SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A connecting trolley line to San Diego's airport has taken another step closer to reality.Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly signed an exclusive agreement at the Pentagon Thursday to redevelop the former SPAWAR facility, now "NAVWAR," into a transit hub. SANDAG and Navy plan to collaborate on a hub similar to "Grand Central Station" adjacent to the airport, as well as a modernized complex for Navy use."This new agreement is built on San Diego's strong naval heritage," Faulconer said. The project could potentially run an estimated .8 to .7 billion, according to City News Service. Some of that funding could come from the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, which signed a 10-year agreement with airlines to fund airport public transportation.In September 2019, SANDAG officials and then-Navy Secretary Richard Spencer signed a memorandum of understanding to explore their visions for the 72-acre site off Interstate 5.Currently the site is home to more than 5,000 personnel, including Naval cybersecurity and information officials with Naval Information Warfare Systems Command. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A car traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into a tree and power pole in the College Area late Sunday night, leaving nearly 2,000 residents without power.At around 11:45 p.m., San Diego police’s ABLE helicopter spotted and began following a car that was running several red lights and driving fast.As SDPD units were called to the car’s location, the vehicle lost control and slammed into a tree and then a power pole in the 4700 block of 54th Street.ABC 10News learned the transformer on the power pole was damaged, causing a power outage in the immediate area for a brief period.The driver got out of the wreckage and fled the scene, but officers tracked him down a short time later and took him into custody.Police learned the car involved had been reported stolen.No other details were released. 832

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 26-year-old was hospitalized late Saturday night after being struck by an SUV while riding his motorcycle.Police say the man was crossing an intersection at 5th Avenue and Ash Street around 9:41 when 82-year-old Herbert Green ran a red light and hit the 26-year-old.The rider flew off the bike when police say he hit a parked car with his head. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officers were able to catch up to and arrest Green several blocks away from the scene of the crash. 545

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three San Diego County sheriff's deputies were justified in fatally shooting an Alpine man who charged at them with a knife in his hand last fall, according to a report released Wednesday by the District Attorney's Office.Daniel Ayala, 31, was shot 10 times outside his apartment in the 2600 block of Alpine Boulevard last Nov. 12.Sgt. Chris Katra, Cpl. Sean McGillicuddy and Deputy Kevin Nulton responded to that address around 2:50 p.m. following reports that a man was screaming, talking about killing himself and others, and throwing items, according to a letter prepared by District Attorney Summer Stephan and addressed to San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore.Body camera footage from two of the lawmen was also released by the D.A.'s office.RELATED: Man who was fatally shot by deputies in Alpine identifiedAs the deputies approached the front door of Ayala's unit and knocked, announcing ``Sheriff's Department'' three times, Ayala opened the door, said ``What's up!'' and jabbed a knife twice through his metal screen door, the body-worn camera footage shows.The deputies backed up from the door as Nulton alerted the others by saying ``Knife, knife, knife.''Ayala then opened the screen door and advanced towards the lawmen, who opened fire, striking him mostly in the upper body, according to Stephan's letter.Ayala died at the scene. His 5-year-old son was inside the apartment during the entire encounter, but was physically unharmed, according to the district attorney.Toxicology results showed Ayala had methamphetamine, heroin, cannabis and alcohol in his system.Stephan's letter concludes that the deputies ``were in a confined space when Ayala advanced on them quickly with a knife in his hand.''
