SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez announced Thursday she will place a proposed ballot measure to expand police oversight and create an Independent Police Practices Commission on the docket for the June 23 council meeting."The murder of George Floyd has exposed a crumbling faith in government and mistrust of police that must be addressed immediately," Gomez said. "It's critical that we build trust between communities and law enforcement and restore the public's faith in police oversight. We need to address the reality that many communities have been treated unfairly by police and have nowhere to turn to correct injustice."During a marathon meeting Tuesday that lasted about 10 hours, dozens of people phoned in during the public comment period and called for defunding the police and voicing support for the Black Lives Matter movement."I want the public to know that we are advancing the Independent Police Practices Commission measure without delay, and my hope is to bring together everyone on the council -- Democrat, Republican, Independent -- for a unanimous vote," Gomez said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council declined to report details of its closed-door discussion Tuesday on a draft appraisal of price and payment terms for the city's potential sale of the SDCCU Stadium site to San Diego State University.The council met in closed session to discuss the undisclosed terms of the appraisal with its negotiating team, composed of officials in various city departments and the city attorney's office. Both the city and SDSU have expressed an intent to exchange the property for "fair market value," but what that entails remains opaque.D.F. Davis Real Estate estimated the fair market value of the site sits at .2 million, according to documents.The city is currently in the process of selling a 132-acre parcel of land to SDSU as the university intends to redevelop the parcel, which includes SDCCU Stadium, into a 35,000-seat stadium to be primarily used by the university's football team, a satellite campus, a park along the San Diego River and commercial and residential space.After the closed session, City Councilwoman Barbara Bry called for the draft appraisal to be released to the public and for all future discussions of the sale to take place in an open session."It is now time for SDSU to make an offer which honors the terms of Measure G and the promises that were made during the campaign," Bry said in a statement. "This offer should include a commitment to building the river park and designing a transit-dependent development."City officials have also noted their concern over certain elements of the project's draft environmental impact report, such as the university's analysis of how the project will affect traffic patterns in Mission Valley. The council must approve a final version of the report prior to completing the sale.On Monday, the Friends of SDSU, a group of university alumni and community members, called on the city to accept the appraisal without changes, arguing that the project would be transformative for the city and SDSU will be a good steward in overseeing the land."Introduction of extraneous considerations that are inconsistent with the provisions of voter-approved Measure G or are outside the mutually agreed-to guidelines for the appraisal could substantially delay or threaten altogether the successful transfer of this property," Friends of SDSU wrote in a letter to Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the council.San Diego voters approved the plan, then known as SDSU West and now dubbed SDSU Mission Valley, last November. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Tuesday were searching for a man suspected of robbing a taco restaurant in the Mountain View area at gunpoint.It happened shortly before 8:50 p.m. Monday at an eatery on Ocean View Boulevard between South 36th and South 37th streets, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The thief walked up to the counter, pointed a black handgun at the clerk and demanded money from the register, Buttle said.The clerk complied. The gunman fled out the back door and continued running northbound on South 37th Street with an undisclosed amount of cash, he said.No injuries were reported.The bandit was described as a 5-foot-4 Hispanic man in his 20s with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a blue hooded windbreaker with a white collar.Robbery detectives were investigating the incident.v 815

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SDCCU Stadium in Mission Valley was added to the 30th annual list of the top 10 endangered landmarks and cultural landscapes in San Diego released Tuesday by the Save Our Heritage Organisation.SOHO called the facility -- known until recently as Qualcomm Stadium -- "one of the few mid-century designed, multi-purpose stadiums" to remain standing in the United States."Innovative design features include the pre-cast concrete, pre-wired light towers and spiral concrete pedestrian ramps," according to SOHO. "The novel form of the stadium -- eight concentric circles -- provides excellent sight lines."While current proposals for the site include knocking the stadium down, SOHO urged city leaders to adapt the structure for future uses like college football or soccer games.SOHO, which advocates for maintaining San Diego's historical buildings and sites, as well as unique architectural styles, also criticized the city for continuing to ignore Presidio Park, which it described as "a decaying and unkempt embarrassment," and Balboa Park, where many of the major buildings are behind in their maintenance needs.Others on the list are: 1166
