She said the jellyfish is helping her team identify the coronavirus in the air.Her team works to find what's in the air behind the scenes. They do it with a sensor box not much bigger than an Amazon Echo at home.The sensor can detect pathogens in the air like Ecoli, SARS and anthrax.In March, they shifted gears in what type of pathogen they wanted to find."We took what we had and we kind of improved on it to really meet the challenges of today with COVID," Dr. Al-Momen said.The sensor can count particles down to the smallest micron that the common eye would never catch.To detect the coronavirus, they made adjustments."For COVID, we have the SARS code 2 antibody in that cell. So, what happens is when we get the sample of the air and the sensor gets the sample of the air there is a pathogen that binds into the cell and connects to it it will emit light," Dr. Al-Momen said.To help identify pathogens scientists use a luminescent component from a jellyfish; something that is nothing new when working to identify viruses and diseases."This particular methodology was created in the early 2000s by the MIT Lincoln Labs to specifically identify anthrax threats when anthrax was an issue," Dr. Al-Momen said.The jellyfish's protein helps light up a cell when a pathogen from the air is connected to or binds to it.The team then uses sophisticated algorithms that measure the intensity of the light that can determine whether it's positive or negative.The sensors cost tens of thousands of dollars and are geared towards larger corporations such as hospitals and senior care facilities.Senseware is currently in the Beta testing phase and they hope to offer the machine commercially by November.For more information about Senseware, visit their website. The COVID-19 pandemic has shined a bright light on healthcare professionals and the need for more across the country.Xavier University, in Cincinnati, is working to fill the shortage by launching new programs across the state of Ohio. The college just added a third accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree based in Cleveland. It's a fast-paced program where students can earn a ABSN degree in just 16 months.“It’s been interesting with the pandemic and COVID to start a new program but we were very prepared," said Dr. Sandra Harris.Dr. Harris is the associate director of Cleveland's ABSN program. She said the first class, which began in May, consisted of just nine students, but that grew to 41 with the second class which began in August. Dr. Harris said the hope is that each cohort is comprised of 70 students to reach full capacity."It's been very positive," she said. "The students are excited to be here." The 16 months consists of 63 credit hours of online and onsite learning. The students complete the coursework online, take simulation labs at the Learning Center, based in Independence, and work alongside trained, professional nurses for clinicals partnering with the Cleveland Clinic.Though the pandemic is causing some roadblocks for students, the program came at an opportune time. Ohio, and much of the nation, is currently facing a shortage of nurses and healthcare professionals.“In acute care, in rehab and the emergency departments," Dr. Harris said.But the field has growing interest. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 7% from 2019 to 2029 - faster than the average for all occupations.Breanna Harper is one of the 41 students currently enrolled in the program. She earned a four-year degree earlier this year from Drexel University, located in Philadelphia, but she's hitting the books once again hoping to fulfill her dreams of becoming a nurse."It's what I'm passionate about," she said. "I've been taking care of people my whole life. I just want to help people feel their best self."The young professional moved to Cleveland from Vallejo, California specifically for the Xavier program and its affiliation with the Cleveland Clinic.“It's the perfect environment to learn what you need to learn to be a nurse. It’s a dream come true almost. You can’t ask for a better clinical experience," she said.Harper is currently working inside the Cleveland Clinic to earn her clinical hours. She said seeing the healthcare professionals in action has given her a new appreciation for their work."It takes a lot of love and a lot of dedication for what you're doing to come into work 12 hours, sometimes more, every single day with a smile on your face and you're not showing any strain or stress meanwhile they have other stuff going on like kids or a family," she said. "It's a lot of respect I have for them and it just shows how passionate you have to be to be in this type of field."Collin Ninke is also enrolled in the program. He said the program is certainly tough but he's enjoying the hands-on experience inside the hospitals.