SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A masked man wielding an aluminum baseball bat robbed a Park West-area bank Tuesday.The thief confronted a teller at the Union Bank branch office in the 300 block of Laurel Street and demanded cash about 12:15 p.m., according to the FBI.After the clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of money, the bandit left the bank and fled the area in a red car, San Diego police reported.The robber was described as a roughly 6-foot-tall, 20- to 30-year-old black man wearing black pants, a blue long-sleeved shirt, tennis shoes, gloves and a white "theater style" mask, according to the FBI. 610

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman who caught herself on fire in her kitchen and her husband were burned when he rushed in to help his wife inside their home in the Bay Terraces neighborhood Sunday, fire officials said.The stove fire inside a home on the 7500 block of Careybrook Lane ignited about 3 p.m. Sunday, fire officials said.The husband used whatever he could find in order to help his wife, San Diego Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Raines said."Eventually, there was water used from a bathroom," San Diego police Lt. Mike Ramsay told the station. "But due to whatever was used (by the husband) part of the flash, part of the fire, his clothing caught on fire."The husband and wife were taken to the UCSD hospital burn center. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Four men allegedly bringing several dozen pounds of drugs through the coastal North County were arrested today following a road chase from Solana Beach to Carlsbad, authorities said.The pursuit began about 10:30 a.m., when detectives tried to pull over a vehicle with five people in it on Interstate 5 near Lomas Santa Fe Drive, according to sheriff's officials.The driver refused to yield, continuing on to the north for about four miles before exiting onto Encinitas Boulevard, Sgt. Bill Kerr said.There, one of the passengers, 24-year-old Gabriel Albert Delosreyes, got out of the vehicle and allegedly made a futile attempt to escape on foot.As deputies chased down Delosreyes, the fleeing driver -- later identified as Juan Manuel Villalobos, 28 -- got back onto I-5 and went north for several more miles, then exited at La Costa Avenue and headed east along the southern shoreline of Batiquitos Lagoon, Kerr said.Reaching a residential area off Levante Street and Caminito Monarca, just east of El Camino Real, Villalobos pulled over, jumped out of the vehicle and ran off with his remaining companions.One of the four, an unidentified woman, managed to escape, but deputies quickly captured Villalobos along with cohorts Marcos Martinez, 34, and 26-year-old Eddie Anthony Navarro.Inside the trunk of the car Villalobos had been driving, deputies found a truck tire with 25 1/2 pounds of methamphetamine stashed inside it, according to Kerr."Small amounts of other drugs were also found on the suspects,'' the sergeant said.The arrestees were expected to face various criminal charges, including possession of an illicit narcotic for sale, illegal transportation of a controlled substance and conspiracy. 1736

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A young man who groped and sexually assaulted four female students as they walked to their off-campus housing near San Diego State University last summer was sentenced today to a two-year prison term.Judge Polly Shamoon also ordered Minda Shewangizaw, 20, to stay away from the four victims and San Diego State for 10 years.Shewangizaw pleaded guilty in April to felony and misdemeanor charges of false imprisonment and sexual battery. The defendant still faces charges that he tried to rape a woman in May 2017 at UC Riverside, where he was a student.Deputy District Attorney Judy Taschner said the victims in the SDSU case ranged from 17 to 19 years old. "He (Shewangizaw) attacked two separate groups of girls that were walking in pairs," the prosecutor said outside court."And even though they were walking with a friend, it didn't deter him from literally walking up to them and sexually assaulting them and grabbing them against their will."T.H. testified during a preliminary hearing in January that she and her roommate, T.L., were walking near Montezuma Road and 55th Street, back to their apartment just after midnight last Aug. 29 when the defendant came up from behind and forcefully "grabbed my butt."T.L. testified that she noticed someone walking behind them before he began chasing them. "I said, You need to leave," T.L. testified. "He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward him. He pulled my shirt down and grabbed my breast."T.L. said she kicked the defendant and was able to break free. She and her roommate notified a security guard, who called campus police.The witness said Shewangizaw was wearing an "extremely distinctive" blue Hawaiian shirt and she and her roommate were able to identify him a short time later, after his arrest following another attack.Jane Doe 2 testified that she and Jane Doe 1 were on a pedestrian bridge near the Aztec Student Union, headed back to their dorm about 1 a.m., when she heard footsteps and was smacked on her "behind" by the defendant."I was livid. I said, What are you doing? Don't do that! He laughed it off." The witness said she kept walking and tried to ignore the defendant, but he followed and made a remark about her breasts before pulling her shirt down and putting his hands on her chest.Jane Doe 2 said Shewangizaw went to Jane Doe 1 and said, "How about you? What do you have?" Jane Doe 1 testified that Shewangizaw asked them if they were freshman and told them he was a junior at SDSU. The witness said she froze when the defendant grabbed her friend's breasts."I got really freaked out." She said Shewangizaw grabbed her breasts and buttocks and trapped her against a rail before laughing and walking away. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - After hours of public input and deliberation, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved a .5 billion operating budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year.Previously .4 billion, the revised budget reflects an additional .2 million in recent funding requests, including million for rental assistance, millions of dollars in road projects and an office dedicated to racial equality.Tuesday's vote, held via teleconference, follows two public hearings earlier in August, when board members heard funding requests from residents.Normally held in late June, the budget approval process was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Supervisors thanked Chief Administrative Officer Helen-Robbins Meyer and her staff for crafting a budget during an especially challenging time.``Putting together a budget is a big job,'' said board Chairman Greg Cox.According to a summary provided by Robbins-Meyer's office, the county is spending .5 billion on health & human services, billion for public safety, 6 million on finance and general government, 2 million on land use and environment, 9 million on various items and 5 million on capital improvements.``I think we can be proud that we have a good, solid and well-balanced budget,'' Supervisor Dianne Jacob said.Supervisor Jim Desmond credited staff members for ``for fighting to do the right thing. She added that center will bring needed jobs, and ``become an economic engine for that community and this region.''
