(KGTV) – A man who reportedly tried to hit his girlfriend with a pickaxe was taken into custody after a standoff at a La Jolla Shores home.At around 10:40 a.m. Thursday, San Diego police officers were called to a house in the 2500 block of Ellentown Road after receiving reports of a domestic violence incident.10News learned a man inside reportedly threatened his girlfriend with a pickaxe, prompting her to leave. The unidentified man remained inside and refused police orders to come out."When we first got here, he was not communicating with us, he was just inside the house, yelling and screaming and banging against the wall," said SDPD Captain Tina Williams.While officers tried to persuade him to surrender, sections of Ellentown Road were shut down due to the police activity.At times the man appeared in the windows of the home holding the ax and knives, according to Williams. He also started a debris fire on top of his stove, sending smoke billowing from the house. Shortly after 1 p.m., the man went to the backyard, where police took him into custody without incident, according to Williams.The man was booked on suspicion of attempted assault with a deadly weapon and felony domestic violence battery.The victim was not seriously injured.Williams said the incident was not the first time police had been called to the house. "Earlier this week, we did respond out here... he was out in the middle of the street causing an altercation," she said. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police arrested two 25-year-old men after a statue of President Andrew Jackson was vandalized Thursday afternoon outside the Jackson County Courthouse in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.A protest group gathered outside the courthouse earlier in the afternoon before the statue was spray-painted with obscenities as well as the phrase "slave owner."Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) officers were called to the courthouse shortly after 5:30 p.m. Thursday to investigate ongoing vandalism at the statue and observed two suspects spray painting the monument."Officers were able to identify the two individuals responsible from a distance," a KCPD spokesman said in a statement. "Once the crowd began to disperse and they were a safe distance away, the two suspects were taken into custody in front of Police HQ."Police also called a KC Parks and Recreation crew to deal with the graffiti. The workers covered the statue with a tarp shortly before 9 p.m.Unless officials can remove the graffiti, the statue will remain covered until the county legislature decide what to do with it. I am hopeful that we are seeing a true shift in the minds and hearts of people regardless of their age, race, gender or political affiliation. (KGTV) — Coast Boulevard in La Jolla was shut down Thursday, and will remain temporarily closed, as city crews began emergency construction to stabilize a nearby cave.The city closed Coast Blvd. late Thursday to begin an emergency project to stabilize Cook's Crack after geology experts discovered a zone of weakness in the cave, which is located underneath the street.During a press conference, crews said the concern is an outright collapse of the section of road over the cave. Currently, the weakness "is not a slow settlement" and could fail if erosion happens underneath the street. Much of the dense rock had eroded, and now sand and roots were showing through from underneath.As part of the project, sections of Cave St. and Coast Blvd. will be temporarily closed to traffic for about six weeks. The city said it will make accommodations for nearby residents and business affected by the closure.Officials said the discovery came as the city assessed repairs to Coast Blvd."They said there's been some shift in the road itself," David Heine, owner of nearby Brockton Villa Restaurant, said. "The busiest two weeks of summer, literally ... Obviously safety's the number one concern for any city, and we respect that." Heine said crews are allowing pedestrians to continue to walk through the area.The city called in crews from Texas, who drove in overnight to take over the project. Friday, the crews began drilling into the street above to locate some of the weakest points. Eco-friendly polyurethane will be used to shore up those weak points, crews say.Cook's Crack is located in the area between La Jolla Cove and the popular Cave Store.
