A now-deceased University of Michigan doctor is being investigated for complaints of sexual abuse. The university is asking any former patients of Robert E. Anderson who believe they were subjected to sexual misconduct during a medical exam to contact the U-M Compliance Hotline.Anderson was a former director of University Health Service and a former athletic team physician who worked at the university from 1968 until his retirement in 2003. He died in 2008.An investigation began in July 2018 when a former student athlete wrote to Athletic Director Warde Manual to detail abuse during medical exams by Anderson in the early 1970s, the university says.During the investigation, the university says it identified dozens of people who described incidents of sexual misconduct by Anderson. Now, the university is asking anyone with additional information to come forward.“The allegations that were reported are disturbing and very serious,” said President Mark Schlissel in a news release. “We promptly began a police investigation and cooperated fully with the prosecutor’s office. The former patients describe sexual misconduct and unnecessary medical exams, the university says. The exams reportedly took place in the 1970s, with at least one incident reported in the 1990s.“As part of our commitment to understanding what happened and inform any changes we might need to make, we now are taking the next step to reach out to determine who else might be affected or have additional information to share. Every person in our community should expect to feel safe and supported.”The Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office determine that no criminal charges would be authorized. To submit a report, call the Compliance Hotline at 866-990-0111."I want to urge any former student athlete with information they are willing to share confidentially to come forward," Manuel said. "The health and safety of our student athletes is our highest priority."This article was written by 1982

A visibly shaken Beto O'Rourke announced Saturday he was cutting a campaign stop in Las Vegas short to return to his hometown of El Paso, Texas, following early reports of a fatal shooting there.Multiple people were killed Saturday in a shooting in the area of the Cielo Vista Mall, according to local police."I'm thinking about El Paso, I want you to be thinking about El Paso as well," O'Rourke told the audience, taking the stage Saturday at a labor union forum in Las Vegas. The 2020 Democratic presidential candidate and former Texas congressman also shared that he called his wife, Amy, immediately after he received the news."She's driving with my daughter Molly and to talk to her," O'Rourke said, his voice wavering. "Just a real reminder of what's most important at the end of the day for all of us."O'Rourke said that the shooting shatters "any illusion that we had that progress is inevitable or that the change that we need is going to come of its own accord.""There is no luxury in this democracy of sitting this one out, whether it is gun violence, whether it is many of the issues we discuss today," O'Rourke said, adding, "It is on every single one of us to make this right."In a media gaggle soon after his appearance, he told reporters he was incredibly saddened."It is very hard to think about this," he said. "But I tell you, El Paso is the strongest place in the world. This community's going to come together. I'm going back there right now to be with my family and to be with my hometown."When initial reports of a shooting surfaced, O'Rourke tweeted, "Truly heartbreaking. Stay safe, El Paso. Please follow all directions of emergency personnel as we continue to get more updates."O'Rourke was born in El Paso and in 2012 was elected to represent Texas' 16th Congressional District, which includes El Paso and the surrounding area.Other 2020 Democratic candidates also responded to the shooting while attending the labor forum hosted by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.Marianne Williamson, a native of Houston, offered prayers for the people of El Paso and "prayers for all the rest of us as well, that we might summon up the courage to remove this scourge from out midst."Julián Castro, formerly the mayor of San Antonio, 2292
A study released on Wednesday claims that a small number of people are taking antibiotics designed for fish leading to dangerous unintended consequences. Co-author Brandon Bookstaver, Pharm.D., director of residency and fellowship training at the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy, released a statement expressing concern over the trend. “While human consumption of fish antibiotics is likely low, any consumption by humans of antibiotics intended for animals is alarming,” Bookstaver said. “Self-medication and the availability of antibiotics without healthcare oversight might contribute to increasing antimicrobial resistance and delayed appropriate treatment. We were particularly concerned that the high volume of positive feedback on the comments about human use might encourage others to attempt to use these drugs.”What makes fish antibiotics unique is that its available over the counter. A bottle of 30 tablets sell for as low as .99 online, the study found. The study found that 55 out of 2,288 interviewed admitted to taking fish antibiotics. But what concerned Michael Ganio, ASHP Director of Pharmacy Practice and Quality, is that the fish pills have the same look as human antibiotics. “What might seem like a less expensive, easier way to treat an assumed infection can ultimately have very serious negative consequences,” said Ganio. “Unlike antibiotics for humans or other animals, these medications are completely unregulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Even if the pills look the same, it’s impossible to know that medications purchased in this manner contain what the label says and are safe for humans. Antibiotics, like all medications, should be dispensed from a licensed pharmacy after a diagnosis and prescription from a medical professional.” 1807
