OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Decades after serving in World War II, a North County veteran is receiving one of the nation’s highest honors. Willie Pong enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943; he was only 17 but lied about his age. He served almost three years as a ship's cook.Pong's parents were born in China and moved to America to give their kids a better life, which they did. But as a boy, Pong faced discrimination. I'm a true American. I'm a true American all the way. Just because of my color, don't mean a thing, it's inside my heart," said Pong. Nurses at an assisted living facility in Glendale, Arizona are facing backlash for filming and making fun of elderly patients. The video ended up posted to the social media site 'Snapchat'. The incident occurred at the Glencroft Senior Living facility.  An administrator from Glencroft told Phoenix-based KNXV that the facility cannot discuss personnel issues, but did learn about the video Monday morning and is taking the situation seriously. The video shows an elderly woman using a walker as she advances toward the camera. She is obviously agitated, telling the workers she "almost fell" and is seen asking for her pills. Instead of helping the woman, the nurses continue filming as they watch the woman and mock her.The video came to light after a whistleblower saw it on social media and alerted KNXV, as well as Glencroft, and the Arizona state agency that licenses nurses.She is also a nurse and said she knows the woman who made the video from nursing school. "It just disgusted me that you would treat someone like this," said the whistleblower, who asked to remain anonymous. "This lady obviously has some dementia or something going on."The whistleblower also said she is worried about violations of the patient's rights under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.  KNXV has reached out to the Arizona State Board of Nursing but has yet to receive an answer on this topic.  1468

OCEAN BEACH (KGTV)- Big waves continue to pound the coast today. A High Surf Advisory is issued until Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Waves reached heights up to eight feet Thursday and along Ocean Beach Pier, some waves reached 10 feet. As we normally see during high surf, advanced surfers made their way to the beaches. In Ocean Beach, crews continued their work to repair the pier despite the high surf below. Waves up to 10 feet crashed into the pier. One Ocean Beach resident tells 10News, "you know we spend all this money to live here and this is one of our facilities, it's sad when its closed". Crews are still on track to reopen the pier by Memorial Day, according to the City of San Diego. 709

ORLANDO, Fla. – Friday, the nation remembers one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history.June 12 is the fourth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, Florida.On that day in 2016, Omar Mateen opened fire inside of the LGBT club, killing a total of 49 people. More than 50 others were injured.Police shot and killed Mateen during the events of that night.In honor of the shooting victims, Gov. Ron DeSantis has ordered all flags in the state to be flown at half-staff on Friday.The Orlando community also plans to hold a tribute and a remembrance ceremony virtually, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.During prior anniversaries, the community has gathered outside the club to remember the victims. Norwegian Cruise Lines announced they are extending their suspension of all cruises until at least March 2021, as coronavirus cases remain high in the US and around the world.In a statement released Wednesday, Norwegian said all trips departing between January 1 and February 28 as well as “select voyages in March 2021” will be suspended. The suspension also applies to Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises through March 31, 2021.“Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. … today announces an extension of its previously announced suspension of global cruise voyages as the Company continues to work through its return to service plan to meet the requirements of the Framework for Conditional Sailing Order issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” the statement reads.Norwegian now has the longest suspension of major cruise operators. Carnival and Royal Caribbean announced last month they would suspend voyages through January 2021. Some Carnival voyages are canceled through February.The CDC lifted a no-sail order at the end of October, however a few days later, the Cruise Lines International Association, which represents about 95 percent of cruise operators, issued a statement that they would voluntarily suspend voyages through the end of the year, at least.Then a few days before Thanksgiving, the CDC warned Americans about traveling on cruises and the potential for contracting COVID-19. This followed a positive COVID-19 case on a Bahamas-based cruise voyage in early November.When the CDC lifted their order they announced a tiered approach, which would include cruises with a select group of volunteers to test COVID-19 safety protocols before passengers would be allowed.
