SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego sailor is on a mission to keep homeless veterans from going cold this winter.U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Gregory Ellis hopes to raise ,500 for winter jackets that convert into both sleeping bags and over-the-shoulder bags during the off-season.The jackets are made by the Detroit-based nonprofit The Empowerment Plan, which hires single parents from homeless shelters to sew the jackets. “Our homeless veteran community, many of them are very proud and don’t want to be a burden on anybody,” said Ellis.He plans to deliver the jackets to veterans staying at the Veterans Village of San Diego temporary bridge shelter, which houses nearly 200 homeless veterans. “A jacket that actually converts into a sleeping bag, that actually converts to an over-the-shoulder bag, it’s three times beneficial for them, so at least they’ll have something warm to put over their shoulders and keep them out of the elements.”Ellis says he wants veterans to know the community cares about them and is grateful for their service.You can donate to the fundraising effort here. 1099

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A University of San Diego professor has been suspended from campus over alleged misconduct, the university confirmed to 10News.The professor's behavior reportedly violated the university's policy and "is antithetical to our mission and values," the university said in part. Our commitment to protecting employee privacy restricts our ability to share names or details of the incident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A staff member at West Hills High School has tested positive for COVID-19, according to Grossmont Union High School District.The families of 23 students in classes affected by the positive test have been notified and will not participate in in-person classes for 14 days, according to GUHSD PIO Catherine Martin.Those students will continue their instruction virtually during that time, Martin added. All other West Hills students will continue their in-person or distance learning classes as scheduled.In a letter to parents, West Hills High principal Robin Ballarin said after reviewing the positive test with public health officials, there is no need to close the school for in-person learning."We have cleaned and disinfected, as appropriate, and our campus has been deemed safe for occupancy. We understand that this information is concerning. Staff members and students who may have come into close contact with the individual will be directly contacted by San Diego County Public Health with further instructions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – All orphaned dogs and nearly all cats at the Helen Woodward Animal Center found a home for the holidays, the center announced Thursday. A total of 64 dogs and 35 cats were adopted between December 17 and 23. The “Home 4 the Holidays” campaign started in 1999 in an effort to encourage winter-season pet seekers to choose adoption. Empty kennels give the center the opportunity to save more animals. A new group of orphaned dogs and cats are being transported to the center and will arrive before January. “This is like a little Christmas miracle,” explained Center Operations Director Jennifer Shorey. “We are delighted to help extend this bit of magic into the New Year.” 699
