Nancy Pelosi's bid to become speaker of the House is becoming more complicated, as 17 Democrats have now signed a letter saying they won't vote for her on the House floor, according to four sources with knowledge of the matter.If these Democrats stick to this pledge, the California Democrat, who is currently the leader of her party in the House, may not have the votes to become speaker. But Pelosi and her allies reject that notion and are confident of their chances, saying she will call their bluff on the floor.Pelosi first needs to win a majority of the House Democrats to win the caucus nomination on November 28. Then, she needs to win a majority of House members who vote for a candidate -- likely 218 -- and can't afford to lose too many Democrats on the floor.Democrats are poised to hold at least 227 seats in the new Congress compared to 200 for Republicans, with eight races still yet to be called by CNN.What's unclear is who will run against Pelosi on the Democratic side. Ohio Reps. Moderna is asking American regulators to allow emergency use of its COVID-19 vaccine. It says its final results show the vaccine is 94% effective.The drug maker says it had 196 COVID-19 cases so far in its study. It says 185 of those participants received the placebo, while 11 got the real vaccine. The 30 people who became seriously ill in the trial didn't get the vaccine.FDA advisors are expected to look at all the evidence on December 17. They'll be checking out Pfizer’s vaccine on December 10.Pfizer and Moderna's success with their COVID-19 trials could impact how vaccines are made in the future.It has to do with how they work. They use what's called messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. The virus' genetic code is injected into the body so it can instruct cells on what antibodies to produce.It hasn't been approved to be used in a commercial vaccine before.“In the future, it's clearly going to be tough to beat RNA vaccines for speed and that's a wonderful thing. Just this demonstration of how incredibly fast they can move has been great. How effective they can be, I think will depend on a particular disease,” said Shane Crotty, Ph.D. with the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.Crotty says the narrowest application for this vaccine technology in the future is a similar situation where there's a new emerging virus."The mRNA vaccine has been tried for other infectious diseases and they have been investigated for cancer. There's a whole area of trying to vaccine against cancer, which has kind of been an elusive target,” said Dr. Alessandro Sette with the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.A big question with an mRNA vaccine is how long its protection will last. (KGTV) -- An investigation is underway to find the driver in a hit-and-run crash that critically injured a skateboarder.National City police say the man was skateboarding with friends on Palm avenue around 12:30 a.m. when a vehicle traveling northbound hit him.The vehicle fled the scene, leaving the victim on the street when officers arrived. Paramedics rushed him to UC San Diego Medical Center with serious head injury, according to police.Witnesses tell police the driver was a woman. Mondelez International, the parent company of Nabisco, has redesigned its packaging of "Barnum's Animals" crackers after being pressured by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.The group called for the redesign by Mondelez because it protests the use of animals in circuses, and the animal crackers boxes showed animals in cages, the Associated Press reports.The crackers were once named for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus, but it folded for good after 146 years. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The man accused of killing four people and injuring others at a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee is not competent to stand trial, a judge ruled. Medical experts previously deemed Travis Reinking to be mentally unstable and unfit to stand trial. He appeared in court Wednesday where a judge ordered him to be placed in a mental health facility until he is competent to stand trial. He's expected to be moved this afternoon. Prosecutor Roger Moore said this hearing was to determine Reinking’s current state of mind – not his mental state during the shooting. Psychologist Rena Isen spoke with Reinking prior to the hearing and testified that he's not competent to stand trial, saying he's shown signs of schizophrenia.  782
