SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Libraries across San Diego County adapted quickly during the coronavirus pandemic, offering digital options for people to continue reading, researching, and connecting with the community."It's hugely important," says Migell Acosta, the San Diego County Library System Director. "People need libraries for serious study and recreational reading and then their information needs.""We knew that our main services were going to be reference, picking up library material and connecting to our technology," adds Ady Huertas, the Supervising Librarian of Youth and Family Services for the City of San Diego. "Luckily, during this time, we've been able to maintain that service, and we're really happy that we're able to do that."Moving to digital services when the pandemic forced branches to close took some adjustments but ultimately proved successful.Libraries moved money in their budgets from buying physical books to buying ebooks so people could have more options to download. The County library system went from 2 million ebook downloads in 2019 to 3 million in 2020 and amassed the state's 2nd most extensive digital library.The City Library created a virtual hub on Facebook to connect with people through storytime, videos, and more. It quickly grew to more than 2,000 followers."We went from creating some basic programming daily to having multiple programs per day for all ages," says Huertas. "We have a schedule. We have storytimes, book clubs, book talks, crafts, stem, learning opportunities, and we even have mindfulness programs and other folks we collaborate to create the content."Both systems also gave out nearly 30,000 take-home summer reading kits to keep kids excited about literacy.The County sent magazines and paperback books to members of the homeless population living in shelters and hotels.Libraries also expanded their online learning options. The County's high school diploma program for people aged 19 and up graduated 25 people during the pandemic and currently has 100 more enrolled.They also offered access to Linda.com, an online learning library of "how-to" videos."I love YouTube like everybody else," says Acosta. "But these are classes that are more business skills, how to do a presentation, accounting skills, and then deep level computer skills."They've had several thousand hours' worths of videos already viewed on the service since they added the service.In the spring, libraries were able to add in-person pick up of books. Over the summer, they offered limited access for people to come into the branches.They also made it easier for people to become library customers by offering library cards with only a phone number or email address.To help address the equity gap, libraries also allowed people to check out computers and other devices. They also expanded wifi signals at the branches to have internet access for people sitting outside the library.Library officials say the new emphasis on digital has made them better libraries in the long run."Whenever there's a challenge to be met, and you step up to the challenge, personally or as an institution, you become better for from that experience," says Huertas. 3187

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local health care workers are seeing a massive number of at-risk patients through virtual visits amid concerns over COVID-19. “We've gone from having 100 visits a day [by phone or video] to 1,200 visits just yesterday alone, says Dr. Abi Olulade with San Diego's Sharp Rees-Stealy Group. She and hundreds of doctors with Sharp Healthcare are putting a special emphasis on telehealth appointments with patients who are considered at-risk because their immune systems can be weaker. RELATED: Coronavirus Impact: Concern over nurses' protective gear“[Patients] with lung disease, heart disease, diabetes and those that are immuno-compromised so we are focused on our higher risk patients,” she tells 10News.This week, 10News interviewed Dr. David Wetherhold at Scripps Health whose team is also trying to reach that same population through Scripps' telehealth program. It was supposed to roll out over the next 18 months, but with COVID-19, it's compressed into a few weeks. “The immuno-compromised, transplant patients, heart failure patients or cancer patients. [They’re] going to be our initial focus [with] trying to get them the care they need remotely without bringing them out into the community," Wetherhold said.RELATED: In-person EDD services temporarily closed“They are more at-risk of getting severe complications from coronavirus so we want to limit them coming into the office when we can,” adds Dr. Olulade. She wants to remind at-risk patients to stay in communication with their providers about any new symptoms, even if mild, that could warrant a need for further evaluation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's a new season with new threads for the San Diego Padres.The Padres unveiled new home and away sets of uniforms sporting the team's classic brown colors during a fashion show-style event at Petco Park Saturday.Third baseman Manny Machado, first baseman Eric Hosmer, and shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. were on hand to model the new look the Friars take into 2020. Two styles of the new uniforms featured a return to pinstripes, one on a white base reading "Padres" and the other on dark gray reading "San Diego." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local health officials said Thursday a new case of vaping-related lung injury has been reported, as county leaders prepare to consider new vaping regulations.So far in San Diego, there have been 43 confirmed cases of vaping-associated lung injury with three cases under investigation. There haven't been any local deaths, but all patients have had to be hospitalized. Those affected range in age from 17 to 70 years old, according to the county.The CDC has said that vitamin E acetate and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are closely linked with e-cigarette, or vaping, associated lung injury. CDC recommends people avoid using THC-containing e-cigarettes or vaping products.RELATED: San Diego woman hospitalized with vaping illness warns others“Vaping-related lung injuries continue to be reported in the region and that’s concerning,” said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer.As of Jan. 7, the CDC has reported 2,602 hospitalizations or deaths from sudden and severe lung injuries associated with vaping.The San Diego County Board of Supervisors is set to discuss several potential local actions on regulating e-cigarette devices during a Jan. 14 meeting. Those ordinances include a ban on flavored tobacco sale and distribution, device moratorium, and restricting e-cigarette smoking to outdoor areas at restaurant. The ordinances would apply to unincorporated parts of the county.“As stewards of public health; we have a responsibility to raise awareness and act in the best interest of the public to protect them,” said Supervisor Fletcher. “Right now we simply do not know enough about the chemicals being consumed and their impacts. We are acting in a similar fashion to other jurisdictions in California, we are acting with an abundance of caution.” A second meeting on the ordinances will be held on Jan. 28. If the ordinances pass, they will go into effect July 1. 1902
