Recent Vanderbilt University graduates who made a germ-resistant phone case after contracting COVID-19 have now sold 1,000 cases. They are donating as many cases to health care workers."Now that they have them in their hands, just the positive response we have been getting is just something that we weren't fully expecting," said Nick O'Brien.RELATED: College seniors create germ-resistant copper phone case after recovering from COVID-19After contracting the novel coronavirus, Nick O'Brien, Isaac Lichter, and Andrew Medland founded Aeris and created their first product, a copper-coated phone case."Copper is very effective at continuously killing germs, a whole variety of microbes including the novel coronavirus," said Isaac Lichter. In a matter of months, the entrepreneurs who graduated from Vanderbilt, moved to San Diego and are now producing their product on an industrial scale. They are able to fill orders as soon as they come in and make good on their promise to donate a case to a healthcare worker for each one purchased. On Friday, Aeris donated phone cases to Vanderbilt University Medical Center."I am very excited to see what these 250 healthcare workers have to say," said Lichter.Next, the company plans to donate cases to hospitals in their hometowns, including New York City and San Diego.Aeris is working on new designs that incorporate copper."We see the future as copper-covered," said Lichter. "We knew we didn't want to be a phone case company. We see the real value in this."WTVF's Hannah McDonald first reported this story. 1562

Researchers at the University at Buffalo say they've developed a low-cost new technology that can identify whether drugs are present. They believe the chemical-sensing chip could someday test someone or something for cocaine, marijuana or opioids just as quickly and cheaply as a breathalyzer tests for alcohol. 324

President Donald Trump will announce his decision on who to nominate to the Supreme Court on Saturday, and CNN and the New York Times reported Friday per their sources that Trump intends to nominate Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the court.Trump's formal announcement comes at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday.Barrett’s likely nomination will come just eight days following the death of liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who laid in state in the US Capitol on Friday.Barrett, 48, was previously confirmed by the US Senate to the federal Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in 2017. Her vote garnered the support of three Democrats, Joe Donnelly, Tim Kaine, and Joe Manchin. She is a disciple of Justice Antonin Scalia, serving as his clerk in 1998 and 1999. Given her conservative bona fides, she is expected to give the Supreme Court a clear conservative advantage, fueling hopes from the evangelical right to overturn Roe versus Wade, which has set the precedent for abortion cases for nearly five decades. Liberals say Barrett’s legal views are too heavily influenced by her religious beliefs and fear her ascent to the nation’s highest court could lead to a scaling back of hard-fought abortion rights. She also would replace the justice who is best-known for fighting for women’s rights and equality.Sen. Dianne Feinstein told Barrett her views suggested religious tenets could guide her thinking on the law, the California Democrat telling Barrett: “The conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you.”Barrett responded that her views had evolved and that she agreed judges shouldn’t “follow their personal convictions in the decision of a case, rather than what the law requires.”While two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, have said that a confirmation should not come so close to an election, enough Republican senators have said they would be supportive of Trump’s nominee to ensure a confirmation.Trump will likely become the first president to fill three Supreme Court vacancies in a single term since President Richard Nixon’s first term from 1969 through 1973.At just 48, Barrett would be the youngest justice and her tenure could last for decades. She’s made her mark in law primarily as an academic at the University of Notre Dame, where she began teaching at age 30. She first donned judges’ robes in 2017 after Trump nominated her to the 7th Circuit. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 2464

Regardless of their author, the content of the hacked tweets is something I have talked about at length in my book, in podcasts and in countless interviews regarding my decision to resign, as well as the constant work and reflection I’ve done since then.— Katie Hill (@KatieHill4CA) October 7, 2020 306

President Donald Trump suggested on Saturday he's done confronting Russian President Vladimir Putin over his country's election meddling since it's insulting to the Russian leader.Trump said he took Putin at his word that Russia did not seek to interfere in the US presidential election last year, despite a finding from US intelligence agencies that it did. The fraught relations between the two leaders was underscored anew when Putin's spokesman said election meddling did not come up when they spoke, even though Trump said it did.And he stressed that bigger issues persist between the United States and Russia that require the two leaders to move on. 663
