BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese equities continued gains on Monday from last week's trading and advanced to a four-month high since late September as signs of an economic recovery, a raft of stimulus plans and a rally in the U.S. stock market boosted confidence, said analysts.     The government rolled out plans to revive the textile industry and machinery manufacturing industry last week after auto and steel stimulus packages. Measures to support the shipping industry, the non-ferrous metal industry and others are yet to come.     These efforts helped buoyed market confidence, said analysts. The country's economy was resilient and posted signs of recovery, partially because of the economic stimulus plans as the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of the manufacturing sector released on Feb.4 rose to 45.3 in January from 41.2 in December.     The Shanghai A-share index rose 43.47 points, or 1.99 percent, to close at 2,224.71, and the Shenzhen Component Index posted a bigger rise of 4.06 percent, or 315.79 points, to 8,087.69.     Combined turnover climbed to a nearly nine-month high at 235.5 billion yuan (34.5 billion U.S. dollars), up from the 189.6 billion yuan from the previous trading day.     Gains outnumber losses by 841 to 29 in Shanghai and 713 to 34 in Shenzhen.     Non-ferrous metal rose across the board boosted by rising metal prices. Shanghai copper surged by its daily limit of 5 percent, or1,400 yuan per tonne to 29,510 yuan per tonne. Shanghai aluminum rose 3.56 percent to 12,225 yuan per tonne. Their gains also lifted other base metals.     Aluminum Corporation of China, the country's largest aluminum producer, advanced by the daily limit of 10 percent to end at 9.56yuan. Yunnan copper, China's third largest smelter of the metal, rose by the daily limit of 10 percent to 13.07 yuan. Liaoning-based Huludao Zinc Industry also gained by the daily limit of 10 percent to 4.16 yuan.     China Cosco Holdings Co. surged by the daily limit of 10 percent to 10.74 yuan after the Baltic Dry Index, a gauge of commodity shipping costs, posted a strong rise of 53 percent over last week. China Shipping Container Lines Company moved up 6.49 percent to 3.34 yuan.

BEIJING, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- North China's severe drought is still threatening 104 million mu (6.9 million hectares) of farmland in north China, the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Sunday.     The drought-affected farmland dropped only 6.41 million mu, compared to a day earlier, although the country is going all out to fight the worst drought in decades, including artificial rain.     Among the total affected farmland, 30.33 million mu was seriously threatened by the drought, though 940,000 mu less than a day earlier, and 4.21 million mu had dried out, according to the office.     In the meantime, 4.68 million people and 2.5 million heads of livestock are still facing water shortage.     About 88.42 million mu of winter wheat crops are suffering from the drought, 5.88 million mu less than a day earlier, in provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan, Shandong, Shaanxi, and Gansu.     The respite was limited as there was no effective rainfall in the drought-hit winter wheat growing provinces Saturday, although 5.11 million mu of wheat farmland was watered by irrigation facilities.

DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in the Tanzanian capital of Dar es Salaam Saturday night for a state visit to the eastern African nation.     Hu was greeted by Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete and a local performance at the airport.     In a statement released upon arrival, Hu said the bilateral relationship has been developing in a sound and smooth way since 45 years ago when the diplomatic ties were established.     "It can be viewed as an exemplary relationship of sincerity, solidarity and cooperation between China and an African country and between two developing countries," Hu said.     The president said his visit is aimed at enhancing mutual trust, expanding cooperation, planning for the future and lifting the friendly and cooperative relations to a new high.     Hu said he is expecting an in-depth exchange of views with President Kikwete and other Tanzanian leaders on the bilateral relations and regional and international issues of mutual interest.     During his stay here, Hu will also meet with Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume, attend the completion ceremony of Tanzania's state stadium, visit a cemetery for Chinese experts, and deliver a key-note speech at a welcoming meeting on Monday. JEJU, ROK, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), unveiled a new Confucius Institute here Saturday soon after his arrival.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, cut the ribbon for the Republic of Korea's 13th Confucius Institute, the Chinese-teaching institution overseas.     The institute was set up in Cheju Halla College, the largest private institute of high learning in Jeju Special-Governing Province of the Republic of Korea (ROK).     When addressing the opening ceremony, Li said that China and ROK were inter-linked geographically and culturally. "The cultural exchanges boast profound historic foundation and favorable realistic environment," he said. ROK is the last leg of Li's four-nation tour which has already taken him to Australia, Myanmar and Japan.
