SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Thursday for help in identifying a motorist involved in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian last week in a Chollas Creek-area neighborhood. The 48-year-old victim was standing next to a parked vehicle along the west curb line of the 5300 block of Chollas Parkway shortly before 1 a.m. Friday when a dark-colored car traveling to the south at high speed on the wrong side of the street hit him, according to San Diego police.Following the fatal impact, the motorist stopped momentarily, then drove off, Officer Robert Heims said. The victim, whose name has been withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.Surveillance cameras captured images of the vehicle -- a four-door sedan, possibly a Lexus or Toyota with a lowered suspension. Police have no description of the driver.Anyone who might be able to help investigators track down the motorist or vehicle is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or contact the agency online at sdcrimestoppers.org. Tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to ,000. 1132

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist who fled a traffic stop in Encanto Tuesday led officers on a 40-minute pursuit that ended with his arrest near Lake Hodges, authorities reported. The man refused to yield when San Diego police tried to pull him over for a traffic violation in the 6800 block of Akins Avenue shortly after 9 a.m., SDPD public-affairs Officer Michael Stirk said. The motorist drove off to the east toward Spring Valley, then entered state Route 125 and headed north, Stirk said.Reaching Santee, the man entered SR-52 and headed west, then merged onto northbound Interstate 15 when he got to the Miramar area. While passing through northern San Diego with SDPD and California Highway Patrol personnel tailing him and tracking his pursuit aboard a police helicopter, the driver managed to avoid running over several spike strips that CHP officers hurled onto the roadway in his path. After entering Escondido, however, the man finally pulled to a stop on the side of the freeway near Ninth Avenue and was taken into custody without further incident about 9:45 a.m., Stirk said. The arrestee's name was not immediately available. 1139

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An April 30 trial date was set today for a North Carolina man accused of raping and murdering a 79-year-old woman in her Normal Heights home more than 31 years ago.Kevin Thomas Ford, now 62, was arrested in June and charged with murder and a special circumstance allegation of murder during a rape in connection with the May 20, 1987, death of Grace Hayden.Investigator Tony Johnson of the San Diego County District Attorney's Office was reviewing the cold case in May when he decided to submit a single fingerprint found on Hayden's stove to a national database. He found a match: a print submitted by police in connection with Ford's 2015 arrest on charges of communicating threats, authorities said. The fingerprint allowed San Diego detectives to issue a warrant for Ford's arrest in July.RELATED: Man pleads not guilty in 1987 rape, murder of San Diego womanThe case is expected to get pre-assigned to a judge next month. 950

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Alaska Airlines launched its first flight to Cancun from San Diego International Airport Friday and will start flights to Fort Lauderdale Saturday. The winter seasonal service to Cancun marks the first time SAN has offered nonstop service to the Mexico resort destination in more than a decade. It's the first time Alaska Airlines will offer nonstop service from San Diego to Fort Lauderdale."Nonstop service to Cancun is something our region has wanted for some time and flights to Fort Lauderdale are appreciated by those seeking additional access to leisure and business opportunities in South Florida," said Kimberly Becker, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority's president and CEO. "We are happy to add these routes to our list of nonstop destinations and would like to thank Alaska Airlines for their investment in SAN during this dynamic time."Flights to Cancun International Airport will operate four times weekly until April 12. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego molecular diagnostic company announced Thursday it has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to fund development of its coronavirus diagnostic test, which the company says would provide results in about 30 minutes.Mesa Biotech Inc. will receive both 1,330 in funding and "technical expertise" from the HHS's Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority -- or BARDA -- to complete developmental work needed to obtain Emergency Use Authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA's emergency authorizations fast-track unapproved medical products for use during a public health emergency.Mesa says its Accula SARS-CoV-2 test utilizes throat swabs to detect SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19."As the coronavirus situation escalates and the demand for testing far exceeds capacity, we are encouraged by the support of HHS in the development of our Accula SARS-CoV-2 Test," said Hong Cai, Mesa Biotech's co- founder and CEO."Our test, which was developed to enable rapid responses to global pandemics, will significantly compress the sample-to-result timeframe with a laboratory-quality test at the point-of-care," Cai said. "This accelerated response will enable health care providers to rapidly screen, isolate, treat or dismiss potential carriers of the virus."In the past week, three companies with local laboratories received emergency approval from the FDA to supply COVID-19 detection tests, including Hologic Inc. and Quidel Corp. in San Diego, and Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. in Carlsbad.Mesa Biotech's diagnostic test is one of four to receive funding from BARDA, according to the agency."Diagnostics are a critical need in the overall strategy to fight this newest global public health threat," BARDA Director Rick A. Bright said. "We need increased testing capacity in the U.S. to rapidly identify, isolate and treat those infected with COVID-19 in order to limit transmission of the virus, and we need those tests as close to the patients as possible."Currently, no FDA-approved diagnostics, vaccines or treatments for COVID-19 are available. 2168
