New research may be hard for some dog owners to accept; the study found that dogs do not understand every word a human says to them.The researchers say dogs cannot hear subtle differences between words the way humans can. For example, the difference between “dog” and “dig” sounds different to human ears, but not so different to dog ears.The researchers came to their conclusion after measuring brain activity of family dogs by taping electrodes to the animals’ heads. They then played recordings of instruction words they knew, like “sit,” then similar-sounding nonsense words, like “sut,” and finally an unrelated nonsense word or sound, like “bep.”The dogs in the study, who were not trained ahead of the study, could quickly tell the difference between the instruction words and the unrelated nonsense words."The brain activity is different when they listen to the instructions, which they know, and to the very different nonsense words, which means that dogs recognize these words," lead study author and postdoctoral researcher at E?tv?s Loránd University in Budapest, Lilla Magyari told CNN.So, the good news is, yes, dogs are listening to human words and understanding some.However, brain activity showed a similar reaction in the dogs between the instruction word and the similar nonsense word.Dogs are renowned for their auditory capacity and ability to hear words and sounds, however the results show they may not be able to distinguish between subtle speech sound differences.Magyari says more research is needed to understand why this is."They may just not realize that all details, the speech sounds, are really important in human speech. If you think of a normal dog: That dog is able to learn only a few instructions in its life," she told CNN.The study was published this week in the Royal Society Open Science journal. 1845

Nitro is coming to a Starbucks near you.Every company-operated US Starbucks location will offer the nitrogen-infused cold brew coffee, which comes out of a tap, by the end of next year to meet customer demand, the company said on Thursday.The expansion is part of Starbucks' plan to sell more products next year — especially as Frappucino sales slip.Frappuccinos used to help drive sales for Starbucks. But in recent years, increasingly health-conscious customers have turned on the sugary blended beverages.Cold drinks like iced espresso, cold brew and Refresher juice drinks have driven more than 80% of Starbucks' beverage growth over the last two years, said Roz Brewer, chief operating officer for Starbucks, during the company's investor day presentation."As you know, our primary softness has been centered around Frappuccino," Brewer said on Thursday.Frappuccino drinkers tend to treat the drink as a one-off purchase, she noted. But customers are more loyal to cold brews and iced coffees. "These categories are more habitual and create more brand affinity," she said.The company is not moving away from Frappuccinos, Brewer noted. Starbucks is just offering new options for the blended drinks and expanding its cold drink portfolio.Starbucks started selling Nitro in its Roastery and Tasting Room in Seattle. The brew was such a hit that Starbucks expanded it to 500 Starbucks stores later that year.Right now, 2,500 out of 8,500 US company-operated stores serve Nitro cold brew. The expansion is "pretty substantial for us," Brewer told CNN Business.Nitro-serving taps will be added to all Starbucks stores, Brewer added. "That equipment is coming in around the country now."Brewer said she especially likes how Nitro looks when it's being poured into a glass. NEW YORK (AP) — Professional networking company LinkedIn is laying off nearly 1,000 employees, or approximately 6% of its global workforce, as a slowdown in hiring amid the coronavirus pandemic pressures its business. In a note to employees, CEO Ryan Roslansky said that the positions that will be eliminated are in its global sales and hiring offices. Roslansky said it's the only layoffs LinkedIn is planning. "To continue adapting and accelerating the company as we have been, we need to ensure we are focusing our efforts and resources against our most strategic priorities to set up the company for success today—and well into the future," Roslansky said in the letter. "When we took a hard look at the business, we decided we needed to make some hard calls."Roslansky said 960 roles across their Global Sales and Talent Acquisition organizations would be eliminated.Impacted U.S. employees will receive at least 10 weeks of severance pay and a year of continuing health coverage through COBRA. Nichole Jolly just confirmed what she feared: her childhood home, where three generations made memories, was now reduced to rubble.“This is where I came back when I was born,” she said through tears. “This is where my babies came back when they were born.”Jolly and her husband, Nick, had come to terms thinking the cat that lived with her mom probably didn’t make it. Jolly said her mom was given such little notice to evacuate, so she left with only the clothes on her back.But as if on cue, a head popped up from the rubble.“Oh my god, Nick!” Jolly cried out.  “That’s our cat! Oh my god.”After a few minutes, they coaxed her out of the rubble. Jolly whispered an apology to little Kit Kat, nestled in her arms. The cat was now much thinner than the last time they saw her and her paws were singed.“I can’t believe she made this! She is a strong kitty. We have a strong family,” Jolly said.“I had to walk through fire too,” she said in Kit Kat’s ear.Jolly did, in fact, walk through fire. In fact, she barely escaped.It was last Thursday when the rapidly-moving fire was spreading through the town of Paradise—now 90 percent destroyed--where Jolly works as a nurse. She helped evacuate the surgical unit patients, putting them in any cars they could find, as gently as possible.And for that, she’s been dubbed a hero. However, Jolly thinks that saving her own life soon after was the real miracle.Jolly was in her car trying to escape, when the inferno suddenly surrounded her and many others on the same road.“I don’t even know where I am, it’s on fire,” Jolly said in a video she took from her car. “And we’re stuck in the middle of it. These trees could come down at any moment.”Cars were lined up and going nowhere.“I thought I was gonna be able to get out this way, but I’m stuck here, too,” she can be heard saying through tears in that same video.“We were screaming and running into each other with our cars. They pushed me off the road.”On Tuesday evening, she returned to that very spot for the first time since she almost lost her life.“I was all by myself. I was totally alone, and I called Nick and I said, ‘Honey, there’s flames all around me, and I’m gonna die. There’s no way I can make it out of this.’”Her husband had even begun to think about how he would tell their children their mom wasn’t coming home.“She was hysterical,” her husband Nick said, recalling their phone call. “And I couldn’t do anything to help her.”He suggested she get out and run. So, she did. Her shoes began to melt, and her clothes caught fire.“And I just had my arms out and I’m running, and I touched a firetruck.”She got inside it, but traffic was still at a standstill. Even the firefighters thought their chances for survival were grim.“I was sitting in the fire truck right here and just thinking, ‘OK, this is going to be a really painful death.’”But a bulldozer suddenly appeared, pushing the melting vehicles off the road.They made it out. But she hasn’t stopped reliving it. “I’ll never forget my screaming in the car, when the fire was just coming up on the side of it, and I was yelling for my husband ‘Oh my God, oh my God.’ I’ll never forget that. That’s what I wake up to every night.”But she takes comfort in knowing they, unlike some, still have each other.And they have Kit Kat. Tuesday evening, they brought her to her mom while she was at work to surprise her.“We found your freaking cat, mom,” Nichole shouted.Stunned, her mother could hardly find words.“Oh my god, you guys. I can’t believe this…. I thought she was gone!”Still alive. But now with eight lives left to spare. 3610
