Anthony Wall's night started at the prom with his sister, followed by a food stop at a Waffle House in North Carolina. While at the restaurant in Warsaw, he got into a heated argument with employees, who called the police. The ensuing incident Saturday was captured on cell phone video that was widely shared on Facebook. It shows an officer putting his hand around Wall's neck and shoving him up against a glass wall as he tries to arrest him. 451

Approximately two dozen white nationalists rallied in the nation's capital on Sunday, one year after clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia, left one person dead and elevated racial tensions in America. But they were vastly outnumbered by throngs of counterprotesters. The showing from "Unite the Right 2" participants fell far short of the hundreds that organizer Jason Kessler was expecting, based on his event permit application.Photos: 'Unite the Right' white supremacist protest and counterprotest in Washington, D.C.Kessler, who organized last year's "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, blamed the low turnout on logistical issues and confusion regarding the group's transportation -- a claim echoed by at least two men who spoke to reporters. "People are scared to come out after what happened last year," one of the men added.A small stage and speaker system was set up in the park, where attendees stood silently and listened to a slate of impromptu speakers. They addressed the small group over the jeers of the anti-racist demonstrators, who chanted, "Nazis go home!" and "Shame! Shame! Shame!"The white nationalists left the park not long after they arrived, prompted by the sound of thunder and rain, and were whisked away in white vans. 1261

An obituary for a Kansas man who died of COVID-19 this week skewers those who have chosen not to wear masks in public throughout the pandemic.According to his obituary, Marvin Farr died of COVID-19 on Tuesday in western Kansas. Born in 1939 amid the Great Depression and just ahead of World War II, the remembrance says that Farr was born into times where Americans banded together for common causes — "times of loss and sacrifice difficult for most of us to imagine."However, the obituary says that's not the case today."He died in a world where many of his fellow Americans refuse to wear a piece of cloth on their face to protect one another," his obituary reads.Farr's obituary also says that his final days were "harder, scarier and lonelier than necessary" and that "he died in a room not his own, being cared for by people dressed in confusing and frightening ways." It adds that he was not surrounded by friends and family at the time of his death.Farr's obituary describes him as a farmer, veterinarian and a religious man, a person who "would look after those who had harmed him the deepest, a sentiment echoed by the healthcare workers struggling to do their jobs as their own communities turn against them or make their jobs harder."In a Facebook post on Thursday, Farr's son Courtney said he was "in shock" to see how widely the obituary had spread online. He said that while the response has been overwhelmingly positive, he has seen some negative comments, including claims that he had made his father's death about politics."Well, his death was political," Courtney Farr wrote. "He died in isolation with an infectious disease that is causing a national crisis. To pretend otherwise or to obfuscate is also a political decision."Courtney Farr says his father tested positive for the virus last week and had been in isolation since Thanksgiving."I've spent most of this year hearing people from my hometown talk about how this disease isn't real, isn't that bad, only kills old people, masks don't work, etc," Courtney Farr said in a Facebook post. "And because of the prevalence of those attitudes, my father's death was so much harder on him, his family and his caregivers than it should have been. Which is why this obit is written as it is." 2268

As America comes to grips with the nation’s handling of race relations, the Cleveland Indians and Washington Redskins have both said that now is the time to reevaluate their respective team monikers. But the Chicago Blackhawks said they will not follow suit. The National Congress of American Indians have long criticized the name. Activists say these team nicknames play up harmful racial stereotypes."The professional sports industry, specifically the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and the National Hockey League (NHL) and the leagues’ team owners have failed to address the racist origins of deplorable race based marketing strategies of the past," the report read. "Often citing a long held myth by non-Native people that 'Indian' mascots 'honor Native people,' American sports businesses such as the NFL’s Washington 'Redsk*ns' and Kansas City 'Chiefs,' MLB’s Cleveland 'Indians' and Atlanta 'Braves,' and the NHL’s Chicago Black Hawks, continue to profit from harmful stereotypes originated during a time when white superiority and segregation were common place."Each of these professional sports businesses attempt to establish a story of honoring Native peoples through the names or mascots; however, each one—be it through logos or traditions (e.g., fight songs, mascots, human impersonators, and fan culture)—diminishes the place, status, and humanity of contemporary Native citizens. What is true about many of the brand origin stories is that team owners during the birth of these brands hoped to gain financially from mocking Native identity. As a result, these businesses perpetuated racial and political inequity. Those who have kept their logos and brands, continue to do so."The Blackhawks say their team name is different as it honors a specific Native American. Black Hawk was a leader of the Sauk Native American Tribe in the early 19th century. Black Hawk served as an ally to the British during the War of 1812 in hopes of pushing the US from Sauk land."The Chicago Blackhawks' name and logo symbolizes an important and historic person, Black Hawk of Illinois' Sac & Fox Nation, whose leadership and life has inspired generations of Native Americans, veterans and the public," the team said in a statement."We celebrate Black Hawk's legacy by offering ongoing reverent examples of Native American culture, traditions and contributions, providing a platform for genuine dialogue with local and national Native American groups. As the team's popularity grew over the past decade, so did that platform and our work with these important organizations."The team said it would “raise awareness” of Black Hawk and Native American people. 2693

An 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Costa Rica on Sunday night, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The quake was centered 16 km west of Jacó, Costa Rica, at a depth of 10 km, according to the USGS. It gave the quake preliminary magnitude of 6.8, but later downgraded it.The observatory at the Universidad Nacional Costa Rica said the earthquake measured 6.9.Jacó lies southwest of Costa Rica's capital, San Jose, and is part of the region of Puntarenas, on the Pacific Coast.Emergency response agencies activatedThree people suffered fatal heart attacks that coincided with the time of the earthquake -- two in Jacó and one person further south in Coronado -- according to a statement from Costa Rica's presidency. It said the country's Judicial Investigation Agency was investigating the deaths. At least one building in Jacó had been evacuated due to apparent damage and there were reports of walls collapsing and objects falling in other parts of the country, but there were no reports of any further injuries, the statement said.Costa Rica's hospitals were functioning normally and minor power outages had been quickly resolved, it said, with the quake felt most severely in the provincial districts of Quepos, Parrita and Garabito -- of which Jacó is capital. The presidency said that emergency response agencies had been activated and remained on alert following the quake.President Luis Guillermo Solís earlier tweeted that no tsunami warning had been issued.Police called for calm. The Fuerza Publica warned on Twitter that there were landslides on the road between Jaco to Tárcoles, further north.  1634
