LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (KABC) -- A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was killed after being hit by a vehicle on the 15 Freeway in Lake Elsinore Saturday. The officer was hit by a sedan near Nichols Road at about 4:30 p.m. and airlifted to a hospital, prompting a closure of the southbound lanes. The officer killed was identified by CHP in a social media post as Sgt. Steve Licon. "Our hearts are heavy after the immeasurable loss of a friend, father, husband, and hero," the social media post said. The southbound lanes of the freeway were fully closed from Indian Truck Trail to Nichols Road due to a police investigation, Caltrans said. LEIMERT PARK (CNS) - A 5-year-old boy was killed Wednesday when he apparently found a gun that went off in his hands inside a Leimert Park home. Los Angeles police responded at 1:15 p.m. to reports of a shooting in the home in the 2000 block of Van Ness Avenue, and the child was found inside. ``Initially it appears to be a self-inflicted'' gunshot, an LAPD official told City News Service. (KGTV) — It took a true team effort to help disentangle a humpback whale spotted off La Jolla's coast this week.SeaWorld says the 35-foot whale was reported late Thursday by local birdwatcher Gary Nunn as its swam near shore. Rescue team members traveled about one mile out from Scripps Pier on Friday to find the animal tangled in about 900 feet of rope and weighed down by six fishing traps called pots.SeaWorld rescuers spent four hours cutting the whale free. A local fishing vessel — called McGhee Marie — helped haul the gear away. (KGTV) - Dr. Greg Skomal and Meteorologist Joe Merchant are working together as they test a new theory on how sea breeze may correlate with set off a predatory chain reaction.So far their research has taken them to the Bahamas and Cape Cod, both locations on the East Coast, given several recent attacks. Skomal says, "It could be weather conditions it could be water temperature so were testing all these various factors to see if there's any patterns including Joe's ideas that drive the behavior of these sharks." Merchant believes a weather condition called a sea breeze may set off a predatory chain reaction. He says it brings nutrient rich deep water closer to the surface, attracting tiny marine life, which attracts larger fish and in turn attract the oceans largest predators, sharks. Fisheries Research Biologist Heidi Dewar tells 10News, "On the East Coast you have the warm Gulf Stream that moves broad on a continental shelf and our coast we have a cold current coming from the north and a very narrow continental shelf." For this reason, we may not be able to use the same theory for our coast."It's not clear that would translate to the West Coast; we have a very different ecosystem over here," Dewar tells 10News. Dewar says pinpointing sharks' locations and predicting where they will be next is going to require much more data and research. (CNS) - A fire burning near the Lake Hughes area is 12% contained Friday morning after scorching 11,000 acres and destroying three structures, authorities said.Firefighters, meanwhile, braced for dangerously hot weather caused by a heat wave this weekend."Near critical fire weather conditions could develop Friday afternoon and evening as gusty onshore winds could combine with warm and dry conditions in place," the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported Thursday.Crews were able to take advantage of improved fire weather conditions Thursday with slightly lower temperatures and moisture from the former hurricane Elida moving across the area, the department said."Current objectives include keeping the fire north of Castaic Lake, south of Highway 138, east of Red Rock Mountain and west of Tule Ridge," the department said.The fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest and was 12% contained as of 7 a.m. Friday, according to the u. S. Forest Service, which was battling the blaze with Los Angeles County Fire Department crews and assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Monterey Park, Long Beach and Santa Monica fire departments.The fire's size was listed as 11,000 acres Thursday night, with three structures destroyed and 5,420 threatened, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. No injuries have been reported."There have been areas of this fire that have not burned in decades, (and) it's in inaccessible terrain, which has added to the complexity of the fire," said Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby.Although some structures were lost, a number of structures were saved by firefighters, he said."It's going to be a hot, dry summer -- and it's going to be a very, very hot, dry weekend," Osby said.On Wednesday, the fire west of Palmdale had a "rapid rate of spread," amid temperatures in the mid-90s, low humidity and gusty winds, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
