SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ring doorbell video could provide the break in the strange disappearance of rent checks in North Park.A noise caused Ken Frederick to scramble from his home just past midnight Saturday, downstairs to his business, a property management company on 30th Street. He found junk mail - removed from his mailbox - coated with a sticky substance. He ended up near the front door and found a lone check that a tenant had dropped into the overnight mail slot. He checked his surveillance video, which showed a man in a hoodie appearing to jam some sort of stick-like object into the mail slot, before he removes it and takes off."We feel violated, like someone coming into your home," said Frederick.Frederick dug into his other Ring videos and found one from early last Wednesday morning. It appeared to be the same man, same hoodie, and same stick. This time, after he takes the stick out, he appears to put something in his pocket."If you know somebody's been in your business, it makes you feel insecure," said Frederick.Frederick is checking with his tenants to see if any rent checks put in the slot have disappeared. Another property management company nearby tells 10News they have had about ten rent checks vanish since June.As for the sticky substance, it's a familiar one. In the past year, 10News has reported on thieves 'fishing' checks with glue traps out of local postal collection boxes. The ink is then washed off with a chemical solution, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call San Diego Police at 619-531-2000.For renters, experts suggest either looking into online payments or making sure to drop off your rent during business hours. 1725

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of Hillcrest residents are fighting a proposed housing tower they say would take the sunshine out of their neighborhood and add traffic. Greystar Development wants to build a seven-story, 111 unit mixed-use housing complex near 7th and Robinson, not far from Whole Foods. The complex would replace the parking lot AT&T employees currently use for the company's building across the street. The lot borders a neighborhood filled with Spanish-style homes. The city gave Greystar a density bonus because it includes nine very low-income units. It also determined the developer would not have to do a costly and time-consuming environmental impact report."Housing, housing, housing is the only thing they're going to consider. And they're not going to consider the impact on the neighborhood that's there," said Tom Mullaney, who heads a group called Uptown United, which is appealing the project. Uptown United is fighting the city's determination that Greystar doesn't have to do an environmental impact report. That goes before the City Council April 23.Mullaney said Uptown United also wants the project scaled back. Jim Ivory, Greystar's senior director of development, said in a statement that company included community input in designing the project, which has the backing of the city's Uptown Community Planning group."We are proud of the design that has evolved in the last 18 months," he said. "Staff and community input has been incorporated along the way for the betterment of the project."Some in the neighborhood also welcome the project. Herbert Ross, who lives down the street, says the AT&T lot has become a public nuisance."The hangout that it's become for people who are homeless who don't clean up after themselves, I think anything would be an improvement to the area," he said. But Michael Bayless says the project would take away the direct sunlight he gets in his home office."I just came from Seattle to escape the lack of sun," he said. "It would be depressing."Greystar's development would also include retail at street level, and a 190 spot parking garage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A day-long technology fair promises to give senior citizens all the tools they need to stay up-to-date in the digital age.San Diego Oasis will host the tech fair at the Grossmont Center movie theaters on Tuesday, October 15."We're covering all areas of life," says Oasis CEO Simona Valanciute. "We want to show how technology can make it more fun, more safe and more connected."Classes at the fair will cover iPhone basics, podcasting, micro-mobility options, voice-enabled tech, cloud storage, identity theft, cord-cutting and more.Norma Mendenhall has taken a handful of iPhone classes at Oasis already. She says this kind of education is vital for her peers."As a senior, sitting at home, thinking that's not for me, I can't do that, I'm nervous about it, this is the place to take all of that doubt away," says Mendenhall.That advice is the same thing San Diego County officials want to spread. According to the County, there will be 1.2 million people above age 65 by the year 2030. Making sure they all are connected is key to keeping them safe."We've really never seen this kind of demographic shift," says Valanciute. "So, we all need to plan for this."The fair is free to anyone over 50, but San Diego Oasis wants people to register on their website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A grieving mother says the flu was the main cause in the death of her healthy teenage son.Cellphone video captured a smiling Brian Finete, 19, surprising his mother with flowers for her birthday last Tuesday night at their home in Clairemont."The moment was special. He was always a happy boy with a big heart. He loved life and always wanted to make people happy," said Maria Finete.Later that night, Finete played Xbox all night with his friend at his home. Just past 4 a.m., he went to the bathroom. About two hours later, the friend woke up and went looking for him. Finete was found collapsed in the bathroom."I started screaming, said to call 911. I start CPR," said Maria.Finete was rushed to a hospital, but was declared brain dead a few days later. He was taken off life support on Saturday."We have no words to describe this. We don't understand why," said Maria.Finete, who had no known underlying conditions, tested positive for influenza B. Doctors told her the flu had spiked his blood sugar levels, and the combination of the flu and the high blood sugar levels caused him to collapse and stop breathing. "I never thought in my mind my kid would die from that," said a tearful Maria.She says her son had few symptoms. He had a lingering cough from a cold from last month. The night before he collapsed, he woke up in a sweat next to his girlfriend."When he sleeps he always sweats a little bit. He did tell her, 'I'm not feeling that good,'" said Maria.She says he didn't have a fever, took ibuprofen for a headache and seemed fine that Tuesday night. He was discovered hours later."Just so hard to see my baby gone. Don't know what to do without him," said Maria.Amid the grief: the pain of 'what ifs.' Her son decided not to get a flu shot this season, despite almost always getting it in the past."Take it. Take the flu shot if you can," said Maria.