“It’s been tough. It’s been a handful but they give it to you in a really scheduled out way," he said.Ninke said he hopes to work inside an intensive care unit or emergency room after graduating next December.For Harper, her dream is to work inside a labor and delivery unit. CHICAGO, Ill. – The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) celebrated its 110th anniversary this month. Just days later, they filed for bankruptcy protection. The move came as the organization was hit with dozens of child sexual abuse lawsuits dating back decades. “The boy scouts have had the problem of pedophiles targeting their troops since the very earliest days,” said attorney Chris Hurley with the Chicago based law firm Hurley McKenna & Mertz. The firm has represented more than a dozen former boy scouts who claim they were the victims of sexual abuse. “The Boy Scouts approach over all those many years was to keep it secret, to suppress the information, not share it with the community and not really addressed the problem,” said Hurley. The problem, however, has been known for decades. Court records revealed that since the 1920s, the BSA compiled “red” lists of adult volunteers identified as potential child molesters. They were known as the “ineligible files” or “perversion files.” One serial pedophile, who was twice convicted in Indiana before preying on hundreds of boy scouts in Illinois, was Thomas Hacker. He was convicted in 1989 and sentenced to 100 years in prison, where he died. Hurley settled 18 cases brought by Hacker’s victims. “I interviewed Thomas Hacker in prison and asked him why he chose the Boy Scouts. And what he told me was. ‘It was just so easy. They really didn't do anything to stop me.’” Two weeks ago, the Boy Scouts of America announced a five-year-partnership with an organization that provides services to male survivors of sexual abuse. The BSA isn’t talking but issued a statement in which president & CEO Roger Mosby wrote: “We sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed in Scouting. In addition to implementing strong policies to prevent abuse, we are dedicated to supporting victims when and how they need it.” Sweeping new legal changes extending or eliminating the statute of limitations for victims to sue their abusers have been passed in more than a dozen states like California, New York and New Jersey. That’s led to more survivors coming forward and filing suit, but with last week’s bankruptcy filing by the BSA, everything’s been put on hold. In its filing, the organization estimates its assets at between billion and billion. “The bankruptcy is really an attempt by the Boy Scout organization to control the damages and control hopefully how much money they have to pay out and to get a cut off for any more claims,” said Hurley. A portion of those assets will likely go to compensate victims. But anyone who has not filed a claim by a looming deadline could be barred from future settlements. “The bill has come due. DENVER, Colo. — Matthew Dolloff, the man accused of shooting Lee Keltner while acting as a security guard outside of a protest in Denver last Saturday, will be charged with second-degree murder.The Denver District Attorney's Office said formal charges against the 30-year-old Dolloff would be filed Monday.Lee Keltner, 49, was leaving the Denver's Civic Center Park when he and Dolloff got into an alleged altercation that ended with Dolloff shooting Keltner, according to witnesses, video, photos and an arrest affidavit.Keltner was pronounced dead at Denver Health Medical Center.There had been a “Patriot muster” in nearby Civic Center Park and a competing “BLM-Antifa Soup Drive,” as it was branded, in the hours before the incident.Dolloff faces between 16 and 48 years in prison if he is convicted of second-degree murder, the district attorney’s office said.Dolloff was working as a private security guard who was hired by Denver NBC affiliate 9News through Pinkerton, though Pinkerton said in a statement Monday that Dolloff “is not a Pinkerton employee but rather a contractor agent from a long standing [sic] industry vendor” and that it would cooperate with the investigation.9News management said in a new statement Tuesday that it had also asked of Pinkerton that the guards it supplied not be armed. The news outlet also released video shot from a producer's cell phone showing the moments before and after the shooting.“As stated yesterday, 9NEWS does not contract directly with individual security personnel. 9NEWS contracted with Pinkerton and had directed that security guards accompanying our personnel not be armed. PARADISE, Calif. – The struggle to emerge from rubble and ash now grips the town of Paradise, California. “We’ve all been through the same thing,” said Mayor Jody Jones. “So much trauma. Nobody else really knows what we’ve been through.” Last year, the Camp Fire, as it is called, destroyed 19,000 homes and killed more than 80 people killed. The recovery has been slow. Though the town issued 500 building permits after the fire, so far, only nine homes have been rebuilt. However, 3,000 people are back, along with nearly 200 small businesses that reopened, like Nic’s Restaurant. “The biggest challenge is timing,” said restaurant owner Nicky Jones, “because there’s so many people wanting to rebuild.” The challenges are staggering. Flames scorched hundreds of thousands of trees that now need to be removed because they’re in danger of falling. The fire also left behind something more ominous: contaminated soil. “For the burnt properties, more than half of them are contaminated,” Mayor Jones said. Evacuation routes there also remain woefully inadequate, potentially trapping people again, should another wildfire break out -- much like they are currently raging in other parts of California. “I think, right now, looking at the fires in California and people got to start asking those tough questions - at what point do I decide I don't want to move back out there?” said Robert Allen, an adjunct professor specializing in risk management at Tulane University.
