser to help the family."The whole community of Paradise Hills came out today, and the Twin Hills Little League. They are our family forever," Vanessa Pash said. She, like Sabrina Rosario, is a Twin Hills Little League mom. Albright said Baby Enzi was the shy one, Zuriel was playful. Ezequiel was the athlete and Zeth was a sensitive sweetheart. All of them poured their love for baseball into the Twin Hills Little League."The little one was only three, and he wasn't old enough to play, but the coaches would let him go out there and practice, and make him feel like he was part of the team," Pash said. To honor the three players, the league decided to retire each child's jersey number. They also agreed to play in the boys' honor for all future games. Albright says he is overwhelmed with what the community continues to do for their family. "It's amazing how many people are coming together to do all of these things for complete strangers," Albright said. The family is now in the process of donating Ezequiel's organs. The boys and their mother will be buried together. "There's no pain, there's no suffering, no anguish, no anxiety. There's nothing. Pure peace," Albright said. Officers received another call en route to the home from a neighbor who said they heard arguing and what they believed to be a "nail gun firing." Three of the boys were found dead in the home. Ezequiel survived for one week, but was taken off life support November 23 after the doctors said he was brain dead, according to Rosario’s brother-in-law. The boys lived in the home with their mother and other relatives, but not Valdivia, who was in the process of divorcing Rosario. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego County Office of Education is bringing solutions to families without internet access to start the school year.The “digital divide” was already in place before the pandemic. With an increased reliance on distance learning and working from home, it’s only gotten worse.Before coronavirus, 1 in 5 students in San Diego County were under-connected or not connected at all.Chief Technology Officer, Terry Loftus, with the County Office of Education is working to help fix that.“If the parent had an Android phone, that qualifies as connectivity, but it’s not broadband and it doesn’t meet the needs of distance learning,” said Loftus.The COE is stepping up to the challenge of bridging the digital divide that plagued about 100,000 families.“Approximately 36,000 of those were South and East county,” said Loftus. “Or our districts that have people on the Free and Reduced Meal Program and haven’t had access in the past.”Many families can’t afford cable or wireless connections, or were forced to cut the cord after losing their jobs.Others live in more rural areas where that connection isn’t possible.So, they’re adding satellite solutions and distributing hotspot devices.“The 5,000 devices that are going out in the next week or two in that initial order, zero are being paid for by families,” said Loftus.There are also options for undocumented families and those who don’t want to share personal information to secure a connection.“To get that service without having to give details about their financial background, immigration status,” said Loftus.Most of the new connections are coming at no cost to parents or students thanks in-part to money from the CARES Act.The COE is also working with legislators on Senate Bill 1130 that would build new infrastructure in communities that need it.They’re in the process of surveying families to see who still needs connectivity as their programs are rolling out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Time is running out to sign up for the San Diego Promise, a tuition-free college program within the San Diego Community College District. So far more than 1,700 students from 198 California high schools have signed up for the program, which provides tuition and textbook grants for up to two years for first-time, full-time students. The deadline to apply is June 28. Officials with the district say about three times more students have so far signed up compared to last year. “The San Diego Promise offers much more than a financial guarantee,” said Lynn Neault, SDCCD Vice Chancellor of Student Services. “The program’s many wrap-around services result in San Diego Promise students faring better than their non-Promise counterparts academically.”To sign up, students need to complete a fall 2019 admissions application for City, Mesa or Miramar colleges, complete a 2019-2020 FAFSA application and fill out a Promise application. All first-time students are eligible to apply, regardless of financial status, the district says. The program launched in 2016 with 186 students participating. During the 2017-2018 school year, that number increased to 661.
