A fire at a Pennsylvania day care center early Sunday killed five children, including four siblings, officials said.Four people were injured, including two teenagers who jumped from a second-floor window onto a porch of the home in Erie to escape the flames, Erie Fire Chief Guy Santone told CNN in an interview. Santone said the homeowner was injured, along with a neighbor who tried to enter the burning home to rescue victims.Eight people were in the home when the fire broke out around 1:15 a.m., Santone said. The home also operated as a day care, according to fire officials."I was just down there, there's flowers everywhere," Santone said about a memorial at the scene. "Nobody likes to see this, especially when it's kids."Firefighters rescued the five children from second-story bedrooms at the front of the home, 836

A man was arrested in Florida after sheriff's deputies say he tried to steal a car from an elderly man in Orlando. The reason he was unsuccessful? He didn't appear to know how to drive a stick shift, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred Tuesday when an elderly man left his car running with the keys in the ignition while he was putting his walker into the trunk.According to the sheriff's office, a man, later identified as 25-year-old Jaylen Alexander, allegedly attacked the elderly man, slamming the hood of the trunk on his chest and his walker.Alexander is accused of then getting into the man's car, locking the doors and trying to drive away. After stalling multiple times, Alexander left the car and took off running, the sheriff's office said. The elderly man told authorities he believed the reason Alexander stalled was because he did not know how to drive a manual transmission, according to a sheriff's arrest affidavit.A few minutes later, Alexander allegedly stole a car from a health care clinic across the street, where a woman had left her car running while she went to get her mother from inside, the sheriff's office told 1187
A hotel cook apparently upset over human resources issues has been arrested for allegedly planning a mass shooting of his coworkers and guests at a Marriott property in Long Beach, California, city police said Wednesday.A tip from a colleague led police to arrest Rodolfo Montoya, 37, at his Huntington Beach home, Chief Robert Luna said at a news conference.Police seized firearms, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and tactical gear, including high-capacity magazines and an assault rifle, which are illegal to possess in California, Long Beach Police said in a news release."Suspect Montoya had clear plans, intent, and the means to carry out an act of violence that may have resulted in a mass-casualty incident," Luna said.Montoya will appear in court as early as Thursday, Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office spokesman Ricardo Santiago said. It was not immediately clear whether Montoya has an attorney. At least 28 people have been arrested over threats to commit mass attacks since massacres this month in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. Just after the shootings, the FBI director issued a directive for agency offices nationwide to conduct a new threat assessment.Montoya doesn't appear to have a criminal history that would prevent him from legally owning the types of guns allowed in California, Luna said.He was booked on manufacturing and distributing assault weapons, possession of an assault weapon and making a criminal threat and is being held on 0,000 bail at the Long Beach City Jail, the news release states. The district attorney's office expects the police department to present its case Thursday, Santiago told CNN. 1662
